My poor old K100 RS was looking rather tired and worn in places. It was time to either get rid or repair and restore. I've always liked the look of the K100/2 so I ordered all of the necessary parts from my local BMW dealer over the course of the next 18 months.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that virtually every single part number was still available. Most had to go on 'back order' and came from the factory but they still reached me just a few days later. Now that's what I call efficient!

The Ohlins shock was bought on ebay from a really nice guy in Italy. The Remus exhaust and rearsets which are genuine BMW were obtained from ebay in England unused. When Bluebell BMW (my local dealer) stopped trading in bikes, I got the last of the parts I needed from Motorworks and Motobins.

I'm really pleased with the result and the streetfighter look. The riding position is very comfortable compared to my Triumph T595 Daytona.

Beautiful renovation.

I see that you polished your covers. I looks good.

Yes, all the parts are still availaible from the factory. The only problem is cost.
With a couple of my friends, we created a "cooperative", and we are buying used parts (mostly on E-bay).

The way that it works is as follow:
When we find a good deal on parts (last one was 2 weeks ago for a crashed k100rt for $550), we split the cost and buy it.
When one of us needs parts, he takes them from the stock and have some time to replace it with an equivalent. This way, you don't have to rush to the dealer and pay the high price of new parts in order to keep your bike on the road.

Many thanks for your kind comments Bert. Your co op for parts is a good idea as some parts are very costly.

I got my bike back on the road on Tuesday after a ground up rebuild. I took it to my local testing centre and after taxing it for the year I was hoping to go for a good ride to scrub the tires in. Unfortunately I picked a rotten day and it was cold, raining and slippery. Rolling Eyes

The photos were taken with my mobile phone camera so aren't very good quality. I'll get some better pics with my digital camera soon. But I'll have to clean it first as it's got a film of gray slime all over it. Oh, the joys of motorcycling in England!

I think the fuel mixture may be slightly out because the plugs look a little dark and there's some gentle popping from the Remus exhaust. I might have to ask my dealer to look at that as I'm not sure how to go about adjusting it without specialist equipment. The exhaust sounds great - not too noisy but a deep bass drone. Bit like a WWII bomber.

Chocks away! Very Happy

Col

Hi Barry,
Thanks for your comments. My K100 started off as an RS model but was looking battered. I'd been trying to source a K100/2 for quite a while but there aren't many around - mainly on the continent. After a few enquiries with the factory I decided to rebuild my own bike using K100/2 components as parts are surprisingly still available.

The radiator surround is one of the distinctive features of the K100/2 and I had to buy quite a few parts to make the change. Not the cheapest of options but by then I'd become zealous to the point of fanaticism!

I like the look of the bike and my local dealer did a great job on the paintwork. So far as I'm aware the K100/2 was only available in this colour which is called Marakesh.

You can see some detailed photos of Patrick Loomans '89 K100/2 along with lots of other great K75/100 bikes at:

Thx for the reply. I have a nice 100RT. Getting a little tired of it, due to the RT fairing. Trying to decide weather to sell it or redo it to something more to my liking. Barry

Hi Col. Looks really smart. I'm like Barry in that I sometimes think it would be nice to redo my LT without the fairing. Trouble is, I like to use it in the winter as long as its dry(ish) and like the protection when the temp is only a few degrees. Maybe I need to buy another K100 as a project!
Like the polished casings and as the black paint on mine needs redone I may give it a go.

Hi there in Northern Ireland!

I agree entirely that a fairing is a mighty fine thing to have, especially in the winter. I was offered a brand new BMW handlebar mounted screen for my rebuild for very little money and I think I should have got it.

It looked just like this one in Finland

Mind you, I expect they get a bit more windchill there than we do in Cheshire!
Ride safe.

Hi Colin,
Your bike looks great! Really nice to see what can be done.
My friend, Kevin, may not have been in touch. I am working on him! Sorry for the delay.
My bike is Marakesh red too and needs respraying. How did you get yours done? How much roughly?
All the best,
Neal

Hi Neal,
I haven't heard from Kevin but he can't contact me anymore on the mobile number I gave you cos I've lost my mobile! I'll give you a call and let you know my work mobile number.
The respray was done at Bluebell BMW in Crewe and cost £450. They did a quality job. While it was away being done a friend at church said "Hey, I was talking to a guy who does car resprays and he'll spray your panels for £200" - Doh!

My car broke down the other week and I had to have a lot of work done. After lots of thought as to whether it was worth it, I went ahead - cost £1,114. Today all the electrics failed and I had to get a tow to the garage. scratch

Hey Colin!

Love the look, especially the polishing on the engine, I've tried autosol, and a couple of soft cream polishers, did you have a great one that did it, or did you sand with fine grit and then polish with the buffing wheel and the paste? Is there a laquer or protective coating on it to slow the corrosion? Looks great, but I start to cringe doing the elbow grease thing on mine!
Cheers B

Hi Bruce,
I enjoyed reading "-10C and Skinned Knuckles" You've got a good novel started there! And I thought it was cold here - Ha!
I took the parts to a metal finishing shop and they polished them for me. Because they were done professionally it's easy to keep them bright with a little Solvol Autosol now and again. The same shop also re-chromed some rusty bits for me and made them like new.
Best wishes,
Col

What do you mean...Expensive? The membership is cheap before our dear government applies the GST.
GST is the equivalent of the VAT in Europe.
Please provide your tax # and we will send you a T7-a to deduct your membership from your taxable income.(Sorry guys, Canadian joke).

But, have you try to ride a lobster? ..... Not comfortable at all.
Here in Nova Scotia we have the BST for long time (BST means Bull Shit Tax for us and Blended sales tax for the government.)They changed the name to HST. H stands for harmonized. We feel soooo happy to be harmonized!
You should not complain and look how the Quebec riders got shafted (to be polite) be their government. The cost of registering a bike every year went up by 200%.
My brother paid $550 this year and it will go up to $700 next year (This is for an 1885 K100rt). Next year, crotch rockets (sports bikes) may cost over $2000 a year for a young rider. As a result, last month it was over 10,000 used bikes for sale in Quebec. Their is a lot of competition and some of the used bikes are going really cheap. I had few friends flying from NS to pickup bikes in Quebec.

Registration for ours is all about the same (roughly AUD $550) unless it is a 125 or less assuming they were built last century Very Happy (sorry Bert)

Did you use a 4V Remus Exhaust on the 2V engine? I'm asking since there is a change that I would do the same thing Smile

Hi there. I didn't know there was a Remus exhaust just for the 16v models but thinking about it I suppose there probably would be. Mine was brand new from a guy who was building a kit car with an 8v engine but then got fed up with the project and sold everything. I suppose he specified he had an 8v engine when he bought it. Anyway, it works great! Very Happy

Sometimes an older forum post needs to be resurrected just for the sake of history...and a coupla really good pictures that speak for themselves (you have to load the pictures yourself).

Have a squiz at those OEM rearsets and the general clean lines of the Mighty K without acres of plastic.
