Seem to be hearing about a few K's having dying fuel pumps at the moment. Mine went a few weeks ago after sitting for two months and then starting on the button. Drove for two miles from my daughters house and then it packed up. Removed it and wired it directly but it just gave a kick and seemed to be drawing a lot of current. Assuming its terminal.
Now the point of this post. Bought a brand new, sealed in the bag, in the box pump from e bay for £65 or about $100US. A bargain!
Was a bit suspicious before I got it as two other used pumps actually went for more just afterwards and was going to have a good sniff for petrol when I received it. But it was genuine. Slap self on back for deal well done! (For a change said wife)
Second point, and for everybody else's information, is that it is not a BMW part. It was manufactured in Italy by a company called TI Automotive.
Does anyone know if this is what you get if you buy a replacement pump from Motorworks or Moto-Bins?
Its identical to the original apart from a small embossed oval lump near the top of the pump body and the bottom plate is slightly different.
TI Automotive seem to be quite a big outfit based in the US and UK and I wondered if it could be an alternative source?

How's it compare to the original for fit? That'd be the go! There a bloke named John at Euromotoelectrics in the US selling a fuel pump that fits the K, but you have to use his modified rubber vibration mount to get it to work as intended. It's heaps less in price too. Nice score, Comber!

Casings are identical and fits sieve and damper no probs.
Should have said before. Box has ACRON TECH on it with part No.76808.
Also in the box is a black and a red wire about 16cm long with pump terminals on one end and a flat plug with spade like connectors.
That's what made me wonder if there is a car using it.

I've heard of blokes using a Holden Commodore fuel pump (GM) Down Under, which may be common to many General Motors vehicles world-wide. I'll see if I can get the details.

Hi TWB.
Do a search for Meat&Doria 76808 on Google.
Brings up a supplier and shows a photo of something that looks very much like a K pump.
Lists it as a replacement for a Bosch 0580464081 pump.
Says they are used in Fiat, Citroën, Peugeot and Lancia DIESELS!
Might be as expensive new but I'm sure there are plenty of Fiat diesels lying in breakers yards.
Be interested what you think. Maybe been barking up the wrong tree looking for petrol pumps.

Here is one person's take on the fuel pump options available, though it looks a bit shonky to me.

Seen that article before. Looks more bother than its worth. After doing a bit of research I think there are plenty of alternatives such as the Toyota Corolla pump article.
Only thing I'm worried about is that there are two versions of the pump that I bought. One gives 3 bar pressure and the other only 1.5 bar.
Fingers crossed that mine is the 3 bar version. I think the e bay seller genuinely believed he was selling one suitable for a K100.
I'll find out in a few days when I get a few new shims and get her restarted.
What are the symptoms if the pressure is too low?

I only know that the recommended approximate pressure is 2.5 bar. I suspect there would be poor response when you whack it open and the engine requires more fuel but not enough pressure's there to deliver it. Perhaps someone with some expertise in this area could elaborate for us?

Looking at Euromotelectric's website he seems to offer cheaper fuel pump kits for most BMW models except the earlier K's. For those he offers only the OEM Bosch pump and bits 'n' pieces, but at a more reasonable price than most dealers and other genuine spare part sources. I have dealt with him in the past and unless I could source something equivalent for less I'd probably buy from him again.

Here's the link to what he offers for K bikes:

Useful site. See they offer a petrol proof, foam sleeve that allows you to use the cheaper K1100 pump in the original rubber damper.

Yes, it looks like the pieces might all add up to allow fitment to the K100 8V but I'm not so sure. I reckon an email to John @ Euromoto might clarify it.

I used to buy from him when I managed the parts department of a large BMW workshop in North America. He sells an upgraded charging system for the terminally weak Airhead systems. It's an alternative to Rick @ motorradelektrik's original upgrade charging system offering. John also offers the higher output alternator upgrade bits for our K bikes.

hi comber ,

got my fingers crossed for you

the overall reference requirment of the pump are litres per hour at rated presure
and most pumps have a fair bit of margin in both those areas .
an easy guide is....what did the old pump come off what did it power ?

personally i steered clear of the diesel type pumps their general overall presure requirements seemed way higher than what we need, i guess its got to do with a lot of them being turbocharged and a higher manifold presure is constant .

Okay. Update on my bargain fuel pump.
Looks like I've bought a pup!
It looks almost identical but I think it must be the lower pressure pump.
The bike started, but not as promptly as before. Hot or cold. Performance seems OK. Have had it up to 100mph without any problem but noticed the tick over was lumpy and driving through traffic is difficult due to surging.
The pump is also quite noisy when driving and can be heard clearly.
At first I thought it was a plug or HT lead problem but after a bit of research I discovered that these are the typical symptoms of fuel pressure problems.
I know that people have suggested different types of pumps but it doesn't seem to be as straight forward as it appears.
Too little pressure causes the problems I have experienced and too much can cause over rich mixture. Can also bugger up CO2 levels if your bike is tested annually like ours in the UK.
Still have the old pump so going to have a go at stripping it with the help of Bert's excellent tutorial. If that doesn't work its back to flea bay.
At least the bike is usable in the meantime.

hope you changed the fuel filter too john .....what am i saying of corse you did ....but just incase it picked up some gunk out of the pump might be worth while flushing it ....just a thought .

after many more miles of travelling and many more miles of listening to that rattly old non return valve in the tank ..i can report that the beast is perfectly mannered as far as fuel is concerned .....

well your back on the road john ......good luck mate

Yup. New filter fitted. Old one was showing signs of clogging up after only a year. Blew through it.
