The Hubble space telescope is an amazing piece of technology. The narrative is not quite correct, the first time this was done it was at the behest of the telescope director who was allowed a small amount of personal time every month to look at anything he wanted to. He decided to look at an area that nobody would bother to look at, a spot in space devoid of stars, a spot no larger to the eye than a grain of sand held at arms length.
