I posted my first ever ride report on this forum February 2011. I promised I would follow
it up with another one and well you know how it goes… 2011… change of job,
adding a few rooms to the house, yadda, yadda…so a very delayed ride report of
the BMWMCC of South Australia bi annual rally.

The main
reason for posting at this late stage is the interest that many of us have in
sidecars / outfits. It’s always good to read Sidecar Paul’s and Saxon’s posts
here. The Aussie sidecar scene seems to have less of the go fast and
technically advanced euro approach and more of the middle of the road and mad max
meets the bush mechanic approach. I knew
that a couple of those almost mythical machines would probably be at the rally
and I wanted to meet them in the flesh……

Besides, I
hadn’t been to a bike rally since 1982…it was time to do another!

Long Time Between Rallies 110

I was heading
back out in the same direction as my last ride for just the one night…. approx
900ks round trip So on a mid spring morning I was off to South Australia…. just.

A break at Skipton

Back into Western
Victorian grazing country and the temperature is getting into the high 20’sC.
It seemed like the September sun had woken up the snakes as I quickly began to
realize that lots of the sticks laying on the road that I was wizzing past were
arching up to have a go. More respect and a bit more road weaving was required.

My Uncle had
a sheep property not far from here and we used to come to the caves for a
picnic and explore in the 1960’s when visiting the family. Times have moved on
and it’s now a World Heritage site. Looks pretty quiet up top. Most of the
action is down below.

Saw a lovely
75/6 with mikunis, sounded great. Also a sprinkling of modern bikes.

The Rally
organizers had the bbq roasting and the spit turning. The dining room was
bursting at the seams. Great fun and got to meet people I had only seen in
forum photos.

Lots of
arguments about the longest distance award, and any fleeting thought about
picking up the oldest combined rider / machine award was soon obliterated by an
80 something year old rider on a 75/5 bike. The bitter / sweet was in his
acceptance speech he announced his retirement from motorcycling … the now quiet
room burst into spontaneous applause.

So drinks were
drunk and tall stories told. Discussion of drug usage seemed to revolve around
antihypertensive and cholesterol meds. Retired to the sleeping bag after a
great night…

Breakfast and
head for home.

Nice! Your bike looks in good nick. Some VERY interesting outfits there. Wonder why the remote radiator? Out of the way of the leading link maybe?

Very subtle, DY. Ambient, picturesque, engaging, and well told. Where you been hiding? Give us more.

That cooling pan attached to the final drive in one of the first chair pics is an Airhead oil pan upside down! Ideas, ideas. Tres cool.

Thanks Dee Why, all good stuff.

BTW, I like your 'blue' themed camping gear.......I've just bought blue guy ropes and pegs to go with my 'blue' theme (I even have blue washing up liquid!)

Excellent report Dee Why. Great story and great photos.

I like the idea of the chook cookers over the cylinders of the airheads! Not only chooks, you could do a roast perhaps and a nice pie for dessert!

it is true Deewhy, Oz seems to take on an almost Mad Max genre when putting together an outfit.
first hand observation of " Beetles" K100 rig at the Karuah rally recently proved this .
Long Time Between Rallies Pic_0226

one can only surmise that due to their remoteness and road conditions , that such an outfit is deemed necessary.
these guys depict one of the true images of our broad uninhabited land. glad to hear you enjoyed such a trip.

maybe a group ride to south Oz sometime to bring the forum message to our fellow K bretheren... and to sample some of their southern hospitality.
of course an outfit would be needed to represent the forum, one with character to appease the SAK's.

Since 1980(?) there's a ride on the second weekend in August every second year called the "Off Centre Run".  The location varies each year, must have fuel, food, beer and a minimum of 200kms of dirt to get there, trailering a bike is not in the spirit of the event.  Its on this year at Drysdale River in WA, the 2016 event location will be decided by the attendees at Drysdale River.

If you wish to see many of these feral offroad touring K outfits, it's the place to be.  Those outfits have all been built to travel, strength more important than looks.  Chris McCardigan, the owner of one of these beasts(and one of the 1980 organisers) told me that my outfit was "too pretty to be a sidecar" Smile

Anyone's welcome, no invites required, no secret handshakes, just turn up.  What bike is not important, road bikes started this event and still quite a few go.

Sadly I've been only once 1992 at Stonehenge.

Al

Al, I went to Mt. Dare which was 1994 I think. A lot of hard yakka for a couple of beers. I did not get there before nightfall and slept by a telephone box by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Woken up by a carload of drunken black fellahs in a Kingswood whom I last passed when they were broken down.

One of my more memorable weekends away was in an XS 1.1 outfit from Brisbane to the Sapphire Rally in Warialda. Cold, wet and I spent a lot of the time hanging out of the chair doing donuts out the front of the pub.

No names, to protect the innocent but there will be photos out there somewhere.

Yep, i couldn't get the leave for Mt Dare in '94.

Marie and a friend Alanna took the sidecar(#1) out by themselves instead.  They made it out and back OK (bad corrugations apparently), the sidecar made it back with lots of botched welding repairs to fairing mounts etc. but that was what it was bought for.

In a fit of 'absynthe makes the fart go honda', I asked Marie to marry me not long after she got home.  Long Time Between Rallies 652573
