Hi All,
I wonder if someone can point me in the right direction.
I don't see any clips or bolts so I guess its a case of lift firmly.
I did see it done a while ago but cant remember exactly what the man said
as I was on a steep learning curve.
I think just lift and slide back slightly, as I want to check something up front.

If you need to disconnect the fuel lines, remove fuse #6 (fuel pump) run the bike untill it stops.........then it`s no pressure in the lines when disconnecting.......

I just need to lift it to get a cable out of the way.
Previous owner had an Autocom fitted.
I don't need it at the moment so am removing.

I am not sure how far you can pull it back without disconnecting the fuel lines. I put longer fuel lines in to allow that to happen, just keep an eye on them. My original ones were a bit perished so I just put in the longer ones then. I also relocated the fuel tank earth.

Be careful removing the wires, you may disturb connections then end up taking off the tank to find which one is gone wrong. How do I know? My advice, take tank off.

Mine is a little different as its K100LT. And I have no clips.

Yep all ok.
No problem except the rubber grommit on the left side rear locating pin was a devil to get off.
In the end I realised the wire was caught in the side panel bracket rather than under the tank.
However I seem to have lost the one remaining tank retaining clip, so its on the list for a new pair.

No need to go overboard there Rod. You could probably count on one finger the number of folks who have those clips.
Actually probably 3 fingers. You, Alex and his police bike and Halo when he gets to putting the tank on.
I did not even know there were clips till I read it here. Only took me 19 years to find out.

Count halo out, rossco, he has an '84 so it will be a proper tank mounting. (Before they cheapened them )

I joined both clips together with a length of electrical cable. Pull the cable, both clips pop off and you dont loose em. John.

found the one I lost yesterday...sitting don on the gearbox casing.

took her out for a spin into Maynooth earlier , went grand 'till i just got to the outskirts then something went pop and I lost a bit of power....felt like one of the plug caps came off and she was running real rough....power came back after a few moments so I took her home .
Was all right all the way....

Hi Inge et al,

I want to lift tank out to get at the fan connector. Have taken off lower fairing, radio, fuel gauge and temperature gauge. Wont start ! is this because the gauge is disconnected or ?

I only want to start it to de-pressurise the fuel line, if I don't am I likely to have gallons of petrol spraying about the place ?
I will empty the tank before I do it anyway.

I did lift the rear last time but this time I would like to take the tank out completely. From the diagram it looks like I will have to disconnect fuel line 2 and 3  and the two plugs 4.
I would imagine the tank has not been off since before 2004 so is it likely to be a little sticky on the front lugs ?

Any advice appreciated

You can lift the tank back then up a good way, much futher than the K100 as the fuel lines go from the inlet and outlet back to the rear of the fuel rail.
If you want it right of then open the cap to depressurize the tank and remove the fuel lines ,put a short piece of fuel line between the two tubes , disconnect the pumps electrical connector and the tank will come back and up and off.
With a K1100 you dont need to remove any fairing parts just be careful not to scratch the tank on the glovebox mounts.

If you leave the bike overnight without turning on the ignition [which pressurises the fuel system] it loses the pressure anyway. I used to do that rather than run it dry. All you will then lose is whatever fuel is in the fuel pipes. the tank doesn't drain all over the place.

Put protective stuff down each side of the tank so you don't scratch it. Otherwise remove one side box and inner fairing to give you room.

This was a K100LT but I think all is similar.

that worked fine, and no need to disconnect anything.
As you say Rick G, it lifts up and back a good way so no need to disconnect any lines.
now to try identify the fan connector....quite a lot of wires down there.
I think the cable colours are (Clymer) Brown/ Violet_Yellow.
I'm going in....wish me luck

I started to take my tank off this evening in order to see if I can relocate the throttle cable as the revs rise on full lock, and guess what?  Yes, my 1991 K100LT had both tank clips (and they were held together by a length of wire).  I think it shows that someone loved and cared for my bike before I bought her.

Nice one and very careful previous owner.
I still have one and hope to have two one day soon.
We worry about such small things ;-)
