I have decided to do a 2000 mile tour this summer so I am starting to prepare the bike for it's first long distance tour (mine as well). I need to fit a power outlet to run a Satnav and charge my phone as well, what do I need to do. Do I wire a direct feed to a cigarette outlet (fused accordingly ) or is there an accessory outlet in the fuse board to use?

I think this will be the first of many questions over the next few months as I prepare for the journey.

Thanks

Ali

Hi Ali,

In the relay box just under the tank there is an auxiliary wiring socket which is white which is used to plug the OEM additional harness in if I recall correctly... you could take a feed off of that. Have you got the Aux power which is located on the left hand side of the bike connected to the top cover over the ignition coils?
That could be another option to take a feed off of that If both of the devices are USB fed you can get a Cigarette lighter to double USB power convertors similar to this I have never used one myself mind...

I did exactly what is mentioned above...although I installed a waterproof cig lighter attachment to which I added a dual USB with a water cover thingy.....works a treat.

These folk are the industry standard for motorsport-sized powered sockets, extension leads and plugs. They offer a myriad of different ways to power your farkles like GPS, MP3, radar detector, mobile phone & etc. They replicate and add to BMW's longtime 'Hella" socket which should or might be just on top of your ignition coils. IMO this is the cleanest way to go without the size of a cigarette lighter socket. I've converted all of my motorbike-used accessories to this type of fused, weather-protected plug and socket. They're great as a portal for charging your battery too.

I recall when I bought a couple of plugs from the local dealer there were two options the cheaper one was made by Hella and came in a Hella packet and the other was a genuine BMW spare but more expensive. I wanted two so I bought one of each, I wish now I had not bought the Hella the quality of construction and the cable strain relief was nowhere near as good as on the BMW one. You gets what you pays for I suppose.

I have looked at my bike today and there is nothing fitted on the coil cover (see picture) Moto-bins and motorworks have the aux kit probably just get that.

Having looked on the American ebay site some of these look like they would be suitable to mount up in the dashboard area

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/12vtechnology/Sockets-with-Mounts-/_i.html?_fsub=2636558010

I may order one of them and let you know how it goes.

Ali, I've just seen this on e-bay.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K-100-RS-1989-RIGHT-FAIRING-INFILL-/140891875038?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item20cdcf66de

An infill panel to which someone has fitted a BMW type socket, looks neat.

Paul.
