They...surpassed all expectations in the car's maiden voyage by reaching 407km/h (253 mph). That was 80.46km/h faster than the previous record. His son, Ben, said: "On all of the runs the car was at full throttle for less then (sic, than) 10 seconds. To get out there and already be half way to our goal is incredible."

On 17th July 1964 Donald Campbell set the land speed record at 403.1 MPH on Lake Eyre Australia so I dont know what this guy is on about but he has a way to go yet. And yes Campbell's Bluebird car was wheel driven.

Yeah, 253 mph didn't see so crash hot to me either, because bikes get to that relatively tame speed at Bonneville each Summer with regularity. Let's see how he goes in the future. You know, it could be the newspaper article writer misquoting numbers too. There seems to be a lack of editorial guidance these days, especially with online news and the proliferation of instant stories. The typos and outright mistakes are atrocious, standards be damned, apparently. Just like schools and gubmints...

Yeah thats quite true the Courier Mail never was much chop at the truth. I wouldn't think that someone who has spent 1.5 mil would not check it out first. Though 800kph is a huge ask for wheel driven but best of luck to him.
