On the RT the cowling (screen) closely contours the cockpit, as a result there is limited room to mount a GPS without interfering with existing switches or gauges.

As conceived, the GPS occupies unused mirror mounting hole on left hand control. The positioning puts the GPS up into a field of view just like a mirror, allowing the rider to simply glance across to see the map without having to move your head.

(above) A ram mount is designed to work off of the 9mm hole on the RT. Here we're using a 4.3" TomTom, one of the smallest units available. Since the GPS is in "bug-splat" territory, a cloth cover is used whenever the unit is not in use.

UPDATE 3/13/14: This year I have switched to the low handlebar option. Now with the handlebars a mere 3.5" above the rim of the faring the GPS unit fits easily within the canopy, so it no longer resides out in bug-splat territory.

(above) Installation is a snap.

a. RAM mount bolts to unused hole on left hand control cluster.
b. The mounting tab for the ball socket extends outwards and can be rotated around for ideal positioning.

UPDATE 3/13/14: One problem with the way the mount is is pictured here is that it can interfere with clutch lever operation. Now using the low handlebar option for RT the RAM mount can be swiveled over to the right and won't interfere with clutch operation or impact the windscreen.

Routing the charging cable is a bit different as we've chosen to use the socket positioned atop the coil cover. Here the OEM plug has been replaced with a cigar lighter. This position is also a handy charging station for a phone or iPod since the device can be safely stowed or locked-up under the seat. There's also room atop the coil cover for a second cigar lighter if desired.

(above) 1. The charging cable is tie-wrapped to the handlebar, then drops down alongside the tank. 2. It runs for a short time under the rubber molding before emerging around the back of the tank to be tie-wrapped to existing wire bundle. 3. The wiring actually runs past the coil cover and behind the battery cover because when the connector is not in use it is stowed inside the tool tray. 4. When the GPS is in use the connector comes back out ahead of the seat (so not to pinch the cord) and plugs directly into the cigar lighter.
