I have been adding pics of my build here and there so I decided to do a build thread and consolidate all my crap in one place. The Toecutter build Dsc_0813
The Toecutter build Dsc_0910
The Toecutter build Dsc_0911

As I fix and update more bits I will add more pics. The biggest hold up has been the shipping of parts. The pic of the back wheel is to show the approximate colour scheme of the wheels and the polishing. I bounced ideas around and came up with that, I like it, it kind of reminds me a little of an XS750 wheel. I am now waiting for the 50mm sanding disks to arrive to finish the spokes where they meet the rim.

I have also got all the lights to work and am now waiting for some electrical plugs to arrive. The gearbox rubber (under the clutch arm) has arrived but I got side tracked polishing the wheel when I removed it. So thats a job for another day.

I have swapped my Police single seat for a Corbin from Woodie in Canada and am still waiting for it to arrive. I have had Corbin seats before and my last one was like sitting on a brick ( house brick that is) but I have a couple of good sheep skins. It will be black .... As any good bike should be Very Happy and my po;ishing nerve is twitchy just looking at that alloy motor roundel . I will get it on the road this year and do a quick trip to Townsville in January but then she will come off the road for a few weeks for the paint job and probably a rear main seal/clutch ( if needed) and engine polish .

I have been looking at Ventura racks today and what a bloody ripoff. Around $500au for their flimsy looking garbage bag and rack (I know that they are good quality but I prefer the look of the old style Gearsack on a K bike) And I would have to ditch my city panniers to fit it. It looks like I will be fabbing up a rack to suit a back rest/top box, so my long suffering pillion in a million can have a nap as we ride.

I also tried to pull the ignition switch a[art to give it a clean. Oh well. I guess I'll never see that ball bearing again. No matter, $15 from fleabay for an aftermarket job...........Now just waiting for it to arrive

Oh and BTW, I decided to name the bike "The Toecutter". I'm sure the Mad Max fans will get the reference

Marc,  can't comment on the current prices for the Ventura bags and racks as I bought mine in 1997 and can't remember what I paid. It has been on my K1100 all those years and apart from having faded to a muddy brown colour it is still doing great service. In that time the bike has done over 130,000km and the bag is almost always on there. I also have the standard Z brackets for the panniers and have both city panniers and type 3 panniers and use both sets with the bag on. If your pillion tends to lean back when snoozing then you're right - the bag rack is not designed for taking that load. My pillion liked to snooze morning and afternoon but she leaned forward (onto me) so it was not an issue. Here's a couple of photos of the bag rack on my bike and I'm confident the K1100 is the same as the K100 in that regard.
The Toecutter build Img_1113The Toecutter build Img_1115

I also fabricated an alternative rack for when I had lots to carry - I made the loop higher and had additional supporting legs and I would put the tent roll on the rack and then the Ventura bag on top of it.
The Toecutter build Rack10

Just food for thought.

I tend to agree that the cubic style of the Gearsack bags probably pack better. There is a member on here that was wanting to sell one if you are interested.

Cheers

Thanks for the heads up Gaz, I know that the Ventura gear is good qualilty, I had one on a Triumph Datona 955 for a few years. I dont like the price or the shape for the K. The web site for the Aussie importer (Kenmar agencies) say that the standard BMW panniers will not fit with the rack, but you have proved them wrong. I am going to build myself a rack after taking measurements this arvo and mucking around with some scrap steel that I have laying around. If I do happen to come across an old Gearsack rack I will probably grab it but my funds are dwindling for bike stuff ATM, so I will just have to see what happens

The K1100 is about 40mm wider. the frame is the same but the mounts that are welded onto the frame are 20mm wider each side to compensate for the right rear mount needing to be further out to clear the paralever pivot.

Link? That's an odd connection setup inside the BMW ignition switch and if anyone is producing a replacement, we'd all be very interested.

Connect the green and red wires to the ignition switch 'on' position. Connect the slate and slate/blue wires to each other. You'll get the sidelights with ignition on, but there won't be a sidelights-on position. Not a problem in the UK since 1993, but I've no idea about Oz.

Actually, measure the hole that the ball bearing escapped from (IIRC it's 2mm). ebay's your friend, although you'll probably have to buy at least ten of them.

Just a bit more "suck it and see" paint scheming. The Toecutter build Dsc_0912

That's a great idea Charlie but the dirt here is magnetic. I have been meaning to take a pic of a dirt clad magnet after it has been on the shed floor. A lot of people wont believe that our dirt sticks to magnets. We get a lot of lightening strikes too. I don't know if the two are connected but my neighbor believes so.

Hmmm. the ignition just turned up. The third position is momentary for starting a car lol. I will have a go at setting the bike up so that it starts off the key and the parkers will stay on the headlight switch. I'm pretty sure that the park lights aren't required by law to be on the switch in Queensland. The rule for most things here seems to be " if its fitted it must work" . On that rationale, if it aint fitted, it dont hafta work.

yep that will do ...although the wiring for the start function on k bikes is a little different
doesn't mean that you cant install a small relay  that doubles up on the start function somewhere neat and tidy

good luck

Honestly - just treat it as an on-off switch. Don't mess with the starter circuit if you don't need to. I did note that the third position is a start position, so my advice re. the wiring still stands.

I think you would be far better off to have the start button on your right thumb. Holding the clutch in and front brake on then needing to restart could be difficult.

In that situation Rick I would probably just use the rear brake but I am thinking that I am just making more work for myself by frigging around with things that don't need my input. The reality is that I need to spend my time a little more usefully (is that even a word???). I want to mount my fairing, spotlights, fix my GPI and neutral light, replace the clutch boot and to cap it all off we have relatives visiting for the next 3 weeks The Toecutter build 259495.

Its better to fit them yourself though because they get so busy that you end up spending half the day waiting around to get tyres fitted.

I cant assess the suspension proprly untill I get it on the road but I hae cgecked the spring sag and changed the oil so it's a start. I may well end up doing what you have done Charlie, I do like a firm front end though.

Thanks to Robmack for the starter motor cleaning "how to" and to the rest of the guys that added advice on that thread. But my left indicators still only work when I hit the blinker relay with a ratchet. I have cleaned the contacts in the switch and on the relay. Any ideas?

There is likely a cold or a cracked solder joint inside the flasher unit.  When you hit the relay, the shock temporarily makes the connection.  I would open the flasher unit and inspect it under a magnifying glass and good lighting to look for any suspicious PCB connections. Re-heat any that look like they may be cracked or cold.  You do know how to solder?

I found the problem last night by squeezing along the indicator wires with pointy nose pliers. One of the wires had broken inside its sheath. All fixed no and flashing merrily  The Toecutter build 212902 The Toecutter build 212902 The Toecutter build 212902

Not real happy with the angle and height of the rack but it is something I will revisit later. My wife feels a lot more comfortable with a back rest. I rang Aust post yesterday to find out when my seat will arrive. Marc, glad to hear that bloody seat finally made it out to the ranch - unbelievable that it could have taken that long to get there.  Good to see it fitted up and that you'll soon be tearing up the roads in style and a small amount of comfort.
