I am starting the build, and going to take a long time to complete it, around 6-9 months.  The main reason is time to work on the bike, but also, this is my first build ever on a motorcycle.  I am excited to get started and doing a lot of research and viewing a lot of different looks to see what I like.  I am sure all of this will evolve as I work on her.  

So, with all projects, there has to be a "nickname" right?  Well, she is blue from the factory and I like blue, so we will call her...BlueJ.  BlueJ is a 1985 K100 RT in mint condition, well mint as in 33 years old and has sat outside for the past 2 years if not more.  She has a bit over 33k miles on the clock.  I have some photos I took today of and I will try to keep up with more as I go.  My plan right now is to do the following:

1.  Strip the bike 100%
2.  Powder coat the frame and maybe the wheels
3.  Clean the engine and replace anything that seems to be broken and overall maintenance without opening the motor
4.  Paint the tank and any other parts needed
5.  Customize with new gages, lights, and other sh!t that is needed
6.  Reassemble
7.  Ride of into the sunset

Thanks Laitch! The fiberglass panels came off really easy, just pull! Well, I did not try to salvage them as they where not any good as is. I can tell the bike was not really all that cares for and has some wanna be body work done before.

Issues so far, cannot open the gas tank. The key did not work and my buddy tried to pick the lock, but that did not work either. I may have to get more creative with it, but that’s ok!

Don't lose or damage that trunk - AFAIK it's a USA-only aftermarket part.

I seen this with a search I did and was going to try it next time I am working on the bike.  Thank you for the info also!!

Odds are you will be looking for fuel pump, mounting, fuel filter and all the fuel lines.

Odds are you will also be looking for all the brake rebuild/seal kits.

You will be doing spline lubes but I would look at new rear main crankshaft seal while you are in there plus all the boots, clutch pushrod and the driveshaft/swingarm boot. Probably wise to pull the sprag clutch too while you are there.

It might be creative to remove both the fuel injection control unit and the ignition control unit then put them in a room of your home to dry out while you are cleaning what is like to be a very fun project.

Probably should consider taking apart all the switches and cleaning them too.

Maybe cleaning all the relays and their receptacles and the fuse receptacles might be worthwhile too, while waiting for paint to dry.

Review charlie99's work that he has documented on the site. That's really how you want to do it.

If you leave reassembly to memory, the project might become so fun you'll never be able to finish it. Heed charlie's advice here.

Thanks for the advice especially on cleaning, lubing, and inspecting.  As for keeping things to memory, a lot of photos will keep that from happening!

So, I was able to do some work on the bike today, still in disassembly mode.  Got the tank off, and I would not put that gas in my lawn mower.

Next, I moved onto removing the front X-brace.  However, I need to label the wires before I remove them off the bulbs.  Finally, I got the speedo off, but I need to take the clutch cable off before I can get a bracket off.  All in all, productive!  

I think next I will get the battery out, trying to figure out how to remove, what appears to be, the ECU.  So time to do some searching.

And...the photos!!

Just a quick update, I figured out that silver tab and batter is out!  So, that is it for the night and the eco is put up somewhere safe!

Hello everyone and happy Sunday! I just finished “tinkering” on the bike tonight. I will have to take and post pictures tomorrow. I was able to get the frame loose and just need to remove the the choke and throttle cables.

The front fork came off easy and so did most everything else. I expect to slow down on the build as the rest will start to cost money and wait for shipment.

Oh, and the fuel in the tank was horrible! I went to burn it and it had to be the slowest burn ever! Well, more to come later.

So, it has been a couple of days and the bike is actually moving along a lot faster than I could have imaged.  I have gotten everything apart to where I need it.  I threw all the old fiberglass parts away and started to clean the motor (it was horrible and lots of dirt and I found some bugs too..ewww!!) and strip the paint off the tank.  

Next, maintenance and more maintenance!  I am going to heed to what Olaf suggested and get parts to do the following:

Lube the spine (going to search for the best way to do this)
Replace the rear main crankshaft seal (need to drain the oil first...then read up more on how to get to it as well as the part number)
Replace the boots - need to find the parts
Clutch pushrod - Find the parts, but @92KK 84WW Olaf, do you mean replace what part??
Look into the driveshaft/swing arm boot and find the parts
Oh and the clutch too, low miles, but it has sat for a long time and rather do it now than have to take it all apart in a month or two

Finally, going to drain the oil, may actually do this first.  However, I am going to drain it over a magnetic pan to see how bad the internals are and know if I should be worried about anything else before replacing the other parts

By the time I get all of this stuff done, I will feel a lot better about the road worthy of the bike.

Weekend update. Bike is apart to where I want it. I have. Even cleaning up a lot of the parts as there is a lot of thick grease from not being cleaning before. Also, I think I removed half the weight in just dirt and decaying bugs. The bike was sitting outside for at least two years! I ordered a lot of parts I needed to replace and my next steps will be to just replace the parts and continue to clean and degrease.

Happy Easter everyone. Next week will be minimal movement of any.

So, today is the day I took the full step forward to modify the frame.  Clutch items are on order and I think that will finish the crazy mechanical parts.  I now, need to finish a lot and get her on the road...so, where we go!

So...It has been some time since I updated the progress.  Here is where we are:

- Seat/Tank painted
- Frame is currently being powder coated matte black
- valve cover and crank cover is currently being powder coated a smoke gray
- gearbox and engine matted with new clutch and rear seal
- received a lot of parts

Nice colour and someone has got a really good finish on it but...I can see a possible future problem there. The tank was not masked off, so there's a lot of overspray inside it. Gas will probably dissolve/dislodge that lot, so make sure you have a spare fuel filter to hand. You may not need it, but better safe than sorry. For the same reason, I'd fit a new gasket under the flap rather than hope the old one will take up the new irregularities.

Dai - Thank you and you are right about the overspray.  

I seen tank and seat on Friday, and should have it sometimes this week.  I told the guy, "take your time, no rush."  However, I did not know that would mean 2 months later lol.  That is ok, and looking forward to crossing another area off the list of what needs to be done.  I will get some pics posted once I get the parts back and should be moving forward.  My goal of having everything back together and on the road is the end of August, mainly because of spending much needed family time over the summer.

Does anyone have any recommendations for speedos?  I found one(Black Acewell 2853 Digital Speedometer & Tachometer), but seeing what others think.  I like the all in one multi gauge electronics style.

I used that exact speedo a couple of months ago on a Yamaha bobber project.  It’s well made. Just don’t expect any real product support from the manufacturer or DCC. it wired up pretty painlessly.

I know it has been sometime since I have posted any updates.  With my daughter here for the summer, I have taken a break.  However, I have determined I will order everything needed and have it ready for reassemble and rebuild.  If I can just find some parts I misplaced lol.  I should (stress on the should) have the tank/seat back soon.  

I do need some help, where to get the radiator hoses from.  I cut the hose that went through the crank cover when I sent it off to be powder coated.  I would like to replace all of them, but not sure if that is possible.  

I have been working on replacing all the fuel lines, done today and just basic painting and reassembly.

As for wiring goes, removing what I don't need, radio and stuff.  However, I am thinking of going with the M-Unit Blue, thoughts?

Duck, thanks for the comment and link.  I found a set of oem and going to go with them them since the last thing i need is high-performance parts lol

Laitch...I think I have read every page imaginable.  On here and on motorbrick.  This seems like it will be at 3-4 night...and an additional week...project that will cost more in beer then the unit.  

But...if I guess my goal would be less clutter and it would allow me to fully remove the ignition switch and seems like the starter button too so I can have minimal hand controls.

Wiring sucks a**h*les! Went thought the full harness today to determine where each othe relays and plugs went to.  That took about three hours...would have been easier if I marked each when pulling it out of the bike.

On a bright note, Santa was wearing a USPS suit today and brought everything I needed to finish the bike. 

I also took the tires off (they are old and dry rotting and got new ones) in preparation to clean and paint the wheels and started to reassemble the front fork.  

Next, is to finish the front end, mount new tires on the rims after painting, finish running the fuel hoses and put the tank/seat on. 

As for all the electrical, I going to follow these guys  https://www.k100-forum.com/t11686-m-unit-wiring-bmw-k. This is very intimidating, but taking my time and triple checking so I don’t end up with buying another harness...being colorblind sucks for this part.  My daughter was not happy helping me trace wires lol.

Hello everyone...so, the short answer and the long answer is...No...but I have not given up.  I have had a lot going on and now, I am fighting with the electrical.  This is, well hard.  I am hooking everything up, but without the computers on the bike, so I cannot fully test the electrical system.  

Updates worth mentioning, rims are being painted, m.unit blue is hooked up, handlebar controls are done, and all the gas hoses have been replaced, new pump in the tank.

Next:  Continue with wiring, put the tires on the rims and then rims on the bike.  Remove the oil filter and put a new one on, along with all fluids.  After all of that, I will put the computers on the bike to finish the electrical.  After all is said and done with that part, I will figure out the next path ahead.

If anyone is really good with electrical and lives near...I have beer

well...I guess I am too late than lol.  Yes, it was an odd time of the year.  Come back!! lol

But honestly, I see this part taking the longest.  I did mount the headlight in the bucket and will mount it on the bike in a few in preparation of running the wiring for it
