The other day I realised I have developed a cold starting technique which is probably
due to an error in the fuel system.
I go out, uncover the bike, turn on and give the start button a quick nudge.
I wait untill I hear the pump spin down then another brief nudge gets her fired up
immediately.
Hot starts no bother, just touch the button and away she goes.
I havent bothered to RTFM or search for info but guess its due to the fuel system
losing pressure when standing overnight and my little ritual gets the pressure up.

Edit: If I dont do my ritual I have to let it crank a lot and perhaps it would start
with extended use of the start button, but I dont like to crank it for more than a second or two

So, should I be alarmed?
If its a cheap easy fix I'll do it, I like cheap and easy
If its not vital but expensive I'll live with it cos I'm skint.
If its vital and expensive dont tell me I'll only get depressed and take to the bottle
( not that I ever needed much excuse for that) cold starting query Icon_lol

Thanks
Reg

I have used the exact same procedure since buying my 1986 K100RT five years ago. So far nothing has broken. Its not something I would worry about, all older F.I. systems loose pressure when left standing. In cars the system pressurises when you turn on the ignition (you can hear the fuel pump running for a couple of seconds). On the K100 this doesn't happen until you press the start button.

Hi Reg,
Replacing the pressure regulator should fix that. It is worth checking of course that you don't have any leaks in the fuel lines but a smell of petrol around the engine should give a clue to that if it is happening. The only other thing that can cause a pressure loss is leaking injectors which can allow the pressure to drop. My bet is on the FP regulator.

I think they changed the system on the 'K's as A-GT indicates. On the later bikes the pump comes on if you switch on the contact, on the earier ones only when you press the starter. This is a cause of great confusion when members are trying to help others and ask if the pump comes on when you switch it on contact. Not all of them do from new. I don't know exactly when the change happened, but a logic assumption would be with the change from the L-Jetronic to the Motronic ECU.
