Hi I'm thinking of fitting a large top box to hold two full face helmets say a 45 liter box or larger, will this affect stability at all ,I've already got panniers fitted ,Oh the bike is a r100 rt cheers.

I have a 48 litre box on mine and dont really notice anything different. I did a tour of scotland in august and the panniers were fully loaded and so was the top box with the brewing stuff, and trainers, jacket water etc and as i said i didnt notice anything when riding.

Obviously it was more work putting it on the centre stand with that extra weight, lol.

The topbox i have is the universal one u see on ebay and there really cheap but great.
Am looking for a givi one though as the square lines will match the bmw panniers a bit better.

Cheers thanks for your input,tried to put the bike on the main stand the other day whilst wearing slippers yep bit of a struggle who dares wins lol will get one from eBay would like a BMW one but there like rare as hens teeth and really expensive cheers Ian .

And the bmw ones for the k100 dont hold a helmet as there too small.

I have a Givi Maxia E52 top case on my RT. It doesn't look out of place and it can hold 2 Nolan N102 helmets. This (I think) is the largest unit Givi make. When we tour the maximum weights are (including the cases) - 12 kg for the top case and 9 kg for each pannier. I don't find this to be a problem 2-up, but one must always be mindful of the footing surface when stopped.
I've dropped the bike once when stopped due to slightly uneven surface and loose gravel under my left foot, bugger !

Uneven ground + gravel + my lack of care = much swearing. BTDT got the T shirt. So easy to happen on any big bike.

In answer to the question from Reddragon it is a yes and no answer because yes a top box can affect handling especially in side winds because of the wind loading which is almost behind the rear wheel exerts leverage and if one puts too much weight up there it is like carrying a stout passenger.

But most of the time one is unaware of it being there. I guess if one is passing a big lorry or coach or like in the fantastic description from TWB of passing a road train then with a big top box, extra care is needed due to the air blast and turbulence.
