Bike, K1100LT 1996, has been sitting for 2 weeks under its cover outside.  Finally got a warm dry day in portland Oregon and took bike to work.  12 mile ride warmed it up well.
At idle I now have a mechanical noise every 10 seconds, did not hear that at cold start up.  Very quick almost like an ignition miss but a mechanical noise.

Could this be the sprag clutch?  Pulling the clutch in does not change anything, still an intermittent noise.

thanks for sharing any advice or similar experience.

It's not the sprag.
Possible the cup of the generator, where the monkeynuts are.

While you have the generator out, check the axle on radial play.

Monkey nutz are the first place I would check as well.  Sprags just slip, rather than make a bunch of noise.

While the bearings aren't normally a problem, it's worth checking while the alternator is out.

attitude indicates this noise is made once every 10 seconds at ≈1000rpm which doesn't quite characterize it as a bunch. attitude also indicates that it's a mechanical noise but not whether it's a bing, ting, tink, tick, clang, clack, clunk, or knock, nor whether it falls into the category of cymbal, claves, castanets, cowbell, rimshot, gavel, grandfather clock or metronome. Perhaps the character of that noise could take center stage in the discussion. Laughing

Well now the noise is every 3 seconds and sounds like a small hammer hitting metal softly. Idle surging a bit. Thinking that alternator bearings and or monkey nuts might be failing. Sound familiar?
Its been 34 degrees in the morning and bike stored outside under mc cover.

Do you have someplace warm where you can work on this bike?  Pull the alternator off and check the monkey knutz and run the engine without it.  That will give another data point that might help us figure out what is going on.

Right now, what you are describing is not something that very few if any of the inmates have personally experienced.  Diagnosing an intermittent noise from a couple thousand miles away is difficult without some tests and inspections.  I know that I could really use some information on the status of your alternator.

What you can do without too much effort is check each spark plug to be sure its installed securely and inspect the coil wire connection to each spark plug to verify secure attachment to the plug. They shouldn't wiggle.

Or, as I discovered, exhaust stud issue left an exhaust flange los and occasionally rattling. It sounded like monkey nuts. So go under the head and check all the exhaust headers for studs and no loose flanges rattling.
