Hi Guys,

Although I registered in April '09, I never did introduce myself and say hello here so........

Another UK guy cheers

Originally from Liverpool, but worked in various parts of the UK, now living in a small village in Northamptonshire. Sort of retired, since our design and development group was closed down and moved to Italy and China. Nearly 40 years in the Telecomms industry, but currently helping out a car racing team, great fun and no stress!!

Purchased my first BMW (gold R100RS) in 1978. It has covered over 200,000 miles, and still has a home in my garage. Other bikes alongside it are 1979 R80/7, 1994 K1100LT, and 2001 R1150RT, 1959 Royal Enfield Constellation, and an MZ125. I gave the MZ a home when a friend got divorced.

For the last 7 years, I have been the administrator of the UK BMW Club's Tool Hire Facility, so have loads of special tools for models from the post /5 Boxer, through to the R1200 series. It's a way of putting something back into the hobby I have enjoyed since starting my riding on a Vespa 150 scooter Shocked in 1970.

For 30 years, my partner Sylvia and I have toured extensively in the UK, Europe, and even managed to borrow a BMW when visiting South Africa. This time five years ago we were in Sydney for a few days, before flying to Christchurch were we had arranged to hired a bike (BMW R1150RT) for a three week trip around New Zealand, now there's a place I would go back to.

This is a great forum, and hats off to Crazy Frog for all the hard work in creating it, and of course to all the forum members for sharing their wisdom Hi from the UK 22936

Mike

Welcome Mike. You should have stayed in Australia for that three weeks. This gives you an excuse for a longer trip mext time.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the welcome, much appreciated.

I must admit to never having a K100, as I went straight to a K1100LT in 1998, but I always try to keep abreast of as many of the models as possible. Having said that the latest S1000RR and K1600 models are a bit of a challenge. I haven't even priced up any special tools for the UK BMW Club yet.

After the NZ trip we went back to Melbourne to stay with relatives on the Mornington Peninsula for a week. Arrived Christmas Eve for dinner (they are of Polish decent), then took a trip down to Phillip Island on Christmas Day. I always said that I would like to get sand in my turkey Shocked , but instead got the barbie food and off we went. Well it was bloody freezing as we drank the wine and tried to eat the food, fending off the millions of gulls. Boxing day we went up to Mt Baw Baw which was still covered in a good depth of snow!

We were told it was the coldest Christmas for years, it was warmer in England!

Still had a good time, and you never know, we may make it back again.

A couple of the bikes.............

Hi 88KE,

I have been fortunate, in having been in employment since getting an apprenticeship when I left school, and a partner who enjoyed bike travel (until she came on holiday with me all those years ago had never been on a bike).

Ireland - a lovely country. We have been there a couple of times. In 1992 we decided to tag on a further few weeks camping to the FIM Motocamp Rally held in Kerry. Seemed like a good idea - It rained every day Laughing but we enjoyed it anyway, and the weather provided some stunning backdrops. When we got back our waterproofs were consigned to the dustbin Hi from the UK 178468 In 2001 we were asked to help out the hosting Dublin Motorcycle Touring Club at the 56th FIM Rally held in Killarney. We worked on the Flesk campsite holding 1200 participants from 29 countries, and also led some of the country groups on the 'Parade of Nations' hard work, but good fun.

That's an interesting link Mike, Thanks.

Kerry is legend for it's high annual rainfall (about 60 inches avg I think) It's the first land mass the warm Gulf Stream hits and the mountains don't help. That said I've only been there in lovely sunshine and the scenery is Wow! The locals call it "The Kingdom". The price of petrol here versus the UK makes it a great touring destination for motorists of all kinds. The main aim of getting back on a bike last year was for me and a mate to enjoy a couple of long weekends in the west for ourselves. Can't wait.
