OK,

I have installed a new Odyssey PC925 battery on my 1990 K100 and I'm now getting a fault light on my battery maintainer/charger. I have disconnected the power port wiring and have installed jumper straight to the battery, this way I just plug in the charger when finished riding. Any ideas on where to start? Awaiting your continued guidance.

Then probably your charger isn`t designed to be used on a AGM battery,
due to the lower inner resistance compared to a conventional wet cell.

AGM batteries also needs a slightly higher charging voltage, due to the higher
nominal cell voltage caused by higher specific gravity of the electrolyte.

Odyssey approved chargers.

I've been told that using a trickle charger constantly will halve the life of a battery. Mine is only 2 1/2 years old and starting to not hold a charge. I have been using a trickle charger constantly.
Is this a myth?

Wet cell Charlie, has been flattening out of late after a few days of no rides. It charges up to 13.5 ish but just won't hold it.
One solution for that, get a new one.

hmm ....most batteries love to be flattened periodically (well put under some kind of long discharge stress )

you have recharged the cells with distilled water lately havent you ? all too often i see the top cell almost dry of electrolyte after boiling it off in a fully charged state ...

good luck rt hope she last a few more months ....personally i would only be putting the trickle charger on once a month for a couple of days at a time ..

My experiance is with Optimate battery chargers which i find cause no problems at all. They also say that there is no problem with shortening the life of the batteries...
Batterys all have a life which is "gurranteed" by the manufactuer. On my car I use 4yr ones which surprisingly just after the yr point will start to experiance the same thing...

One problem could be the battery is suffering from sulphation on the plates, which a "real" charge will attempt to prevent by giving short bursts of very high current.
