hey all!

the season started, as the temperatures jumped above 0 degrees C and new (and old) problems came to light...as i am getting ready for a trip to Monte Negro this summer (~4kkm both ways) i need that bike to run like a baby;))

1. it starts very hard in the mornings and it got even worse when i switched from 10W40 to 20W50 but that's due to the oil being thick. even though, the bike runs very hard and if don't hold the revs around 2000rpm, it dies. also, when i push the start button, it floods immediately (can it run a bit too rich?). during that hard start, the engine rattles pretty loud. all those sympthoms go away when the engine gets warm. maybe the temperature sensor??

2. gearbox - it's pretty hard to change the gears sometimes, but not down (that's ok). it's hard to change the gears up - can it also be temperature related? oil viscosity etc....

just as a reminder - i cleaned all the connections with deoxit, changed the throttle rubbers, changed the engine breather, timing chain, air filter, fuel filter and did all the neccesary maintenance. sparks new, wires etc...

i am open to your comments guys!
thanks a bunch!!

I think 20 weight is abit heavy for 0 degrees C thats if its your daytime maximum. Here we get 0 degrees in the middle of the night occasionally in the july mornings before it warms again.

When you push the starter button the ECU gets a signal to give a rich mixture to help with starting. Most Ks will rattle and clang when cold and the colder the more so, providing it is ok when it warms then I would not be concerned.
I think that 20W50 oil is a bit thick for the temperatures you have at the moment.
Upshifting when the oil is thick will give you problems but it seems to be normal for the Ks to be like that. When downshifting the thick oil slows the gears so that the shift is smooth but it is working against the gears increasing speed as they need to do when going up a gear. This is what makes it feel lethargic.

+ 1 on the oil viscosity and cold ( for us ) temperatures

i thought i saw on the forum .. a while ago ....when attempting to start in really cold conditions ....put a lamp under the sump the night before ...so the heating effect warms the whole thing up a bit

If you use synthetic 20/50 should be fine but given the use of synthetic 5/50 or 10/40 or 25/50 are all available and have pour points down around -50 so will all be fine at 0 degrees.
