Bought a 1990 ex police LT 2 weeks ago and have yet to ride it! This excellent forum has made me paranoid and am carrying out all the checks advised before riding. Stripped the front end greased the steering head bearings and added fork gaiters, stripped out the rear end to check the splines. Front ones and uj like new, rear not so good (60000 miles) clutch arm all good as its had a plastic mud deflector added at some time point in its earlier life. To the point of my topic, the fan is running all the time with ignition on, any advice, known problems? Must say its not the nightmare to work on that i thought it would be, quite user friendly John

If the warning light also is on, check that the heat management relay is properly grounded.
And check the wire (violet/green) between the relay and the sensor for short to ground.

If the warning light don`t show up together with the fan running, I would search for a aftermounted bypass switch.

Many people put a fan override switch so as to be able to run the fan as soon as they get into heavy traffic and stop go traffic. check that one of the unused ex police switches may be rewired to do this or as Inge says eth on the temp sensing relay or a short to eth on that violet/green wire.

Had me baffled until removed the temp. sensing switch in box under the tank and found an additional wire looping two terminals together which fell out when i touched it! What a bodge. John

It is a sad problem that ex-Police bikes often have really badly bodged up wiring in their haste to sell them off after taking all the Police bits off.

Have been through it, front to back, and checked most of the issues flaged up in this excellent forum. Rode it for the first time, two weeks after buying it and after 22 years of running R80s, what do I think. Its heavy, handles and balances very well on the move, nice riding position, very little in the way of vibes, better then expected and no worse than my R80. The sensation of reving like a mad thing i will no doubt get used to, similar gearing to the R80, 5000 rpm at 80mph. I think its the start of a long friendship. I get the feeling when working on it despite its complexity, the guys who designed the K100 were motorcyclists. It is, to quote the modern venacular, user friendly. John
