Sorry folks but Bob again.

Why can't I select the 6th gear on my 86 K100RS ? or does it really only have 5 ?

The other thing is the top-end. I managed to get 150km/h maxed out in " 5th " so I take it that's the fastest it goes ?

Good Things

Hi Bob,
Only 5 speed, not 6.

Top speed is 220km/h.
Had an 87 K100RS which would cruise at high speeds all day long.

My 85 K100RT (w/ 150k km) will pull hard all day long and hitting 150 is easy with lots to go (still only a 5 speed).

If your scoot tops out at 150, it has issues...

Boby, if you are on 6000 rpm in 5. gear, speed is 160 kmh. on the good european highway bike can maintain 150 - 160 for hours. Speed depends on you, not on bike

Indeed Nino, It sounds about correct cruising round 160km/h . I find 140-160km/h to be a safe as possible on such an old bike.

Thanks

Age isnt poblem for K. You need good maintaned shock, forks, tires and brakes. Engine likes kilometers. Few days ago I finished 600 km trip from Dubrovnik to Zagreb. Last 100 km drove 150 - 180, not problem at all .

Bob, pull the speedo impulse transmitter out of the rear drive and clean it off.
If it is not clean, that could have the speedo give wonky readings.

Just a thought if you haven't checked it.

should be able to get over 150km/h, even with with our crap expensive fuel.

i did a trip recently and I did a few stints where I ran at max speed for each a good 20 minutes , with the rev counter showing me on the redline in 5th- speedo showing me just over 210km/h and my GPS showing me between 190-205km/h. (the roads in the western cape and northern cape are FANTASTIC .I thought the bike was going to give up and I would have burnt off all the engine oil-

no bike was happy felt thrilling but comfortable. I am not normally one to do this sort of thing, I know its stupid, and on my last occassion had a Kudu bull run out in front of me to my right ( we too drive on the proper side of the road.... left side....)- luckily he saw me first and turned back before I could hit anchors! took it a bit easier after that and enjoyed the scenery, and the game including springbok, Eland, even a tortoise many Meerkats and mongooses- even a cervil wild cat! but some of those geometrically straight roads in the southern Karoo can be so inviting!

small wonder I went through a rear tire in less than 2500km!

if this K100RT of mine is a nearly 30 year old cluncker - I can't wait to win the lotto and get me a new K1600!

In top gear on a smooth, straight road, with a disabled rev limiter, my K100RS* will smoothly and without fuss spin higher than 9300 rpm and the speedo needle will indicate over 245 km/h (152mph) and climb steadily, with panniers loaded for touring and my tucked-in total before dinner and a coupla beers weight of about 90 kilos aboard.

It is me who stops it from going any faster...

Yep you gotta watch those tortoises we get them here. They dash out in front of ya without any notice at all.
Many of the rednecks here have a great deal of trouble avoiding them but then I suppose that there is only just so much one brain cell can do in a limited time.

One the Glen Innes Grafton road In saw 155kph ( indicated) on mine with the sidecar and Anna on the back. It felt very comfortable and felt like it had plenty to go. I would have thought 170 maybe 180 with the chair attached! Will find out one day..................
