hi, a friend of mine have a strange problem: speedometer works properly, but odometer is stuck.
it's an original bike, no modifications, so I thought there is a problem with the step-by-step motor, or in the instrument assy.
he has some spare parts, also another instrumentation, but swapping leads to same problem.
any ideas? there's some kind of dedicated power wire to the step motor?
thanks in advance

The plastic gears that drive the odometer are very prone to crumbling with age and is very common. Considering that the same thing is happening to both sets of instruments I suggest that a close inspection is done to ensure both instruments haven't met with the same fate.
Gear sets are available a search of the forum should show where to get new ones.

Otto instruments recommend not lubricating the speedo gears as the grease contributes to the deterioration of the gears. mine were like cheese.

My friend too (me) has a similar problem, speedo works fine (calibrated now, hoorah!) but no Odometer/Tripmeter.  I've tried all the easy fixes - I've removed the cluster and dismantled it maybe 20 times so far Razz .  It worked fine when I bought the bike (1992 K100RS 16v) but after removing it the first time to calibrate the speedo the Odometer/Tripmeter never turned another wheel.  The gear teeth are cavity-free and the odometer can be turned by hand with little resistance.  I'm wondering if there is a way to supply 12v to the stepping motor to bench test it.  Any help from this Absolutely Fabulous Forum would be appreciated Smile

Easy bit first:  check that pin 16 (black/blue wire) on the block connectors is securely seated in the block. Don't pull the block off - eyeball it while the block is in situ. Pulling it off can move a loose pin back into the socket.

Not-so-easy bit: if you have an analogue (not digital) multimeter set it to the highest possible AC voltage, then poke the red probe into the black/blue wire and the black probe to earth. Start the bike. If the multimeter needle doesn't kick, switch the scale down one. If it still doesn't kick, check the black/blue connector on the bottom of the coils. If that's okay (no corrosion etc.) then there's a break somewhere else. As the black/blue wire only serves the tacho, any break in the wire should be relatively easy to find.
