Hi,
I just acquired a 85 K100 project bike that has an electrical gremlin or so I was told by the previous owner. I ahven't had time to sort out all the pieces he took off but the problem is that the starter runs as soon as the battery is connected without using the key or starter button. I'm hoping that it will be a simple find/fix and I can get this low mileage (approx. 23,000 miles on the odometer) K-bike running again.

I presently have a number of bikes ( 2 Urals, a Dnepr, 2 BMW's, Triumph Bonneville and others) so wrenching to me is half the fun.

Looking forward to posting questions and hope some of you in the forum can help me get this bike back on the road.

Hi motoleo welcome to the forum.
It needs a new starter relay. It was mostlikely started when the battery was low and the extra current makes the contacts weld together.

+1 on starter relay. It'll be that easy.

Make sure you have a full charge on the battery before you pull the trigger with the new relay. You may also be able to pull the relay apart and pop the welded contacts free, then file them flat again. Only a temporary fix though, you should replace that bad boy.

I just realized I do not have a workshop or owners manual. Can anyone tell me how to know which relay is the starter and where it is located? Any way I can down load a diagram or better yet the owners and workshop manual?

Once you get 3 posts up you can send a PM to Crazy Frog aka Bert and he will give you a password to the downloads section and in there is a fairy land information for your reading and download.
to get you through the relay you want is in the relay box which is under the rear of the fuel tank.
Lift the rear of the tank and there is a flat black lid which you remove to expose the relays for everything K.

Got the bike running this morning. Turns out it was not the starter relay but it was the load shedding relay. Once I replaced that, the starter would not turn with the battery attached. Next problem is the starter switch as it works intermittently. I bypassed that and used a starter button with clips to the starter, etc. and the bike fired up and ran.

Still need to fix the starter button problem, gets some comfortable bars (more swept back so I don't have to crouch or lean forward), install a new throttle cable, bleed front brakes, etc but at least I know the bike starts and runs!

Any suggestions on handlebars with more angle/swept back?
