I've got a couple of weeks off work so it's time to get stuck into it at last. I've stripped the 1100LT down to an engine and gearbox sitting on the floor.

Now it's the sidecars turn

The first challenge is to get the bike stable on the ground with no wheels or centrestand.

Tomorrow is more stripdown and start on cleaning bits. There will be more pics as it progresses.

More torque, better economy(=better fuel range). I know a few that have done the same and they all reckon its worthwhile.

The existing motor is quite tired and down on power so something had to be done regardless. The big stripdown/reassembly will mean a few things get tidied up along the way too.

I've had a win, both bikes are now stripped as far as they will be and I've discovered that I have a 3 row radiator in my '87 RS.  That will save me from having to look for one.

Now its time to start cleaning and preparing for reassembly. K parts spread all over the garage

I've been slack with pics and updates.  

But it's back together bar some small final jobs like wiring the sidecar and towbar wiring again. Also modifying the inner fairing panels to accept the temp and fuel guages. Have to mount the Motronic unit properly also, I do have room for it though under the low seat, though the sidecar top rear mount makes it snug.

The only real problems that fitting the 1100 motor threw up was the exhaust system.  It appears the K1100 cyl head mounts the exhaust a little lower and a little further forward than a K100 cyl head.  This caused some clearance problems with the sidecar subframe.  Otherwise there are few issues, some soldering of K1100 switch connectors to K100 switches etc.  Using the K1100 tank as the fuel gauge doesn't want to work with the K100 tank.

Tightened the steering head bearings a bit more than normal, at this stage I don't need a steering damper, there is no headshake.

Was it worth it.  Geez it goes hard now Smile The answer is YES.

I suppose it was inevitable that I forgot to tighten something. I triple checked everything for the chassis, sidecar mountings and front end. The back wheel was another story. I've had K rear wheels loosen on me before but it feels very different on three wheels than it does on two.

After feeling an odd vibration/noise, I pulled up to check and found a loose rear wheel, very loose. One snapped bolt, one bolt just sitting in the hole and the two still holding the wheel on well unscrewed. I found the snapped one and the conical seat just 30 metres back down the road. I tightened the 3 to get me home.

The remainder of the broken bolt was easy to remove. I replaced all 4 with new high tensile bolts (they are longer than the standard ones due to the billet rear wheel). No other damage done.

The other good news, it passed it annual roadworthy this afternoon.

Tomorrow new brake pads all round.
