Hello all,

I'm the new owner of a 1987 K100 LT in gold and not beige as it says in the V5.

One of you on here already know me but hello to the rest of you.

Only had the bike just over a week and already done 500 miles.  I use it for my work hack as my other bike is a Yamaha Tenere and i want to keep that for getting muddy.

So far the bike is great apart from a very heavy throttle which i must get sorted and a clutch that seems to get heavier while the engine is running.

I'm based near Salisbury so wave if you see me.

Mike

Heavy throttle?

I've had MoT testers add that as an advisory for years even when I point out that there's a screw to adjust the throttle action and I like it heavy (so that it doesn't close without positively being closed by me).

Have a look under the handlebar assembly for a big aluminium screw:

New member K75S%20%2886%29-L

New member K75S%20%2885%29-L

They don't all have them but it may be the cause.

A "positive close" throttle may also save you going through all the disconnecting your TPS malarkey too.

I was slightly disapointed mine said beige in the log book.... Much prefere Bahama Bronze (although that sounds like a sun tan lotion).

One thing I have found is that the rubber grip can work itself up against the switch block and that will cause the throttle to become stiff and sometimes it is as simple as when tou hold the grip that can exert enough pressure to make it tight but only when riding which makes for a good mystery.

Take the cover off (and brake master if you're industrious,) clean all of the old grease out and hose it down with silicone lubricant.  Having tried all sorts of stuff over the years, that's the only thing that I've found that will make a 2V throttle cable return well.

HI,

So you know me form the 'other' place then.  Yes Pats K is very nice indeed.  Since i got it i have jumped on it and ridden it in all weathers without any issue.

I am really enjoying the fairing and compared to the Tenere i love the seat.  But one thing i wasn't expecting is i am getting a bit of wrist and shoulder ache on long trips..i never got those on the Tenere but my backside would die first.

I've looked and i don't have that screw and spring nor anywhere to fit it.  Any ideas?

Mike,

Look under the housing and you'll see a white plastic blanking plug. It just hooks out revealing the thread and the point where the bush in the end of the screw makes contact.

Not all of the Ks had it and I have never worked out which ones did and didn't but there is a place to make a thread if you really want to do it.

The only K's I've seen without are the 16v models which need a different upper housing and the big aluminium damping screw:

New member K1%20BMW%20%28120%29-M

Even Boxers as far back as the /7 models all had the capacity to fit the screw.

Locate the hole that the bar mounted mirror goes through. There will be a recess between that and the main body of the throttle assembly. The blanking plug is recesses, you may need a torch and look directly into the recess to spot the plug.

Unfortunately, as these were e-bay items, I don't know from which models they originated.

BTW, welcome, Mike101,

My '84 RT doesn't have the blanking plug, unfortunately. Had it on my LT and it was useful.
Has anyone drilled and tapped a switch unit and what drill size and tap did you use?

Hi John,
To use the BMW screw the thread is an extra fine series, M8 x .75, so the tapping drill would be 7.3 mm.
Pity it's not a common size.

Cheers,
Paul.

Another option in that hole is the "Flip-a-Lever" which allows you to turn the throttle friction on and off.

Was looking for a 'Flip-a-Lever' but they seem to be hard to get and/or expensive.
Place in the States has them for $57 and one in Australia for $99! By the time you add p&p...
Looking on eBay I reckon Paul's idea of drilling and tapping could be done for about £20($30) including the friction screw.
Another little job for when it snows over the winter.

My K100 never had anything but a flat area which was part of the casting, no hole no plug just a place to put it.
I have a friend with a K75C and it has no hole.
The throttle locks are not legal in Australia and most bikes nowdays dont have them.

Rick,

I'm not saying that all bikes had the capacity, just that I've never seen one without (that includes all the ones we were supplied with at work).

I did sound a bit defensive but I didn't mean it that way.
The throttle lock thing became a bit of an issue in Australia for a while (between the states until the federal government made some design rules about it to cover all states) and BMW probably just said go get your own we don't want anything to do with it.
