I must have too much time on my hands K100mo10
Off work at the present, due to a blind car driver running into the side of my K100RS, doing major damage to both the bike and my leg. Well I have fixed the bike, well nearly anyway, just awaiting on a couple of bits to arrive from motoworks. During the chase for bits I found and bought a couple of K100RS wrecks. One of the wrecks was a '88 that had less than 100,000 k's on the clock. I dropped the engine covers and bearing caps off it to have a wee look, crank was perfect but bearings showed some wear, not much, could have just put the caps back on and used it the way it was. But I thought I may as well throw a set of shells at it. If I am doing bearings it seems a shame not to go a bit further and slip in a set of rings, front and rear seals, do the water pump while its in bits etc etc etc. I spotted the BMW engine stand in the K1100 manual and thought that would be handy, so set about making one.
The K100 motor, on its stand ready to start stripping. The stand is mounted on a pipe fixed to the bench to enable the complete engine assy to rotate.

Well I finally got around to making a start on this motor, pulled it down this morning, all the normal stuff happened, had to use the chisel on one clutch cover screw and one bell housing screw, fought for ages with the clutch o ring, but finally got it out and the bell housing off. then the panic set it, found fragments of a couple of gear teeth sitting in the bell housing area. Had a good look at all the gears at the back of the motor, all good, nothing damaged, although I did see that, although it is a /9/88 build motor it has got a 6 rivet drive hub, so the fragments must be from a previous event. the motor has definitely been opened up before, as there was silicon on all gasket joints.
Means now I have to pull it right down and make sure that there are no more fragments floating around just waiting to cause headaches.

Update, finished pulling motor down, nothing broken inside. Found lots more pieces of what I thought was bits of a broken gear, but on closer inspection turns out they are actually small pieces of stone, ie road chip. This motor came from a bike that went down hard in Auckland about 10 years ago and had a broken crankshaft cover, so it must have injested a handful of metal at the time. Oh well all good.

Almost ready now to fit to the bike, just waiting for a repair spline to come from Motobins, then the driveshaft and rear drive can go on and the whole unit can be wheeled to the bike and fitted

It's an incredible feeling to have slid your hand over all of the important bits, feeling the different shapes, searching for perfection, learning the surfaces intimately, to have fondled just about every working item on the important ride that you'll soon be firmly astride. To know full well that every piece is going to slide and pivot and turn just as the maker intended. To know that nothing is left to chance and that you'll reach the end of your ride with pleasure, a satisfied grin on your face for the effort involved, and that she'll be right for the next go. These K's, even with the hard miles on them, are still very steady old girls, made all the better in their reliability and steadfastness after a thorough working over. I'd like to think that, on some inanimate level, they enjoy the therapeutic mechanical massage as much as we do. Thanks for the inspiration! A job well done and worthy of another go.

What could you possibly mean? Remember, Crazy Frog says we must be able to have our wife/girlfriend/daughter be able to read the posts over our shoulder.

It's all in the family here. I must have too much time on my hands Icon_wink
