I'm from southeastern Wisconsin and recently bought a 1995 K1100LT.  I've got it running and am trying to figure out what I want to do about an exhaust that has the number four header pipe cracked completely off. I saw some references to this forum so applied to join and see if that opened up any additional information for me.

Other than the exhaust pipe, there may be an issue with the temperature warning light, but I put a battery, a new front tire, had the rear shock (Fox) rebuilt, cleaned it up a bunch and it is running. I really like the way it rides.

I used to ride Gold Wings, from 1997 through 2011, and did my own maintenance plus some wrenching on those and some friends' bikes.

Nice purchase and sound like you've got her just in time to really enjoy some of those big empty roads in and around Wisconsin. I never ventured to the SE of the state, but have many happy memories of visits to Greenbay and Marinette and spend a little free time exploring the place.

Cracking exhausts does seem to be a design/stress related issue with the K1100's - several posts about the issues and how people have tried to overcome the problem and very helpful members who will guide you along your way.

K1100 exhaust:

4V exhaust collector cracks are a common issue. Just about everyone who tires to get it fixed (usually via rewelding) finds that it justs cracks again.

1 - You can buy a used one on Fleabay and keep the header nuts properly torqued and hope that it doesn't happen again.

2 - You can keep on eye on Fleabay for a used Staintune or Remus. (Be sure to get the headers too.)

3 - You can buy a new Remus for $$$.

It's easy to confuse the two - the state is surrounded by water on all sides except Illinois.

Another option would be to replace the original system with an 8v exhaust.  I did that with my 16v K100RS when I got tired of the loud Remus exhaust the bike had when I got it. 

If you go that route, you want to install an O2 sensor spigot in the muffler.  Spigots can be had a for 20 bucks and then a few more to install.  You will also have to do a little bit of fiddling with  the mount to allow for the wider rear tire.  No big deal, just a couple of washers and longer screws.

My bike runs great with the 8v muffler and it sounds a lot quieter than the aftermarket Remus system it replaced.   I could be wrong, but I would say it runs stronger with the OEM system.   Not sure because it was replaced before everything loosened up from several years of storage.  I am sure that I definitely spent a lot less on the OEM exhaust than what I was able to sell my old Remus system for.

There's quiet and loud version of the Remus. I have the quiet version on my 94 RS and it's about as loud as stock.  A Staintune I had on one of my K75s was noticeably louder than the Remus.
