On the evening of August 21 I was suddenly in charge of this:

A funny thing happened right after the eclipse...... 36666625111_caf4b39bce_b

Unplanned, but it was the only compensation available to me in a boring situation. Here are a bunch more shots of the thing:

https://flic.kr/s/aHsm3sA8yb

1985 K100 RS as most here would recognize.

I was never a fan of K bikes, I didn't even know their letter LOL. In high school I saw "on any Sunday" when it was released. By 1977 I had a GS 750 (very hot at the time), a RM 250, and even a RL250!

By 1985 I was not riding any of them and off on other pursuits. In 2000 I bought another motorcycle, and today I have 2 great backcountry bikes, 07 250SX and 06 GG300txt. They are fully operational, so you know I had to spend considerable time with them Wink

So I've been on a crash K100 course, and I can't wait to ride it. Have not ridden a super bike since my Suzuki, which I rode into he ground, in all weathers from Davis Cali where I grew up.  I never met the guy who really rode this K100, but somebody was:

Broken Clutch Cable is sent for, and I'm going to change the oil, and check the basics. If you check the album you can see a brutal attempt to clean the beat up cosmetics was made with white paint, bondo, and poor masking. But the fundamentals seem OK so far. Starts right up, I was worried about the smoking....but it was on the sidestand, overfull of oil all winter, so I hear that will sort out on the road.

Short term I will get it safe and learn it with aero flow and fairing....I had a windjammer and stereo on my GS 750 LOL, then I will either try to clean it up a bit as a stocker, or go the way of many bricks it seems, cafe or scramble. I don't plan to sell it.

My name is Charlie, and I want introduce myself and say thanks to all the members here who have made this place an incredible repository of knowledge about this crazy motorcycle. I love it Smile

Hi Charlie welKome to the forum. Keep it in stock trim and do the tweaks to suit you and you'll never sell it.

Welcome uhoh7 , a bit of TLC and you will have yourself a great bike , had a look through your gallery , it seems all there you just need to undo the crap workmanship that has been doled out on this poor machine . a few things that I noticed , the fuel cap has been mounted backwards , they are supposed to open facing forward and either the front wheel is in backwards or the aftermarket EBC rotors have been put on the wrong sides . I could be wrong on this one , others will chime in I'm sure , the rear EBC disc drill pattern is what I'm looking at , the fronts are reversed to the rear

A funny thing happened right after the eclipse...... 177912 Oddly enough, the most expensive repair I can see is the R/H wing mirror! I wouldn't worry too much about the discs; the holes are only there to try and shed water while braking. IME they seem to make just about sod-all difference between them and solid discs.

Maybe not so obvious but... judging by the tyres, you'll need to replace the brake pads too.

Thanks for all the great replies!!

drum roll......the RS saddle bags!!! OMG they are huge (to me). Ordered a clasp of eBay to fix that missing one. I do need to carry crap around quite a bit. So I will be playing stock for a time at least, and if I do mod it, I may well still want them Wink

Think late 1944, Russian Front, boxers escaping back to the west.....my theme? LOL

Now is maybe the best time for stupid questions:

Those three big switches over the stem: on left I hit it, fan comes on. Tell me about that. Will the fan come on by itself? Or do I need to manage that? The center and right? I'd think one is flashing safety lights.

Obviously looks ugly, and I want to replace that hex cap. What is this for?

Somebody added the fan switch because some people like to run the fan manually for some reason.  From the factory your bike came with a temp "relay" that automatically runs the fan when needed.  If you want to test the factory fan setup then just let the bike sit and idle until you can hear the fan come on.  Keep an eye on the temp warning lamp in the cluster while doing this. If the temp warning light comes on before you hear the fan then your temp relay isn't working as it should.

The switch with a triangle is hazard flashers.

The hex cap in your picture is for filling the transmission.

All three are non-standard/aftermarket too. I suspect you'll find some wiring-loom-bodgery under the tank.

Shame about the hazard switch, the hazard was a plug in option, I fitted one to my 84RT, just bought the switch and it plugged right into the loom, connector under the gas tank.

Words of caution, DO NOT overfill the oils, engine and gearbox have defined levels, the final drive is up to the fill hole.

As advised check the fan operation. Some put the switch in as a manual over ride and if it comes on as normal before temp light then not much to worry about. But some put it in to get over a dud temperature sensor which is behind the radiator which has to come off to get at it. If that's the case then you have to manage it.

Parts availability is really good too.

Your third switch might have been heated grips? If so watch the wiring because a lot of the time unfused wires and even unswitched have been bodged in resulting in unexplained battery discharges.

By the way that last bike you bought looks a trifle underpowered.

Hi Charlie, and welkome.  Given your handle, otherbikes and location, I believe you post in the Leica M thread over on Fred Miranda as well.  Have loved your pictures over there and look forward to your getting this bike into fine form.
