Since the Hunter Krew are having a get together this week to discuss a route south to Boorowa it might be time to get some expressions of interest for those thinking of overnighting with us at the pub in Boorowa on the Thursday night (22 March), then one of us can give the pub a heads up maybe next week.
It's very likely that our route will see us lunching in Bathurst, so as happened last year, any Sydney kandidates who might like to run west over the mountains on Thursday could pick up the travelling circus in Bathurst.

Please copy and paste the list and add your name into your replies. I'll start.

I'm sure she will enjoy the trip down south, with many photo opportunities.
Kay's latest art exhibition in Guyra was a sell out! 13 of 13 collaboration works sold and 8 of her own sold. I'm off to buy more brushes and paint.

Hi All!    The Hunter Krew have had our Loffee meeting today and the 2018 Southern Long Cut has been organised.

The Hunter Valley residents will leave the Hunter Expressway northbound truck rest stop at Branxton at 7:00am on Thursday 22 March. We expect to be in Sandy Hollow around 8:15am to meet up with any northerners who may have stayed overnight in the region.

Morning smoko will be at Gulgong. Once topped up with koffee/food/fuel we'll head to Bathurst via the scenic route (check the attached map).

Lunch at Bathurst Maccas around 1:00pm will be the ideal meeting spot for anyone from the Sydney basin who wishes to join the travelling circus on our run down to Boorowa for our overnight stay. Rickmeister has volunteered to be the contact for organising accommodation at the Hotel in Boorowa so if you are intending to join us please add your name to the list I started above for his benefit. If anyone has already booked in Boorowa please send Rickmeister a PM so he is in the loop.

Friday morning will see us heading down to Tumut for lunch via a mostly scenic route then over the Snowy Mountains to our gathering point at the Jindabyne Holiday Park.

As always I am really looking forward to this trip.

Cheers

2018 Southern Long Cut

Rang the Boorowa Irish pub just now. Spoke with a bloke named Mike. Arranged digs for 9 people, which includes one couple, ie, Smithy and his lovely bride, Kay. He advised that it wouldn't be a problem...seemed to have plenty of rooms available. Funnily enough he remembered my name, so we haven't been banned yet  (just jokes!)

Booked it for Thursday night, 22nd March.

Bring it on!!

Rickmeister.

Any idea of the cost of the pub room at Boorowa (trying to budget for the trip)?
I'll be staying in a cabin at Jindabyne now. I'll have a spare bed if someone needs one.
I'll be staying down there for a few extra days to have a look around (it's a long way from home and I've never been there before).
Any suggestions for a good pub to stay in Oberon (for the return trip - again via a "scenic" route).

Thanks.

Andrew

Hi Pegasus
there is a quirky little pub near Oberon called the O'Connell hotel, at O'Connell. The trip up into that area is really scenic and twisty, full of forests and mad roads down to the Abercrombie river. Good road surface, all sealed. The pub is very old, cheap but has good food and an exceptionally nice local red. Also close to the home of Sean Kelly who owns what was Premier Sidecars.
Can get cool there.
Cheers

Looks to be gearing up for another excellent krew gathering , work schedules still have me lacking in time off for an extended weekend .
Having learnt my lesson on the first Snowy Ride, riding all night is not a good option.
So I will continue watching this thread with interest as the krew enjoy the kameraderie .

The month of the ride has come.  Smile

As noted, cabins seem to be the preferred accommodation this year, so I might look at reducing the camping space booking if I don't hear of more campers by, say, Saturday 10 March.

Don't despair, though. Even if someone decides at the last minute that they are able to make it, there will still be space, facilities and a welKome at Jindabyne for you.

Some of the people coming are ones I see a fair bit of, some not so often but I'm looking forward to catching up with any Krew who are able to come.  Smile

Olaf and the Eccentrics, still time to make that tube booking.  Wink

Well looks like I am out for this one my back is getting just too painful when I do a long ride. Even after 200k I get laid up for a few days and I don't want to be stuck in some hole when I can't ride because every bump is a whole new experience in pain.
So I reckon there is gonna be a few Ks for sale soon at reasonable prices.

Of course, it's pissing down with rain, flash flooding, road closures and all the rest of it. But...I guess that this is what blokes do, get out there, rain, hail or shine, even in the face of immense opposition...("You're a bloody idiot! I thought that you had more sense") and on it goes..." I'm still in!

Arrived home about 4:00pm yesterday afternoon after a fairly tough day in the saddle - more of that later.

Thursday morning at Branxton at 7:00am was still fairly dark and grim as the rain had been coming down for the last 24 hours. Nevertheless Rickmeister and myself along with two non forum friends Stuart (R1200GS) and Jacko (F700GS) headed off into the gloom expecting to ride out of the wet weather as we headed west to Merriwa to meet Smithy and Pegasus. Things were going well until we came up on a very long and very wide truck load travelling very slowly and nowhere to pass - so it was 1st & 2nd gear all the way to Denman. We managed to get past as the truck moved through the town area but this had made us 30 minutes late to the rendezvous and a concerned Smithy phoned up just as we were coming down the hill into Merriwa.

With our number now at 6 we pushed on through the rain which doggedly hung on all the way to our fuel/coffee stop at Gulgong. We found some level ground to park at the top end of town.

Fuelled up we then rode toward Mudgee and took the road up into the high country to Hill End where we decided to have lunch at the pub. Hill End was the centre of a gold producing area in the middle of the 19th century and apparently had a population of 30,000 - which steadily wound down as the gold ran out towards the end of the 1870s.

Five of us parked outside the pub.

and one hiding over the road (I think he liked the flat ground).

Fed (again) and watered and now out of the rain although the roads were still damp, our route dropped a few hundred metres in altitude running south to Bathurst and then south west down the Cowra road until we turned off into the small town of Woodstock. This turn took us onto a quiet sealed country road down to Wyangla Dam where we stopped briefly to stretch the legs.

The carefully considered route would have taken us over the dam wall road and onward toward Boorowa however the authorities had closed the road across the top of the dam wall and thoughtfully placed a "No Through Road" sign about 50 metres before the barrier. I suppose if they had placed the sign back at the last road junction approximately 20 kilometres back they would not have had the fun of seeing all these visitors turning around muttering to themselves.

Nevertheless we arrived at our familiar Irish Pub in Boorowa in plenty of time to relax with a few coldies and tell stories before dinner.

The next morning Andrew (Pegasus) expressed a desire for a stop at the famous "Dog on the Tuckerbox" memorial near Gundagai since Andrew had rarely ventured down around these parts before, so we headed there via the same picturesque country roads that we traversed last year through Harden and Jugiong before hitting the Hume Highway for the short section to Gundagai. I must say I never get tired of those early morning sections through farmland on the sealed country roads in that area.
Andrew, second from the right, looking very pleased to see the little dog behind him.

We were (un) lucky enough to have a few delays for road works between Gundagai and Tumut but then the fun really starts as you climb up to the top of the Snowy Mountains for the run south east over the alpine plateau. Really great roads and scenery rushing past up to our lunch stop at Adaminaby. This town was relocated to its present site when the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme was constructed. You can read about it here.

Once into our campsite at Jindabyne we were able to down a few more coldies - as you do, before enjoying a pasta, pizza and red wine evening at a restaurant over the road.

The loop ride devised by Bill for Saturday was fabulous. Across some of the Monaro high plains then down the eastern escarpment of the Great Dividing Range through rain forest to Wyndham to turn north through the rolling foothills up to Candelo for lunch at the pub.

Parked in the shade across from the pub after lunch.

We rode a few kilometres north from Candelo to meet up with the Snowy Mountains Highway near Bemboka for the climb back up the escarpment via this different road and onto our base at Jindabyne via Nimitabel and Cooma, with a short stop at Pipers Lookout on the way up the mountain.

Dinner in the campsite consisted of pizza and red wine while watching the rain and gusty winds that had returned as the evening wore on.

Early Sunday morning the phones started chirping with a severe weather warning of damaging winds and rain for a large swathe of southern New South Wales. This hastened our packing and departure in an effort to get away from the approaching storm front. The group heading for the Hunter decided to take the safer but boring highway route straight to Sydney but it was still a hard days riding battling the turbulent winds of the weather front which chased us all day.

A big thank you to Bill for again planning this ride and encouraging all to participate. I had a great time.

Cheers

P.S. Almost forgot - thanks to Forum Member Redrockmania who was apparently on a fishing trip in Jindabyne and left a note on my bike wishing us a good ride.

Great write up, Gaz!! As stated, the ride home, don't know how many Kms, was mind numbing. Got home at about 15:00, went to move the Battlestar Galactica into its resting place in the shed, but it decided to have a "nana nap", read "Old man completely tuckered out, no control..." As our previous illustrious Prime Minister (Paul Keating) once said.."This is the recession fall that we had to have..." I'm glad that I've got that out of the way.

Luckily, I fell over on the soft grass, abandoned ship on the way down and no damage to me or the Battlestar. (Had to re-insert the RHS mirror, which is designed to be frangible...).

Cheers, Rickmeister.

Thanks for posting the report Gaz
Sorry to all that I missed the get together and thanks Bill once again for organising it
Apologies for being a failure to attend
Before I left I replaced the output seal in the FD but was unable to get the correct one, so chose the next best with the correct ID/OD but it was 12mm thick instead of 8mm or whatever the correct one is, thought it would be ok
Not so, it started leaking virtually straight away ( noticed at the first fuel stop (250km) and by the time I got to Wagga Wagga I thought I had better make a plan. Unable to get the correct seal again from the bearing shop I again bought another "close" seal as a stop gap if needed and opted to start making my way home. Spent the day battling wind and rain same as you guys did. Managed to get home without fitting the dodgey seal and just topped up the FD a couple of times.

Hope to see you all next year

Just got around to transferring my round trip track into a Google Map that everyone can view for reference against ride reports. Just under 2,000km for me.

Click on this link for the round trip map

Cheers

Thanks for that Gaz - I really do like reading about trips in the upside-down part of the world. I can sympathise with the dam(n) road annoyance; last week the local authorities finally decided to do something about the winter potholes in the main road between home and Belfast. Good for them but... they closed the bloody road without warning and signed the closure at the traditional fifty metres from the road works. No advance warning of any kind, no diversion signs, nothing. And the roadworks were out of sight round a 60mph bend... clever. It was a one mile backtrack and a twelve mile diversion to arrive back on the main road about three hundred metres further up.

packo the 12 mm version can be cut back  , slice off the inner ring of rubber around the outer  of the seal . which will nearly cut 3 mm off the depth , so when fitted up to proper depth into the housing will be closer to the ridge on the drive  that precedes the seal wear area ,  but don't forget to lynish  (buff - sand with wet and dry ) the old seal area of the shaft  before fitting the new seal to allow it to bed in rather than be cut up by the crap layering on the normally exposed area ,
it works   try it .

great ride report again Gaz
would love to explore more of the snowies regions

ride well mate

Thanks for the write up Gaz.
I was watching the weather radar Saturday night thinking those of you who opted for cabins would have been very pleased with your decision.
Well done again Bill. Sorry I was only an onlooker again this year.

Best wishes,
