Well Chris I'm really glad the 'Kurz is no worse for wear and I thank you for demonstrating how durable these bikes are.  Very Happy  My favourite 'Whitton-ism' is still the time you left the key in the Madass while your bike was on display over a weekend.  The bike is looking and sounding great!

This is a fantastic turn out, a machine to actually ride and be enjoyed, with fine detail galore and one that is unique - not to be seen coming at you from the other direction at the average grey-haired gentlemens' Beemer rally...and here I am getting all wet about fabbing a simple axle spacer and calliper brackets for Big Block.

Oh, the shame.
Embarassed

The socks n sandals bit...me dad always did that. I reckon it was from his grand's ancestral origins in Great Timble, near to Fewston Res, the exact location probably underwater. My surname spelt as Thackeray, his originally spelt Thackwray.

Been past that place many many times, we camped with the kids for years just over the top from there and up the river Wharfe. The road past Fewston is still my route of choice up into the Yorkshire Dales, and if we've got time we go that way - the scenic way - up into Scotland.
Nice place to have your roots.

Few things to do yet. The tank lets it down, when I stripped the paint off it, it looked like it had been through a war. I had actually thought that BMW must have made a variant with no depressions for the side badges, cos the sides were flat. Turns out it had got substantial dings on both sides and had just been filled over. I spent ages re-filling it but the new paint just shows every bit of filler, and there's quite a bit. Shame, because its like new inside and totally corrosion free - shiny everywhere.
There's also some overspray to deal with on the sides, I'll do this and then either wait for a decent tank to appear on oohbay, or get in touch with Motorworks.
K75kforkurz - Page 7 Img_3111

I've also got an idea to replace the front position light with something a bit more aspirational - based on a hilariously expensive (after postage and import tax) old-style Motorsport roundel from San Jose Bee Em Dubbleyew in Caleefornyer - how exotic!
K75kforkurz - Page 7 Img_3113

Most importantly, I've realised that I made a schoolboy error with the footrests. I set the rearset position roughly the same as I've had on my K100 for a while. Of course, I overlooked the fact that everything is shifted rearward on this bike by the pitch of the 'missing' K100 cylinder, so they are too far forward (for me anyway) in relation to the rider position.
I've now realised that it's easier to imagine things as; taking a K100 engine and putting it in a K1100 frame (for the preferred steering geometry) and then cutting a 76mm vertical slice out of the middle of the bike (minus the tank) just where the rearmost cylinder is.  Shunt everything from the bellhousing forwards to close up the 76mm gap, and add a paralever. Put the tank back on and it kind of makes the rear of the tank (and the rider) further back in relation to the gearbox - that's why my footrests are further forward than I expected! phew!

merely trivial occurrences chris .... sally forward ...I say

whilst we may strive for perfection , in reality if no one has noticed this already ....most are unlikely to find the blemish ....or what I say ....."gives it character" ....or a point for discussion ...if they don't question the history ...does their opinion really matter at all ....eh ?

K75kforkurz - Page 7 01117

Oh, y'know..
K75kforkurz - Page 7 01014

YAAAAAAY!!  cheers

...actually, it needed a re-test: failed first time 'cos the front brake microswitch had readjusted itself to leave the brake light permanently on, some idiot had forgotten to put the spring clips in the front brake pad retaining pins, and the same idiot had managed to put the front wheel in the wrong way round - the eagle-eyed tester happened to notice the big daft marker pen arrows that the same idiot always draws on the rim to prevent this happening!
Oh, and the back brake bracket was missing a weld. Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Anyway, this is still my favourite bit of the bike!

Love this shot of the bike Chris!  The paralever up-grade, big wide tire and small silencer just scream speed.  I hope your build gets some exposure so that it will show others how to cafe a K75 properly and congratulations on getting the bike registered.

In the pursuit of cool, and nothing else, here's the aspirational front emblem/position light/too much time on my hands combo, completed today:

Quick bit of info
Compression test yesterday showed an absolutely even 10.5 bar/152 psi on all 3 cylinders. Bearing in mind the state this engine was in (tons of crud in the bores from being stood/abandoned, poor valve seating, seized crank etc.) and the way I subjected it to a no-investment rebuild with the original head gasket etc. and then ran it without oil for a while, then this must show the stupendous durability of these old lumps. Which I suppose we all knew about anyway Laughing Happy days!

Some tweaks:

Just two hundred or so local, thrashed miles in a month and not too much has fallen off. I've been busy making a few mods though:

Clip Ons

They were just too 'clip on' for my aged bod. Even to the extent that I had to alter a set of leathers so's I could actually look up enough to see the road ahead. They worked well enough when the sap had risen and I was slinging the thing around, but slower speeds were too painful a reminder of my age and inflexibility. So here's a pair of snazzy, super-adjustable things, they're mainly flatter than true 7 degree inclined clip ons so my hands are thankfully an inch or two higher:
K75kforkurz - Page 7 03011
K75kforkurz - Page 7 02411

Speedo sender

Turns out that my scheme to replace the OE sender with a super-affordable chinese NPN inductive proximity switch, failed. It worked well enough coupled directly to the oohbay instruments of doom (many threads refer) but it seems that its maximum response rate of 500Hz (chinese Hertz) equated to a rest-of-the-world rate of around 250Hz, above which it sort of went a bit funny. This equated to around 90mph, at which point the speedometer spat its dummy out. The scientific explanation for this is simple: chinese seconds are twice as long as everyone else's seconds, that's why they can be so darn productive. The solution was a very bulky, super ugly looking, Telemechanique sensor, which costs around the same as a second hand OE sensor. No progress there then.

A bit of livery

As a blue entity, the thing was very plain. So I incorporated some stick-on reading material:
K75kforkurz - Page 7 05110
K75kforkurz - Page 7 05910

And here's a contribution from Stan The Man, arrived today from Australia, delivered by the Qween of Engerland no less (well it was her picture on the stamp):
K75kforkurz - Page 7 04710

And this chap goes everywhere with me:
K75kforkurz - Page 7 05010

Lastly, turns out that she is a bit of a dirty girl. I'd blame wear in the bores, but the compression test showed no issues there, so who knows? Anyways, a oil catch can was called for.
K75kforkurz - Page 7 00712
K75kforkurz - Page 7 01015

The spigot on the front end of the catch can is for draining the thing off when it's on the side stand.
Now, all I need to do is find some environmentally conscious means of disposing of that nasty, dirty, anti-social, polluting stuff that comes out.

Oh wait!
.........I've had an idea!  Very Happy
