I suppose this is a really stupid question, but wouldn't it be easier to position to see the Aurora Australis? Otherwise, Iceland is a good bet at almost any time during the northern winter in the next couyple of years. We're just over the hump of the current solar maximum and coronal activity is still on-going, but it will be starting to die away. However, being winter, do go with the knowledge you might be disappointed by cloud cover. Sunrise and sunset in Rejkavik at this time of year is approx 11.00 and 16.30.

We tried to go two years ago and got stuffed by an almightly snowstorm.

If you type Iceland into the forum's search box on its main page, I think you'll find a few members' posts.

Whitehorse or Dawson City in Yukon Territory are ideal on the 'west coast', otherwise you'd be so remote as to make it prohibitively expensive to reach a viable place. Vancouver BC is cheap n easy to fly into from OZ first.

I note you distinctly don't mention the US, otherwise I'd say Fairbanks Alaska, since it's the furthest north of any major North American city, and easy to get to via Anchorage AK or Seattle WA, and you could have a squiz at Denali (formerly Mt McKinley) while you're at it.

I've seen Northern Lights from Montana.

(No planning involved. It was just dumb luck.)

Looks like the Cannucks are going all-out here for national promotion... Off topic question 44271 Off topic question 44271

If you're at all interested in history to go with your aurora borealis, a trip to Iceland could also net you a trip to Thingvellir. Thingvellir is generally recognised as the birthplace of parliamentary democracy and yes, it was on our hit list for the ill-fated trip.

About 10 years ago I went to Greenland, had an amazing time! We went in March so we had -40 degrees and Lights every night.

Spent some time travelling by dog sled on the tundra and doing some ice climbing up a glacier as well as just exploring and having fun.

Not an easy place to get to as it's only Air Greenland that fly there and I think they also only fly from Denmark (also a great place to visit), and flights at that time of year were 1 a week.

Bikes might be fun in the summer months but I wouldn't fancy it during the winter, You might want one of these instead!!!Off topic question Hpim0110
