Does anyone know of any custom framed K100's or maybe know where I can see some pics & info on any heavily modified K100's,cafe racer,chopper,lowrider etc.I'm looking for some inspiration for a winter project but all I seem to come up with through google are poor hack jobs that are probably just a waste of a good bike.I have my own machine shop & also have the services of my friends fabrication shop so making parts is no issue but
I'm stuck for ideas although I like the general theme of a K100 based cruiser...

Smithy - first you need to decide WHAT you want to build - Cafe Racer, Streetfighter, Race Replica, Lowrider [ Chopper / Bobber ]..................

Each one has it's own demands on the basic Kay shape / make up.

F'rinstance - Streetfighter is the simplest and still allows a degree of individuality - ie noranothafugginbandit.

You can go with all sorts of tail pieces [ I used R1], headlamp fairing, upswept exhaust, Renthals, etc.,etc.,etc. Larger wheels ? No probs - K1100 3 spokes will fit K100's [ need k1100 forks ] and K1200 / R1100S will fit K1100. Rears a straight swap in, fronts require a modified spindle - I'm still working om that. That gives you a 5" / 5.5" rear with a 180 tyre - a bit more like it.

Lowrider / Bobber...... again no real problem - lower the whole plot, lower seat height, Wire or Cast wheels - The tank is the only problem and we're getting round that on my mate's version by making a false grp H-D style tank to cover the stock tank.

Race Rep - no probs - wheels / brakes as above. I am using an R6 [ '09] fairing - just as BMW did when they were developing the S1000RR. Did use a 916 fairing, but it looked "old hat".

Cafe Racer - several considerations, IF it's a 60's Brit style iconic look then you need Wire spoked alloy wheels [ IMO ], AJS 7R or similar style tank, ditto race seat. Clip-Ons chrome headlamp, and a suitable period silencer [ Gold Star?]. I've gathered all the parts for mine, just need to bite the bullet for the £300+ I need to have a period CR style tank made. Radiators are a bit naff [ although WERE around in the 60's] - so I've "hidden" mine behind the engine where the battery used to live 'ish.
A Japanese era Cafe Racer would be simpler as cast wheels were in by then.

Both pix are "work in progress". The Fighter is a little closer than this pic. 5" 5 spoke k1200 rear wheel in, just awaiting aforementioned spindle mods for the front - then it's a strip down, detail and paint.
CR is the collection of bits - just awaiting a tank resolution - I might just polish it for the time being [ alloy ] but that would be a bit of a cop out for me.

BTW - there were several special framed Kays.

The first was the Cobas Endurance racer that was so successful - they banned it! On the basis that you can't use FI. That used a Duke style trellis frame and raised the power train approx 9" in the chassis. That bike is still around and occassionally comes out for parades and so on.

Second was the Brune version that also used a trellis frame, although both were just variations of the stock item. There were 100 frames laid down originally as a limited run. The most radical was the Futuro which was a recumbant with hub centre steering - pure one off styling excercise.

There were other specialist manufacturers [ Like Nico Bakker ] that made limited edition ranges based on the Kay CDS powertrain

Hub centre steering was also in the more recent Vyrus very much like the Futuro. Picture herewith.

thanks to you all,I've got a reasonably clear direction now,for the front end hub centre steering would be great but I suspect a Hossack type system would be easier constructed,frame wise I think a stressed member box section would be the better choice & has potential for incorporating an air box etc....I guess now I have to decide which BM is in for the chop & start measuring up & get some drawings together..thanks again for all your idea's

Have a look at this thread. It says K75, but there are some K100s in there too.

Smithy if I had the resourses I would love a K100 styled as a 1947 to 53 type Indian they look fantastic, HD have the road King and the 2010 - 2011 models with those sweet looking saddle bags really do it. And of corse no-one has done it yet on a K series The Honda Chopper boys have done a few fat front tyred Fours but no-one has done it to a BMW. You could be the first.

$3011 it went for, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it.

If a bike is presented for concourse judging and it doesn't have matching numbers when they came from the factory that way then it is a no go and that pile of crap had the matching numbers. In old bikes they are very hard to come by.

Smithy have you considered a yamaha GTR1000 type front end for the K? actually the paralever style of a lower swingarm connected to the fork brace and a tripple tree modded to handle the pivot of the forks would test the mettle of most of us mechanicly. How about you? The heat dissapation issue could be covered by using 2 radiators either side of the frame and ducted out the side fairings away from the front swingarm. Have you decided on a roadster or a streetster? Luxo tourer??

Looks like a Nico Bakker from that period, that dutch company did offer complete kits.
You only needed the engine/gearbox/FD.

Just curious but what are the spoked wheels off in the picture there Beachcomber?

It was the wheels and the frame that made me think yamaha, Nico does a good job thats for sure. maybe marvic or campaglio were lite enough for nico to use

They use 17" rear and 18" front dont they? So where can i get some cheap i wonder. I've got a soft spot for spoke wheels. Good thing about those ones is they are tubeless.

Putting a cross spoked wheel on the rear of a K bike requires some innovation. The spokes interfere with the stock rear brake caliper. There is no simple work around either. You have to find a way to use the oilhead GS rear caliper, and that requires a different inner final drive housing on a Parelever conversion or a custom adapter bracket if you intend to keep the old Monolever rear end. The shock on a K bike final drive also interfers with this caliper. One conversion I saw used a GS final drive on a Paralever so the shock mounted to the swingarm instead of the final drive housing, leaving room for the caliper. It is a game of millimeters.

On the front you have to use different wheel bearings and, depending on which fork you have, you may have to use custom caliper adapters to fit calipers to the GS front rotors. I have seen it done successfully on a Paralever conversion K75 but the amount of work is not trivial.

You know I'd be tempted to go the other way bert, in 1994ish BMW brought out a R100 mystic with spoke wire wheels that fit the then used K100 forks, and it had a drum brake rear, so just by using a K75c F/D casing you can go that route and fit wire wheels to your special K bike and the drum wouldn't be all that bad either

It actually came up when I was over at the BM shop on friday. He said there was a front that would bolt straight up, same bearings discs etc. He had an R1150GS sitting there and said that the rear wheel would bolt on no worries except for the offset. If thats the case Ash's wheel works at albion could weave his magic on it.
He did also state there was a drum brake spoke wheel that would go on but didnt mention changing FD.
Of course this all hinges on getting wheels at the right price.

Mine has some modifications on rear of the frame. Frame is also coated with teflon. I should change the handlebar, but I think I wont do it until at winter 13-14. Otherwise I like the look of this brick. I know many dont. Pics:

Made some modifications. Pics will be seen in the K pics section. Maybe tomorrow.

The rear frame should go all the way back to the original tail light location. The stock mud flap attaches to the rear of the frame. Yours is cut off.

Maybe there is some kind of attacheable part of frame there, but I think my frame is not cut off.

EDIT: And now I looked my bikes frame again and I see that I was wrong. It looks like that original frame, but it is shortened from the rear. It is done well, since I have not noticed any weldings or anything. So it is modified after all.

Man, it's hard to see the loop at the rear of your frame!

If you compare that frame picture to my frame you may see why I first thought that it is not altered. Then again the real photo of the frame shows clearly the differences.

Honda made a four bmw made a four and indian made a four but harley davidson didnt. really lets look at this nonsensically (i was going to start this with Seriously but even I realise I aint) Its a great riding position it has street cred its just short an engine that wont boil and missing a final drive that is by shaft, everything else is ok. perhaps this is alittle tongue in cheek but lets face it non of us are talking fast enough to actually bite one tongue, lest of corse its an instruction, which I'm sure i'll receive before too long

Just to keep the record straight, Mr Rogers, President of the Indian Motor Cycle Co., met with Phil Vincent in 1949 to discuss using Vincent twin engines in their bikes. A Chief was duly sent to Stevenage UK; to quote Phil Vincent, "In due course this arrived late in August and Phil Irving and his merry boys in the drawing office had the engine incorporated into the Indian frame so neatly that it looked as if the frame had been specially designed to fit the engine........In spite of our efforts we did not receive any orders for Vindians for the simple reason that Mr Rogers (also Vincent importer) thought that the Black Shadows and Rapides were far better motorcycles and more suited to their market."
