just a bit of a lubricate of the splines before the run south ...but the splines are way worn , have spares to replace soonish
topped up all the fluids
luggage fitted up
with just about 10,000 klms since recommissioned
waiting to be off .

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240310
above , the gerty box , just the right size to support the bevelbox when sideways and when refitting the gearbox , lines up just perfectly ,  the block of wood under the swing arm is my clutch housing main seal insertion tool , which just happens to support the swing arm in just the right place when extracting the bevel box ....lol

Do both the wooden items have BMW part numbers? Are they still in production or are they just reproductions? Good to see that these parts may be home grown. Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 652573

Sorry chaps but I am a late withdrawal.  I popped over to Kiwiland for the weekend and ended up with the lurgy.

Still fighting the effects of the flu or whatever it is so riding is out of the question for the moment.  Nowhere near as bad as covid that I had in November but my motivation levels are quite low.  Bloody Kiwis!

Anyway, have a good time and Uli, if you can drink my quantity of grog to make up for my absence, it would be appreciated.

Hopefully I will see you all in May at Bathurst.

It only took a coupla weeks to find that missing uranium capsule which fell through an open bolt hole in the bed of the transporter in the vastness of Western Australia a year ago, Charlie! It was only 6mm x 8mm and they located it. Maybe a backtrack of your travels is in order.

Yes if only 6 8 or 10   ihave spares
I didhave  a spare nut for thst feel sure i replsced one a while bak
But .....forgot to replace it into my rolling stock of spare
Better put that stud in there as well eh ?
The stud comming out of the bevel box was quiye bent , with thr last frwthreads screwed...im guessing that the pannir bracket held the shock in place for a numbrr of kilometers till i lifted up onto center stand   then all fell to the ground....
Gaz had another stud      ....and this morning looking for a suitable nut to tie it sll together
Bloomin lost the sidecar paul stud brace ss well

Poh well shops will open soon  , and snother search will start
And hopefully trundle off with the 6 member crew towards Tumut   then over the big hills , later today
Expecting extreeme heat warnings  where we're headed ....sheesh !
Fingers crossef  eh ?

We were blessed with virtually no rain - the short light rain we had one day soon dried off as we exited the rain cloud. Top temperature was 38 C near Orbost. Mechanical issues were resolved. Try to buy a suitable spring for a brake pedal repair at a hardware or $2 shop today - forget it...however a stout rubber band worked just fine.
Great company and the country in overall great shape.
Tent issue was resolved due to Charlie's lateral thinking and judicious application of okky straps - Yes I forgot to pack the tent poles.
Discussions were had looking at future rides. Bonza

That looks like a fine route and ride you lads enjoyed. I trust the weather didn't throw up too much drama, cooling systems prevailed, and you got your various mechanical issues sorted.

Round here, as spring slowly arrives (the astrological variety, not the OZ-favoured meteorological), with all the rain, any plans for a ride sink faster than a three-way submarine deal with the Pentagon.

Well here we go again
This southern jaunt being my first trip to the snowies since 2019 in between the covid hiatus when we had a break from the initial outbreak and the second coming ,,,and at that time to Omeo , Falls Creek and others .

This time off to southern regions again, like Cooma to Bombala and beyond
For me the furthest south I have travelled by motor vehicle …(been to melbourne x 5 times , adelaide x 8 , hobart x 10  and many others , for work stuff ,)  but never before to the south coastal regions of the Orbost coast area.
Orbost _Marlo (on the coast ) being the mouth of the great Snowy River which rises in the snow fields of the Kousiosko mountians some 150 klms off in the hills , (which we passed on the way ), part of the great snowy Hydo scheme created nearly 60 years ago , and out winter playfields.

For us northern tableland folks , Smithy , Murray (red rockmania ) and myself  we met at Uralla about 9:30 am  and progressed down the road to the bottom of the Moonby hill climb , where the topography decends some 1000 feet onto the Liverpool plains of Tamworth and regions extending to the Upper Hunter area .

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240321

We dashed across the Moonby pass to avoid the busy Tamworth city centre  and on towards Gunedah , stopping for a drink along the way .
Then on through to Mallaey (of historic family history from my grandmothers side of the family ) and through to Coolah .
The hills and open plains of the area are fantasic change from the norther tablelands and the roads well enjoyed by the crew heading southwards.

At Coolah, lunch at a bakery, topup with fuel and then onto Ulan for our overnighter at “the Globe” in Rylstone , stopping along the way in the verry warm days afternoon at a tiny pub in the bush …

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240322

Rylestone reached and some good grub and beers made for a good night , before the expected meet up with Gaz ans Ully as they passed through next day  , on the way to explore Portland , some 80 – 90 klms east . looking for a likely candidate for futrue overnight stays ?

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240323

Luch at Portland was nice , then off to  Young  through much the same topography and verry warm conditions .

Somewhere along the way I lost the nut holding the shock bottom mount to bevel box and as I pulled into Young (the Australian Hotel )  and attempted to raise the RED bike onto centre stand it became obvious that there was an issue , as on lifting it became verry akward , then dropped quite some height as the shock came clear of the stud out of the bevel box and dropped to almost belly on the ground ….bugga !!!!!

So  a quick phone call to Gaz .staying at RT”s place with Ully , to question if they had  set of  vice grips to remove – unscrew the stud for straightening , before refitting the shock to the stud , revealed that Gaz carried a spare stud  with him …WOW !!!

At that  time Bill  turned into the parking lot with just the thing , and Gaz and crew would be attending soon ..

Smithy and I removed the stud , bent ..but maybe recoverable in the mean time , with designs of visiting a local hardware to replace the nut in the AM .

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240324

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240325

What followed was a great reunion of souls in the bar , with Bobs wife Sharon , who I hadnt seen since early 2011 , and enjoyable night was had by all .

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240326

Next day up at 5:30  off to find Bunnings , just down the road a few hunderd meters  Nylock Nut, spring washers and flat washers were obtained …...phew …( the spring washer was to replace the 12 to 14 mm ferule that adapted the shock to the stud . the flat washer to hold the assembly into the gimble – ball mount of the shock securely .  ...we lost the foot brake return spring durring this operation ...a rubber band solved the issue that Gaz was trying to diagnose as we travelled further ...lol

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240327

Then off as a group of 7 this time ….destination Cooma  , after traversing the glorious hills and terain of Murrumburrah – Harding  and south ,  Bill took us on adventure into the hills and valleys not often travelled toward Tumit ..where we had lunch .

Luch done, up the steep incline out of Tumut into the Yarongobilly hills and over the pass of snow lined pickets marking the road of snow line territory , I stopped to grab a pic at Kiandra … , at one time claimed to be one of the highest altitude settlements in australia .
But honestly Guyra  is also up there at almost the same elevation , the difference being the high snowfall being around Kiandra for some months of the year , I guess being in the proximity and sharing the open flats of the snow country .

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240328

Down the other side into Adaminaby , where we stopped for a drink  then onto Cooma with threatening clouds dumping rain , which looked as though we were bound to wear some wet …. Brief though it was , was a welcome change to the near heatwave conditions forecast for this area in coming days .

The Alpine hotel in Cooma was a blast , with massive crowd in, secure parking for us lot   , band playing and a beer garden out the back  great food ,,…whats not to like ?????

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240329

As\all mornings with the “Crew” , Next day  COFFEE top of the list  bakeries – cafes found and addiction sorted , and off we go , for me never travelled before .
Off to Bombala …fantastic roads of nice sweepers hilly country and  glorious views ..

The town Bombala , quite small but a heap of all types of bike lined the streets ,  again Coffe stop , cat hearding to get away , then off to Delegate and into Victoria where the roads instantly turned to shit …. .

The road down the hill on the Vic side an awesome adventure , more suitable to GS style bikes being verry twisy , but Quite rough and unpredictable …103 klms of tight twisty stuff all down hill with added holes in the road to test your wrist strength and fortitude ….lol

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240330

Rear wheel Bolts came loose on that section …omg …tightened,,, (…I have had an issue with my right hand of recent weeks and predict my torque strength in that hand   was no where near normal , I had broken my little finger , and since the locals greeted me with that hearty “Country Handshake “…I recon the hand shakes did more damage than the initial injury …..sheesh …no damage done and on we go …it’s a long trek down that hill….   Some did it when it was dirt …crazy I recon …!!…

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240336

Off through Orbost…  and on the coastal village of Marlo , pub for lunch ..and welcome relief  with coastal breezes cooling the near heatwave conditions of 38 c through the day again . then back to Orbost pub for the night .
strange for me , all my life if i wanted to get to the beach its always east ,, but down here ...its south ...good grief ...i wasnt aware of it till the next morning when the sun came up 90 degrees to the coast line ....WOW

Next day, Monday …off through Marlo along the coast , visiting  Mallacoota , a township ravaged by the fires back in 2019 , evidence of the burn viewed for many kilometers on the way in and out , although now green with new foliage from burnt trunks of the trees ..a wonderful sea front and lake complex with many long weekend holiday makers making their presence .

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240331

Lunch done off up the coast back into nsw , Eden  and many smaller coastal towns traversed  turning off at Pambula onto the coastal road  out to Tathra …a magic place .
I had a nephew there so he and family were able to visit us  . Murry and myself at the eco camp site, the others on the headland with opulent priced beer and goodies I expect …lol

5 am and onto the beach , engulfed with sea mist , a lone fishermen and fitness freaks pounding the pavement along the foreshores  .. a Canberra holiday as well so many visitors.

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240332

8:30 and time to be off …. If you can heard the cats again from the local bakery and their coffee  …lol

again small coastal villages with many tourists made for heavy traffic around the small pass through town towards Batemans bay , great tall stands of gums and ferns all the way through beautiful valleys along the way …….at BatemansBay turn up to Braidwood… returning Canberrrans , like sheep , causing major traffic dumbness and frustration to all around them , I had super fun on the overtake sections with almost footpeg grinding hills and corners all the way ,…smitty way out in front ….Gaz Ully Bill  . back in batemans bay sipping coffee …lol

a 10 kilometer back up of traffic was experienced at Braidwood ..id guess the same result every year ….
For me off to Canberra  to hopefully meet my younger brother , lost to family members for many years ….after 4 hours of waiting at his workshop I gave up and sought to find some shelter .
So headed off northish …as long as I could get closer to a one day dash for home , as resources had just about run out …

Some 160 klms north out of Canberra , Luckily spied the front wheel of Smithys bike as I was heading through Taralga …heading to the showground there , mainly bluestone buildings through this village , quite striking . I believed all accommodation was booked out and show ground was a likely place to camp.
At the pub  the car shed out the back was full of bikes , some 12 or more gs adv types ….

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240333

Well …shock-me , I was talking to the chef – cook whilst there and surprisingly he offered me the back garden to camp  as after hours and show reception office likely to be closed ,  he was saying never been done before as the garden was kept private by previous owners ….but hey im not complaining …. Good pizza and beer was there …and a challenge match between Ully and Smithy on the Pool table …happens almost every trip ….lol

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240334

5:15 next morning with many kilometers to travel , smithy woke me before  alarm wake time …”lets get going “(800 + klm + for me to get home ) …by 6.00am  we were on the road dodging big roos , wombats rabbits and all sorts of vermin through the fog …..yikes …   and on we pressed  .
Out of the gorges and onto of the Oberon highlands quite cool indeed , a welcome change …

through Bathurst , and onto Rylstone again for some food as the temperature was rising again about 10:00 ish

 Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240335

through Bylong valley , a good run then into the hunter , with planned fill up at Murrarundi …and quick food stop at Wallabadah …then the sprint home , Smithy planning a 16:00 home time …round abouts

I stopped at Uralla as I saw Smithy leaving town some one kilometer in front …so just pressed on after, and made it home about 17:30

Poor old RED covered in road works grime and all the detritus that 3000 klm road trips tend to gather …

Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 20240337

Next is our MAY - ROSCCO ride south again to Bathurst…it comes around so quick ….better get ready for the cold not long to go before wood burning season hits us up here in less thana month or so …11 deg c overnight a welcome change from the trip south eh ?

A gearbox rework is due on RED before then , I should have done it before this trip but she hung together …groaning all the time , (likely input shaft conical bearings need the works )  so will start as soon as I can , I do have a spare hanging in Gerty , just redone a couple of months ago , maybe just a swap out ?

Anyhow …great camaraderie and many beers and stories to be enjoyed yet again

Wouldn’t be dead for QUIDS
.

Great ride reports all - Charlie, the extra detail is much appreciated (I know how long it takes to commit memory to pixels).

Wish I could have been there too…I had a glimmer of hope of a short (2-3 year) job down that way, but sadly the company I work for weren’t successful on their Aussie $ bonanza contract bid. Let’s see what new opportunities arise as your government realise the size of the problem their egos have committed them to.

Probably easier to just plan myself another self funded trip down under…need to get back before you’ve all hung up your riding boots and spend ALL day in the bakeries and coffee houses reminiscing about the good ol’ days.
lol!

Charlie has provided a good run down on our recently completed Southern Run for 2024 - great thanks to Bill for instigating this adventure each year.

I'll just add that I'm the crazy who did that road from Delegate to Orbost about 15 years ago (on my own) on my trusty green K1100LT when it was all gravel. On that trip when I came to the yellow warning sign that indicated twisty roads and 113km gravel road I thought someone had tampered with the sign and turned 13km into 113km - a long time later and with aching wrists and a fairing that sounded as if it had shaken itself to pieces I arrived in Orbost and was extremely pleased to see some flattish ground and could confirm to riding friends that it was indeed all gravel.

I've got a couple of more photos to add.

The public wharf at Mallacoota, which is I think the most eastern town in Victoria, looking out over the estuary with a little tour boat waiting for customers.
Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 Img_5610

The view out from our room at the hotel on the hill at Tathra on Sunday afternoon.
Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 Img_5612

and the same view on Monday morning as we were about to depart north into the traffic jam on the Kings Highway going up the mountain to Braidwood.
Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 Img_5611

May we all stay healthy enough to do many more of these great get togethers.

Cheers

Just have to add
Whilst at Orbost  i admired the great galxy of the milky way
And the constelation of the southern cross  ...a trully recognisable aussie thing ...so high in the sky...from where we normally see it up in the new england

I must say the southern cross has saved me more than once .. when lost in the dark ...out on shooting expiditions and the like ....far far away from any recogisable light sources

Trully appreciated and amazed .

Those bottles of Lagavulin aren't going to open themselves you know.

Lagavulin... hmmm. A bit too smoky for my taste. Now, the distillery eleven miles up the road has just started releasing its first batches of five- and eight- year old malts (distillery was only built ten years ago) and they are definately showing some promise! Currently drinking a five year old matured in madeira barrels. If the five year old is as good as this, I am damned impatient for their ten year old to be released! They do a good range but because of the young age of the distillery, for anything over eight years old the malts are bought in and blended in-house.

Now I knew straight away that eleventy miles up the road was not going to be on Islay and also knew that you would be talking about an Eyerish one as that's not a Scottish distillery that I have ever heard of.

Just because I am a long way away doesn't mean I don't know my geography.     Southern Ride 2024 - Page 2 447221

BAE has done Feis Isla and I am quite jealous of that fact!

And next time, I’ll do the whole Feis Isla week rather than just a couple of days! The Islay whisky’s are a bit of a scam though…nearly all the distilleries get their malt from the Port Ellen maltings ( Laphroig actually malt and smoke about 10% of their own but get 90% from Port Ellen). My favourite, Lagavulin, is distilled on Islay but then taken to the mainland for barrelling and aging.

Only 584 miles (and a ferry ride) awaySouthern Ride 2024 - Page 2 Img_3011
Dai is a lot closer…however, Tackler, I have no objection to flying 10,000 miles to Brisbane to help you drink your Lagavulin supply
lol! Very drunk

As I write I'm back in the state of Victoria, staying in Melbourne for a few days. Definitely hitting the budget harder than our little Southern jaunt!
Yarra Valley today, with a couple of wineries, and very overpriced cheesery and chocolatery. Chandon is overrated compared to its parent in France.

As always, roads and scenery were an added bonus to the company of friends, old and new. It's always in the background, but shows up strong when someone does things like bend the lower rear shock stud etc.

Thanks, everyone for your great company over the days of the ride. Trouble is, it's getting difficult to find new roads and venues.

Bill

Ah, Bairnsdale, me mum's place of birth, though she grew up mainly in nearby Lakes Entrance. As little ones, me and my brothers would get bundled into the split window Kombi and driven the many hours from Rosebud on the Mornington to that easternmost corner of Victoria. We'd spend long weekends under the stars, small campfires to stare into endlessly, sleeping in a walk-in canvas tent on cots or on the damp ground. Up in those hills toward Omeo we'd stay, deep in the forest along a creek full of fish, breakfast cooked in a large cast iron pan, raucous morning birds making sure we were awake.

Last time I was there, late 2008 on a return ride from the ferry from Tassie back to SE Queensland, I had time to find the headstones of my grands and grand uncles and aunties, overgrown and forgotten. Vivid memories of a time of wild freedom, innocence and of childhoods unhaunted.

Thanks Bill,

Can I put my name down now and reserve a pitch with a lake view?

Will we have the option of water skiing this time as well?

And will Smithy get drunk again and ask me the same question fifteen thousand times?
