OG, are you in or close to Portland? I did a stint at Portland Motorcycle Company from 2000 to 2004, the original owned by Dave Hillis on SE 82nd Avenue and then a coupla years under the new owners, the Pauls before they moved into their big new digs near the airport. They've got one of the bestest BMW parts guys anywhere in Jim Callaway and Steve Neilson, the Kiwi, is a salesman there still too, I believe. I did three months during the summer of '07 at the newer shop over in Tigard too. I like Stumptown. Good coffee and good beer. Bit wet and cold for my bones in Winter though. Cheers.

BTW, those engine covers look the biz!

Looking at getting an adjustable timing light so I can get the timing dialed back in once everything goes back in the engine. Anyone have experience with the harbor freight light?

Hey Guys,
What is suppose to mount in these? Seems like an ideal place to mount the headlight relays if they are open...
Thanks,

hiya og ..there is suposed ...or was at one time a gaitor around the fork legs which mounted to the fairing (like a big bladder thingy ) ...i remember seeing a pic one time ...but ive never seen them on a real bike .

i mounted my relays on a piece of metal and used the horn mounting bolt behind the left hand side pocket
cables that came from the fuse box etc are tied to the fairing mounts , using this tecnique there is no cable movement ....dont mount things with cables attached to moving parts mate.

This is where you mount the rubber boots (on a RT).
They keep the inside of the fairing dry, but at the same time they restrict the air flow. I replace mine, but the next time I will simply remove them.

85 RS restoration (part #1) - Page 4 Pictur18only did it yesterday og ....hang on ill go take one now

three relays used ...duplication for headlight ....and new one for accessory lamps ,,,mounted under fairing about below the horn vent holes

i really should use a bit more cable management on this ....but now i have 2 x nice big juicy 3mm copper diameter cable feeding the relays ... fuse protection before it leaves the relaybox ... the accesory lamps come on only when the parkers are switched on ...with an operate switch on/off in the dash rubber section

OG,
those 6mm threaded holes are used if the bike's got a 'C' fairing. It is where the fairing stays attach. The lower triple clamp is generic.

i really should use a bit more cable management on this
I buy these sockets for Bosh relays at Addison electronic for only $1.50 and they make a big difference for cable management. One of the nice feature is that they clip together and you can make a 'strip' of sockets if you need more than one.
Having a socket makes it easier when you need to replace the relay and prevents mixing up wires during the swap.

85 RS restoration (part #1) - Page 4 090135

For all my extra wiring and relays, I don't use fuses but circuit breakers like this one:

85 RS restoration (part #1) - Page 4 031058

By the way, I visit Addison electronic once a year, and the deals are so good that I always spend too much money there.

Yes it does. This is the reason why BMW discarded them on the later models.

thats cool bert .....they were asking over $7.00 a piece for the cradle ... ill get round to the extra cable ties in the first few inches away from the relays .
just above (not clear to see ) the cables follow the upper suport arm , and is quite neat
the smaller cables (7x 0.20 orange, white, black etc ) are basically signal cables from the switch and old headlight flange /socket so if it ever goes west ...just undo the headlight connection and slap in the old one .....for emergencies you understand

Hows the situation with the seller of the 'intake' cam shaking out?

Nocked myself a set of relays up on the weekend and soft fitted them to try. I GOT LIGHT!! Love Charlies work on the mounting. Gonna have me a look at that this weekend.

Thanks for inspiration..

OG, one of the BMW part numbers is 95 00 0 111 720 and the BMW tool set number is 11 1 720 - that's for the set, the individual tools are different. BMW made a part number change on a lot of their tools a coupla years back, so it could be something else now. But didn't CF post up a diagram of the tools so a bloke with a grinder and some initiative could have one homemade?

I don't remember the post, but I found the schematic:
Here it is. All the dimensions are in metric (The periods in the English system are commas in the French system).
