I picked up a damaged set of heated grips from Ebay. I see the wiring goes through the center of the grips, must go into the bars, where does it all come out? Or have I got it wrong?

Hi

Wiring should come out from a hole exactly in the middle of the handlebar, between the two handles. If you have a handlebar with endweigths the handlebar is specially designed for heated grips vs. no heated grips.

Hi club_c,
If your bars do not have a hole (between the handlebar clamps) then you will need to drill a hole or mill a slot for the wires. I had to do that when I bought my heated grips in the '80s.

So how do you fit heated grips in conjuction with bar end weights? I've often wondered.

Paul

Hi Paul.

You can get a retro-fit kit like this http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=0523&mospid=51708&btnr=32_1965&hg=32&fg=71 or you can buy a handle bar that is prepared for end-weights and heated grips...

So yesterday I wanted to begin the installation procedure on the factory heated grips. I looked at the wiring plugs and now am very confused. The wiring noted in the wiring diagram for heated grips seems to be only one multiplug with 2 wires on the bike's harness, and that is under the tank. The grips' electrical harness has a plug with 4 wires. The power switch multiplug has 3 wires. None of these match up to anything I can see. The switch harness and grips harness seems long enough to easily reach the fuse box but I don't see anything in the fuse box that would connect.

What am I missing? Do I have the wrong year of parts for the bike? ('85 K100RS)

Hi.

No wrong parts but probably some missing parts. As Inge´s drawing shows you probably need the 3-way connection between the wiringloom and the switch/grips. That is not standard-fitted on the RS wiring loom, but need to be retrofitted.

Thanks mates, that helps a lot. Now, if I make my own harness adapter, which wires connect to which wires??? I do have a bit of a plan, but not sure if I'm right...

All done. Ordered a used wiring pigtail that I was missing from kbikeparts and plugged it all together, works fine. Thanks to all for the advice and information. I should say that kbikeparts is excellent with the email communication, takes Paypal, and ships so fast. I ordered Saturday afternoon, and it arrived Monday morning in the mail. Recommended vendor.
