K1100 wireloom questions Img_6710Hi Team, question(s)  the purists and wisdom people here..

Making steadily progress with the ground up resto of my 93 K1100lt - see first image attached. Now ready to start putting back in the wire loom(s)

Have two questions there

1) while cleaning / checking the ‘lower’ part of the loom, I noticed a few of what looks like on purpose made pin holes (drain holes ?) in the wire sleeve going to the ignition control unit. Looks the 4 holes are in there with an offset from each other and potentially on the lowest point of the loom.

Is that correct, are they there intentionally?

(Or should I check if this is heat / age related and check the wires within)

2) besides the check/upgrade of the earth cables and putting in extra relay for headlight, should I do any other mods to electric system ?

Cheers, Y

Mmm. Brain brings forth a long-forgotten memory of seeing those holes before. I guess it is possible that they are a 'recall modification' because they are definately too rough to be ex-factory.

Any upgrades? Chuck a 50amp alternator in there if you can find one. That will give you the headroom for anything you want to add later (lights, heated clothing, etc.). Also I'd add a Hella charging socket on the top of the coil cover (does the K1100 already have one?). A USB socket up in the fairing would be a good idea too.

Thx Dai ! Good idea about the usb socket. I’m
Probably ok in winter time here, perth Australia, if anything I should look for portable aircon. Wink
But good idea about a 50a alternator., as extra light is definitely on the radar.
And I’ll need to check where the wires for the radio and speakers went…

As I just have changed my frame, I could inspect the loom and I can affirm that there were no such holes.

About the USB socket, beware: some are continuously pumping energy and will empty you battery in a few weeks.
Do not plug this socket directly on the battery, but on a wire powered after the main key contact.

Thx JBT, definitely would wire up the USB charger on a switched (ignition) line. (Likely adding a relay, that I might hav to put in for the radio anyway)

Still not completely sure about the holes in the wire sheeting - but will remove / open a little to check out the wires inside ..

Thx mate,
Y
