I was wondering why BMW used an 'all thread' stud, because, as Klompy says, a plain centre section does seem to be atractive.

Maybe this is the reason.

An 'all thread' stud has a constant root diameter, nom 10.2 mm. A stud with a plain section would have different diameters, ie, 10.2 root at the threads and 12 at the plain section. Now, any bending load on the 'all thread' stud would be spread along the whole stud, but on the variable diameter stud the load would be concentrated at the change of section. So perhaps the 'all thread' is less likely to fail?

Does that sound logical?

Paul.

Yes that does make sense Paul but the big mystery is why the hell did they make it out of mild steel, it's not like a higher tensile is that much more in cost and to be quite honest I consider it to be one of the poorest pieces of engineering I have ever seen on a motor vehicle. I made a stud from a piece of well used jack hammer shaft that was 3/4 hex and left a section of 3mm of the hex so that the stud could be tightened into the housing and loctited before the shock eye was put on the stud and used a swivel eye on the lower eye so it would enhanse the strength and not even let the stud flex. Having a rubber eye lets it flex.

Just to confuse matters....studs were sent off via Australia Post yesterday to those in Australia who ordered them. This means that they may or may not arrive sometime this or next year. The studs have a concrete guarantee that is once they have left the concrete of my garage...there is no guarantee!,

Mine arrived today also.
Special Klompy delivery.
I did order 2 as I was going to put one on each bike (I have 2 bikes you know Studs, who wants a stud? - Page 2 25650 ), but I will forward one onto any other member who was slow off the mark (Alby).
And stickers. Does it get any better than this?

Thank you Mr Stan. Really appreciated.

There is so much excitement about OZ studs. I would pay the shipping and fair market value for one, just to carry it as a talisman on my keychain . If there is one magical stud left I would take it. But don't feel obligated to part with your spare. I can wait for the next run.

You people! When I removed my 30 year old stud from my naked k, the stud had already had a bend in it. I don't know how long it would have been before it gave way. The new high tensile stud will not sag or bend.....it may snap in extreme circumstances.

went to Bunnings and bought some nice M12 nuts with which to "double nut my stud" so should have it changed out in no time....of course some "stud lock" will be used on installation.

I was told that you may not need anything to "glue" it in. However a "wave" washer will be needed before the final nut. You may find out that nut will not want to screw on the stud beyond about a mm. The new studs may be a "tad" longer than the old...because of machining of both ends......make them look and feel nice.

Hey Klompy just be careful about those Bunnings nuts, make sure that they are grade 8.8 or above.
Hate to see them fail, although they aren't actually under as much load as the stud.
What a great result this is though, its whats great about this forum.

Due to circumstances beyond my control and thanks to a very generous forum member (SCP) I feel I no longer have a burning need to change out my stud.
I did ask Ainsjac for 2 as I was going to put one in the new bike. That is still to be decided.
Regardless I have a spare stud.
The cost is one beer.
Redeemable by Ainsjac.
He was generous enough to have them made and paid the postage so I will pay the postage to forward it on to anywhere IN THE WORLD affraid

send me a pm in case I miss it in this thread.

That's the way I do it, but I was advised not to use loctite as the stud would be "locked' by the outside nut.

Klomp....take one piece of wire, place it parallel to stud.
Bend said wire 93 degrees at point where wire is equal to the end of sticky outty bit of stud.
You now have reference guide.
Measure against new stud as you screw it in.
When the length of the new stud equals the length of wire up to the 93 degree bend..stop screwing.
Revert the wire to 180 degrees after task is finished and place it on work bench so it can get lost, or put it in a safe place.

If you use number 8 fencing wire....place it under your bike seat....it may come in handy when you break a stud.

I've never had one out, but doesn't the stud bottom out in the threaded hole?
Paul.

Klomp....what if the stud is in metric, but you have an imperial ruler. Don't forget the old saying which may not translate to metric....give a woman an inch and she thinks she is a ruler.

Best thing is to take a copy of my stud support made by the wonderful SCP.
Surely a handy fella such as yourself could knock up a copy.

I need to put new studs in my Ks so I will buy a few bars and cut them up into slightly longer than standard to fit Paul's thingy and I owe Blakey a new stud. I will try to have some at Nindygully, someone is bound to need shutup you fool before you put the mocka on someone.

Can I add something here please.

The mild steel studding is designed to bend in the hope it gets noticed also it doesn't break immediately as high tensile does.
I can assure you that BMW know what they are doing when it comes to metallurgy.

The OEM studs are mild steel and I have never seen one bent but have seen several broken.
It seems to be a problem that has cropped up in Australia (I have heard of one in US) probably because of our crap roads.
Also BMW may know lots about metallurgy but as with every vehicle manufacturer they do make mistakes.
I will be replacing that stud at regular intervals with 12mm 8.8. grade. Probably at each spline lube.

oui !   you could be right paul    bounce  Studs, who wants a stud? - Page 2 723598

I believe your solution to putting a outrigger brace (to the bevel box from the bolt end  ) is going to more than double the resistance to the flex between the outer and the inner load bearing length of the fixing and thus reducing the implied off axis sheer force versus length force algorithm

many of our shocks have a ball mount coupling in both ends which would allow transfer of forces along the length of the fixing to complicate the sheer effect to a leveraging effect -  the top mount supported both sides does not seem to ever suffer from this phenomenon . ever !!!  likewise your solution could be a long term winner for us mortal riders ....eh ?

I have a couple of lengths of 12mm 8.8. rod and will be cutting it up shortly and making quite a few I will make them about 3mm longer than original because some shockies require a washer against the drive as well as behind the nut.
Paul does your plate require any extra length or would it be beneficial at all?  Also if you have access to a paralever setup would you have a look and see if you can come up with a an easy solution for them as they don't have the flat surface directly below the nut and anybody is welcome to throw an idea or three around.  I have been racking my brain for an easy solution but it seems to go into warp speed x 0 whenever I think about it.
For the Aussies I will have them at Nindigully and will want $2 each just to cover my costs.
Anyone else, postage on top but it still makes a cheap stud.  Don't let your wife know about studs for this price or you'll never see them again. Laughing

Hey Rick,

Could you put a couple aside for me please?

We could add them to the mix when we exchange the top box for beer.   Studs, who wants a stud? - Page 2 22936
