Just a short progress update:
Smithy has been invaluable help with this, with his skills and thinking.
Thanks also to the others, Charlie, RossKo, Blakey, TWB, Klompy...Ed...the list goes on and this list is amazing.

This is the main culprit....looks innocent enough but obviously is worth a few broken ribs etc.
Crash, Bang, Tinkle. Sam_3910

Crash, Bang, Tinkle. Sam_3810

This piece is from the front mounting arm: It was the subject of a roadside repair last year during the long tour. A piece was welded in to further strengthen it. I believe this broke this time as a result of impact, not fatigue.
( Note the weld didn't go all the way around)

Crash, Bang, Tinkle. Sam_3911
Crash, Bang, Tinkle. Sean_s10

We are working under the premise that less flex is better and so more bracing will be employed. I spoke to a few people about this and although it remains a bit of a black art, rigidity seems to be a good thing.
Crash, Bang, Tinkle. Sean_s11

Right then...best get back to the shed. Smile

looking good Sean , good to hear the apprentice is working well.

not sure if I'm right here ,but the area of concern for this worry wart is that you still have a frame that will flex .
couldn't get my drawings to work , but to best describe it is , as you look at your frame in the pic draw an imaginary line from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock  ,
the front foremost weld on the bend , and the weld halfway along the inner side ( nearest the Gearshift) create a weak point .
,this area with sufficient force this will bend .
this could be the origins of the previous break at the front, too much flex .
my thoughts would be to strengthen the front weld with additional tubing inside the existing tube to overlap all new welds.
and because the frame along the inner side nearest the bike is formed in two pieces , brace it with a piece of C section,
overlapping each side of the weld by a good 8"( 200mm).
just thinking..

top job by all.

Cool

Nice work Sean, The thing with stress & fatigue in metal is it moves brace one peice and the point moves to the end of the brace its like when something is welded up usualy its not the weld but the material next to it that breaks, Just me babling on keep up the good work.

Wow, you would want to make sure everything was working perfectly before you bolted that beast back together.

Ah you see you don't have the radiator overflow bottle in the original position, you can put it somewhere that only takes 4 hours to check and then it would be as easy to work on as a Ferrari
