I would like to repaint the black muffler heat shield, valve covers, handle bars and a couple other area on my 87 K100LT and I'm wondering what would be the best Rustoleum rattle can paint for this. I've read Rustoleum Canyon Satin Black is a good match but I'm wondering how it will hold up to heat from the motor and muffler. 

What have you guys found to be the best for doing this kind of job?

I've used it on both the engine covers and the muffler heat shield and it hasn't had any problems. I did look at powder coating or two pack but paint is cheaper. It has the added advantage of being able to be easily touched up if it suffers damage.

I used flat black grill paint on my heat shield 5 years ago and still holding, although the bike is kept indoors.

I received an e-mail from Rustoleum today saying the Canyon Satin Black paint will withstand temps up tp 200 degrees and that they don't recommend using it on the motor or exhaust.

Because I have a new waterpump that is painted black which looks like a satin simi gloss black I'd like to find something that is a close match if not a perfect match.
Rustoleum doesn't have a hi temp black that is satin.

It would be interesting to see how hot the motor, valve covers and heat shield actually get in normal use.
I may try the hi temp flat black and see what it looks like.

Give this stuff a try. POR15 makes some of the best consumer paints for tough conditions. Popular with car restorers. It might be a little shinier than the OEM paint, but you might be able to get flattening agent from a paint shop to knock the gloss down. The web site can tell you where to get it.

As far as temperature, the valve and crank covers on my engines don't get much hotter than about 200F. I can't ever recall the heat shield on the muffler getting too hot to touch(isn't that the purpose of a heat shield?).

POR15 is not a bad idea, I've used it on a few projects.
I was thinking if there is a 185 degree thermostat on the bike it would not run much hotter than that under normal riding conditions. Does that sound reasonable?

That's about right. I have a ChiCom infrared thermometer and the cases on my engines usually never get much hotter than 175F(they usually run around 150). The temperature can get pretty hot around the headers, but as long as the fan works, the cases stay under 200F even when I am letting it idle when I balance throttle bodies.

I was just on the POR15 website and I see they have a Top Coat Chassis Black that they label as having a satin sheen. That could be what I need.

I would want something that you can spray on, might be hard to put the por15 on with no brush strokes.

I've used the brush on POR15 before and that stuff is amazing, it washes out and lays flat and looks like glass.

The chassis black in the rattle can should be just the ticket.  I used it on the rear frame loop on one of my bikes, and it was just a little less glossy than the OEM frame paint.  

YankeeOne, POR paint is very high quality.  Don't compare it to the crap they sell in the hardware store. The stuff is tough as nails and flows out very nicely.  If you follow their directions the results are amazing.  I have a cast iron keel on my sailboat and it was a pain in the ass because of rust no matter what I did until I put the POR stuff on it 12 years ago.

I still vote for Rustoleum , I have used it fairly extensively on various BMWs most recently my 1980 R80, I painted the crash bars ,and valve covers from bare metal with excellent results, Availability and cost(no shipping) swing the pendulum in my mind.
I will give Eastwood products a plus on their spray tips though.
