This is my newly-acquired 1989 K100.
It looks pretty standard.
The odometer reading is stalled, so I don't know the actual mileage done.
Does anyone know if the luggage is a BMW option, or aftermarket?

Panniers are OEM; topbox looks like Givi or a Givi-type knockoff.

Looks nice.  (The rear brake disk is aftermarket.)

Odometer failure is usually caused by plastic gears breaking. You can fix that by replacing the gears.

Looks great. It appears to be a little bit of a mix of parts. It has an early one-piece front fender and forks. Didn't the '89s have the 4 valve head? That looks to be a pre-89 2-valve.

According to the US firm MaxBMW, the K100RS was produced until '89—at lease as imported to the USA—which could mean any RS 2V manufactured from the summer of '88 onward was tagged as an '89; otherwise, the '89 status could possibly be a quirk of the Ozian vehicle registration system. bounce It's a nice looking specimen regardless of its age.  cheers

Wasn't the drilled rear disc subject to recall due to cracking with subsequent rear discs un-drilled?  

Series one panniers and keys are like hen's teeth.  

Givi style top box as Dai says.  The duck tail mounting points are also used for the the standard rack and top box.  

By its age then that would be very early ABS.  It still has the yellow decal on the front fork.  Y spoke wheels prior to the three spoke jobbies.  

The speedo gears can be replaced by Lionel Otto Instruments here in Brisbane and it will cost you 200 Pacific Pesos otherwise you can do it yourself.  

Apart from the scratch marks on the fairing edge, overall that is a well looked after KRS.

Type 1 key story:

For whatever reason, my parents were packrats with keys and had a box of every key they'd ever had including keys for luggage and briefcases. After seeing people refer to the Type 1 keys/locks as Samsonite one day I tried a bunch of my parents' old keys and sure enough I found one that worked in the set of Type 1 cases I had at the time. Once I had one that worked I took it to a locksmith and they found a key that was similar enough so that it could be cut down and copied to make a copy of that key.

Also sometimes you can find old stock or used keys. The key number for each lock is stamped into the side of the lock when opened:

I can't make out clearly from ther photo, if the rear disk is slotted like the front one it was recalled and replaced by a solid disk. The slotted ones crack. I had one on my RS and it cracked but I knew this was a risk. However it was sudden and it distorted at the same time. If your rear disc is drilled as opposed to slotted it will be ok.

Panniers and pannier rails are all original kit.

The top box is not an oem one but the rack under is is quite common, I have some of them here. If you want oem you need the original rack, the mounting plate and the top box. The oem box is a 20 litre ornament.

My 92 K100LT has the two piece front fender, it seems to have come with the LT from 88 when the ABS also came on line. The earlier RT up to 88 did not have the fork bridge that necessitates the two piece fender.

Watch the pannier hinges, they break and the lids fall off. Easy to replace the hinges, you need 4. Always make sure the panniers are locked on properly, if they are not locked they will fall off.

Last one, centre stands break due to corrosion on the inside. I have swapped all mine out to 16v stand assemblies, either K100 or K1100.

Mirrors can and do fall off, put tethers on them to stop them landing on the ground. Expensive to replace.

I moved this over to K Bike Pictures because, well, you have already done the requisite Member's Intro post.

That bike is rather a typical OZ bitsa - options from early and later models put together - in that it has the early, one-piece front mudguard, is an 8 valve but not a blue/white RS, which came first along with the K1, with the original ABS.

Thanks Martin, I'll try that. Is there a specific gear set to buy? I ordered a "58 piece mixed gears" that look similar to those in Dan's instructions.

The crash pad where the ignition switch resides is also not an RS style and it appears to have "C" bars, too.

That.s what I have on my Sprint, C bars and K75/100RT/K100LT ignition pad.

Its a good riding position.

But I had intended doing this conversion on my RS since I got it, never did it and won't be doing it now.

The C bars use different throttle cable and front brake hos, not sure if they use the longer or shorter clutch cable.

 I like it but I don’t know any different. I have sat on one other RS and I found the bars too narrow for my liking. My bike came with C bars.


The C bars use different throttle cable and front brake hos, not sure if they use the longer or shorter clutch cable.

 I replaced all my brake hoses with Spiegler stainless steel ones and I did have to add several mm’s to the length of the top one. I can’t remember exactly how much it was, though.

 It does use the longer clutch cable, and while I haven’t replaced the throttle cable, will get the longer one when needed.
