ahh, nice work mate. I think that is going to take something different. I'll send a pic to Tracey at autoillumination once I get mine out. No wonder the output is so poor on the gauges. Looks like a flashlight made for a small mouse, lol.

Hey guys,

A little off topic. Buddy just got a 79' R100. How much different is the valve adjust, ignition timing and carb sync than ours? I want to help him out a bit and he has very little experience with the old BMW's.

THanks!

OG

1979 & 1980 only have points and condensor "in a can", easy to adjust, but fiddly to get at. Valve adjustment is by screw and feeler gauge. Be sure to re-torque the heads and take note of any 'tightness' in the exhaust valves setting, especially - valve seat recession, a common ailment in those years unless it's had the unleaded conversion done, meantime. Bing CV carb sync is basic, easy, but best done using Carbstix or vacuum gauges to get it right.

Head torque is 25 ft/lbs increased to 28.5 ft/lbs, be sure to have a squish of oil at the rocker arm's endplay. These are not shimmed like the later models, unless they've been updated ala 1985 on models.
Intake valves are .10mm (.004") and exhaust are .20mm (.008") Don't pay any attention to anyone telling you to set the exhaust side to .006"!
Idle is +/-900 rpm
Ignition timing is the 'S' mark on the flywheel at idle using a strobe, then a large dot appears at full advance...2600 rpm, I reckon's good..
Carbies are easy but best done with a syncro tool to keep good balance on an opposed engine. Leave a smidge of freeplay on both choke and throttle cables. Adjust only one side throttle cable to get level air 'pull' at revs.

There are tricks but it's pretty basic stuff. Enjoy!

Too easy.

Yep, early model with the old Ate calipers and likely 'points in a can', like a distributor under the front timing cover....remove the earth strap before you pull that cover!!! The diode board doesn't like shorts! Simple stuff, mate. Have fun.

TWB's advice about removing the earth strap is important removing the can covering will often short out the diode board if you don't. Lots of advice on the net about fixing the R100's

I'm sure most of you guys already know about this stuff. It is like the DeOxit gold of surface film protectors for rubber vinyl and plastic, and I've been using it on my old Flea-Bay fairing bits and pieces with much satisfaction. Also, the above original control switch on the left has been treated with it and the right one is a brand new unit from Motobins.

Think I found another cause of the weeping valve cover along with the cracked rubber donuts. The gasket channels in the valve cover were just a mess with baked on junk and black goo and the gasket wouldn't lie flat. After some acetone, utility knife work and some Q-tip madness hopefully it will be drip free.

That's where a crafty use of the dishwasher on a hot cycle comes in whilst SWMBO is out for an hour or so it makes a good job of cleaning up parts. Best to whack some crockery in there afterwards though and set it running to allay any suspicions. That way when she comes back you get a gold star for running the dishwasher and super clean parts.

just got back from the dealer and wanted to pass along a little info. Apparently all the newly designed seals are dry fit and no longer require the soaking in an oil bath prior to installation. Took a pic of the timing cover seals with the new one on the right.

Oldgoat, once again, stunning pictures and explanations on what you are doing.. and often why. I'm sure it gives a lot of us ideas..!!!
Well done as usual.

On the relay box, after recently doing the "deoxit" treatment, I have wondered what the other plugs were for in the box. One looks very similar to my fuel tank plug?
