looks about right for any head with lots of miles

a little valve grind and replace the valve stem seals ...clean up the intake rubbers and reseal them ...probably rings as well

+ a clean out of the carbon ....dont forget to do the intake and outlet ports ...there is a long held theory that about 400 grade polishing of the ports is the best option and get rid of casting flaws for better flow

the new head gasket should solve the rest .

Sounds about right to me Charlie... I am just debating whether to strip the top end down before putting it into the soda blaster.... or put it in whole....

I know i am going to have to take the valves out so i can clean them properly and reseat them!

Not to sure about the rings as looking up from the bottom into the back end of the cylinders it all looks good and nice and clean no sign of anything blowing...

I have got the new head gasket ready here so all is good in that respect Very Happy

Pondering on the idea of taking both halves to an engineering workshop for them to dip them in a bath to chemically clean both halves....

Rick G wrote:Check that head for flat because the #3 combustion chamber had had a bit of water into it by the look of the valve heads and the piston crown.

The water that had got into Cylinder 3 was my fault when i set about the bike with the jet wash.... I hadn't secured the spark plug in properly hence it allowed water in.

Having been able to inspect things a bit closer I am not to worried about the state of it... It looks like cylinder 1 and 2 have a large build up of crap that would explain the staining i have on the outside of the spark plugs.

The head is now minus it's valves... all bagged up and ready for cleaning... If anyone else needs to remove their's i would reccomend this style tool.

1988 K100 LT Rebuild... - Page 2 04021110

It's far easier to use than the ones that have a compression handle.

All ready for a spot of soda blasting action tomorrow....

The 12 rivet shaft was first introduced on the 4V models (-89),
and then used on all other models shortly after this.

Today I have mainly been cleaning... I used the soda blaster to shift the majority of the crap, which took off most of the gasket, a few stubbon bits needed the assistance of a razor blade, and then back into the soda blaster to finish it off... Not as clean as getting it chemically cleaned mind... so that may still be an option.
I am thinking a chemical bath would be best for the bottom end as it would save me having to remove the pistons... Unless anyone thinks i am mad for doing it that way???

I have still got to remove the oil seals, has anyone got any tips?
I also still need to clean the valves, I tried one i/p and one exhaust valve in the soda blaster... The I/P cleaned up ok but the Exhaust is still well baked... best option to use oven cleaner on them?

I Use Oven Pride essentially you pour it into a bag and then place the part inside..... and then allow it to kick arse!

Think i will get 8 bags and split it between them and just allow it to do it's job.... all the time not mixing up the parts!

The Exhaust ports have definitly never recieved any port flowing hehe.... yet! Wink I think being very carefull with the dremel would do the trick.....

I wasn't sure if they would come out without a tool for the job, I will pop out tomorrow and get one i think. Be good to get the old seals out... Should have ordered new one's from motobins yesterday as i would have had them tomorrow and would have been able to get the bits all back in place (less likely to get mixed up then!)

Thanks Halo... I wasn't great at sorting photo's as i took the bike apart.... But am doing my best to record everything as it go's back together and as i work on each of the parts...

Tomorrow i will look at decoking the Piston Heads.... without having to strip the bottom end right down.... I am thinking about putting the whole thing into the Soda blaster as there is room, and then attacking it in there....

I am away on a course after the weekend and am going to be away for a week... so would like when i get back to be able to fit the new stem seals and get the engine put back together again.....

Little update for the day.... Have soda blasted the main block and it's not come up to bad... I have taken it to have one of the engine studs arc eroded as it snapped when i took it off! never mind these things happen.

I have also moved the frame into the garage so I can think about adding more to it and progressing the build along.

Ok, I haven't had a chance to do a lot since my last post, But took 10
mins out to drop into my local recovering shop... and had a chat with
them about recovering my seat.... I have now cleaned up the old one and
have dropped it off with them.... Am really looking forward to getting

looks like i have been really quiet on the updating side....

Well So far I have got the bike all cleaned and painted... and pretty much back together.... managed to burn out the starter motor.... oops all my own fault and I know i shouldn't have been pressing the start button for soooo long...

When i went back over to see whats occurring with the fueling side I discovered that one of my injectors wasn't working, so have bought 3 off of eBay, with any luck i should have a couple of working ones there for spares as well...

Below is how the bike is looking... I have prepped ready to spray the last few bits, just waiting for a dry day...

Thanks Blakey,

I need to wheel her out of the garage again so I can finish spraying the parts, so weather depending will take some more shots Very Happy going to be spraying the fuel cap as well so need to cover the hole temporarily... I have got a new fuel pump in the bike and want to keep it immersed in fuel this time lol!!!!

Well final day of spraying bits black today, in work over the weekend so not going to have a chance to fit them... Come monday morning all the bits will be fitted to the bike, including the new Goodridge brake hose's to the rear. so i will be able to have some sort of brakes on the bike now Very Happy

List of things left to do....

Fit new front brake hose's when they arrive...
Fit new starter motor when it arrives....
sort out the injector that's not working... resistance reading is good, but its not allowing fuel to pass through... 3 replacements on there way as well just incase... and hopefully a few spare...
Get the engine to fire....
Get her back on the road in her new Colours.

Ok I have been quiet for a while been tied up with work and a couple of problems... well following struggling to get the K running smooth, I did a compression test with Cylinder 4 at 0psi.... and 3 at 90 odd.... injected some oil and 3 went to 120, and 4 increased by a huge margin.
So strip of the engine was needed I took out all 4 pistons and replaced all of the piston rings. cyl 1,3 and 4 now showing 150psi and 2 is 140psi. I have got to say it was a pita getting the pistons back in with the rings particularly the middle ring which on most attempts of compressing them decided it wanted to rotate round and not stay with the pin.... I hope that the 10 psi missing on cyl 2 isn't caused by another ring problem.
I took the opportunity to also replace the timing chain. She is sounding so much quieter now which is good.

The only issue I am left with is pinking at higher revs and a high idle... which I am guessing is a timing issue...

The above 2 photo's were mid way cleaning the bike! I had used her a couple for a couple of trips to work which probably caused more problems with the piston rings!

She was also being a PITA to start, which isn't a surprise with the lack of compression so took the opportunity to replace the HT leads as well nice set from RAM engineering in the UK great fit and along with new spark plugs she started within a second of pressing the go button..

The valves were all good and all sitting perfectly I took the time to check the clearances with the head on the bench and all were bang on identical which is good. (well the inlets were all 0.25 and the outlets were all 0.15.)

Am I right in thinking it's probably the timing thats just out at the moment for the pinking at higher revs and the high idle?

I have now got that as my desktop screen! looking at it I wished it had stopped raining when I had finished washing the bike as the final image would have been far better!

Hi twincarb,

If you want to check the timing I have the BMW tools to do the job.

For a photo of the kit, have a look at post 1 in: http://k100rt.aforumfree.com/t3804-checking-the-timing-of-a-k100?highlight=ignition+timing

Although I hold the BMW tools for the BMW Club UK, I also have a lot of them myself. For the price of the postage you can borrow the timing tools.

Hope this helps

Mike
