Replaced the engine cover rubbers while I was re-doing the cam chain cover seal. Also, replaced the wiring to the pump sensors and installed the updated temp switch. Used the modified Advil bottle to guide the seal on and also made certain everything was pristine and bone dry. After a quick test ride still no joy with a small bit of oil weeping. Does anyone know if you can just clean up the new PTFE seals and try again or do you have to replace it and start over?

Can't answer that question for you OG. All I can do is admire the work! I really love the colour of your bike and the matcing rear spring sets it off beatifully. The finish on the engine covers is neat too. You have inspired many through your efforts and posts.

Did you oil the lip of the seal before you installed it. If dry they can burn before oil gets to them.

bummer with the weep, bike looks awesome, I cant remember if I took a bit of clean oil and wiped it on the surface of the crank first, the lip is defiantly facing in?

OG I put the timing cover on first , then put in the seal, dont know if that would make a deference or not.

Hey Rick the new seals are PTFE, ie Teflon, and my understanding is they have to be installed dry or they will leak. I'm going to talk with Jim out at the Tigard dealer when I can get the time later this week...

I debated about putting the seal in first Yankee and for the life of me I couldn't see an advantage either way as the modified plastic bottle guides the seal on perfectly and yep had the seal facing inwards... Anyway, I let you guys know what I discover with some more info and another attempt.

Hey guys. Having a HD problem and lost access to my manuals. Can someone tell me the torque rating for the bolts that hold the two brake caliper halves together?

cant find the listing in either the haynes or bmw manuals og ..

they talk about everything else ...but neither go into the separation of the halves mate

the mounts torgue is about 32 though ...i would be guessing a little more for the halves ...40 - 60 something ?

Drove around a good bit this morning so it will be interesting to see if that's the case mate. Hopefully, I'll have a bit of time over the weekend to take another look and do some more work on her. I did chat with Brian aka yankeeone, he's the great mate who sent me the modified pill bottle to do it right, and he said he did go ahead and use a bit of oil on installation and he was successful so I may have to get another seal and hopefully third attempt will be the charm!?

Thanks Mates! It's just an old Corbin Daz. Bought it off Flea-bay from a guy who picks up old bike seats and just recovers them. He doesn't have a steam fitter so the shape isn't perfect, but certainly good enough until I can get my solo finished...

Just got back from a decent ride on lunch break where I was able to heat her up a bit. Still leaking off the front so the timing cover is gonna have to come off again and another attempt made with that pesky seal is in the cards... Rear caliper is now dry after having to be rebuilt do to weeping. Swing arm and shock are sorted and the rear end now feels very good. I'm thinking I might need to take some of the dyna beeds out of the front tire as I've got 2oz in now and most are running 1oz in our size fronts and it feels a bit wobbly until they spool up.

Got to say OG you have inspired me! If i get my bike looking half as good as yours I am going to be happy.....

Mind you I am now the owner of a bottle of 303 sun factor 40.... had a quick spray on the K and the bits i have attacked it with are looking amazing.... So I had to wash and clean the Thundercat properly and then used the stuff on there

G'day OG , I've got a BMW tank bag as well , I attached a lamb skin under mine to stop it from chaffing the tank paint , it is held on with 2 inch square pieces of velcro .

Many hardware stores here stock it, even our £1 shops sometimes have it.

You may find it in caravan or motorhome stores, they use it in drawers and cupboards to stop things floating around when on the move.

A question or two. How did you clean/clear/prep things like the foot peg side plates?. I have the same bike. Alot of the surfaces look stained/discolored/aluminum powdered. I'm not sure how I want to tackle the job. Like the foot pegs, it looks like they're steel, (rust) I figure I can get the rubber off and hopefully find new rubber. But I'm not sure how to treat them, clear coat? Since they look silver? The side plates that they tie into are a different story they look like aluminum. I don't want to change the surface I just want to bring it back.

I'd appreciate any words of wisdom.

Hey Rick,
Welcome to the board. I ended up taking mine apart and blasting them with soda. I refinished with the Eastwood Diamond clear in Satin. No primer just cleaned up with paint prep and shot two coats following the directions. It was a bit glossier than I would like in an ideal world, but near enough to stock that I wasn't bothered. If yours are in fairly decent shape you forgo the blasting and just clean them up with some Bon Ami mixed with water and lemon juice or mixed in with the metal wash, and use a nylon brush attachment for a standard 3/8" drill. For the fasteners I used the fast etch and was very happy with the results. Be advised that with some bits it will turn a silvery grey so test a bit first if this is a concern.
