We had a chat about rims etc before, Col. Would be interested to hear what you've done and where you got the bits etc,

Jeez you had better add a stereo to the chair its got the slot for it all ready and waiting. Question would a k75 drum rear 18" suit the chair or jack it up too high????? or is the plan to go car tyres on the back as well?

The rim on my chair is an old 18" from a TX500 Yamaha. Made of steel....weighs approximately 3.4tonnes.

What you gonna do with the old ( dusting -like) boat?
I have found that using a car rim on the rear makes a huge difference to both the handling and also my bank balance. I just couldn't afford to buy a new rear tyre every 3,000km. That's all I was getting. The only gripe I have with it is that it is extremely difficult to get the thing on after removal for things like changing the final drive etc. Because the 4 mounting bolts are recessed into the car rim, there is not a lot of room and you have to use a " specially modified" 17mm ring spanner and can only do about a 1 inch increment each time.( Unless you want to remove the Zorst system every time) Because the rim fits flush onto the final drive and there are no locating dowels and there is also that spacer...it is bloody awkward to fit it without an offside. It has sometimes taken me hours!
I use a dab of grease to hold the spacer on, but it's still ridiculous.

Sean.

it was based on a dusting, a mate of mine built it in the late 80s i used for a while till i got my dusting
3000ks sounds about right that's why i am thinking car rims
father in law has returned from grey nomading we are working out whether to use djp chassis or manufacture one ourselves
if dont end up using it open to all ideas
i know you just had rear wheel off but if you remember next time if you could snap a pic or two of your spacer and a couple measurements i will give me an idea of what i have to make up to fit car rim i think it will have to made to suit whatever rim i decide to usebecause of offset
thinking of using a 15x 51/2 rim with tyre to match same rolling diameter of standard bike Tyre
180 or 190x 85

Sean Been looking at a few of the past threads and that rim on your bike is off a Mazda I think, late 60s

Col I dont think you would go anywhere close to getting a 180 tyre in there and have it within a bulls roar of centre.
What I would look at doing is get a 15" wheel about 5" wide then get an engineering shop to move the centre of the wheel so it is closer to the centre of the rim.
That way you wont have the big ofset and deep hole to put the bolts and it will be easier to get on and off.

A Mazda eh! In my mind I just thought 80's generic Jap rim.
Here is a photo of the adaptor I took the other day which gives you an idea of the offset. Excuse the dust as I had been riding on dirt roads.

i have an idea Sam_0517

The spacer is the stock rear wheel spacer. The tyre I am using is a 165. That's about as wide as you'd want, I think.

i had sorter guessed that setting up the rear rim would be a head #$%&
there is a mob in south oz that makes wheels thinking i will ask them if they can do something for me with new rims possible might be able to get it drilled to suit final drive
might work out cheaper than enginerring shop
i thoght saxon was using 180
or 190 but i see he using 165

One wheel that may be worth looking at is some of the 318 BMW wheels. they have a very small dia bolt patern and may have enough to get it drilled with a smaller dia circle. Problem there is getting one narrow enough as they tend to be 6 and 7" rims but some of the late 70 and 80 may do it. I am thinking mags for weight.
One guy I know in Sydney uses the cragar wheels that they use for front runners on the funny cars.

I do know some guys with FJR 1300 Yamahas that run a 165 x 17 car tyre to get good miles when towing a trailer. You can get 17" rims on some K1200 with the same 4 stud as the K100 but they went to 5 stud with the K1300 and R1150 I think. you might get one that just bolts on.

I'm using a 145 x 15 rear and I've just checked the receipt on which I had written the mileage when fitted; it's now done 13,200 miles and will probably go to at least 14.

15" rims seem to be the smallest that will clear the rear disc caliper. The K1200 17" rim will take a 165 car tyre but without a Paralever swing arm there isn't enough clearance without a spacer........and a spacer puts a greater load on the final drive bearings.

There are differences between bike and car rims.........15" bike rims are 2.86mm bigger in dia than car rims, but, in practice I know many sidecarists who mix tyres and rims without problems. If such things worry you, then stick to car rims and tyres or bike rims and tyres.

16" car and bike rims are within .25mm.

17" and 18" bike rims are 2.77mm smaller than the equivalent car rims.

Having the wheels in line is not particularly necessary on an outfit.

Good luck col, theres a lot to think about at this stage,

Cheers, Paul.

spent some of the day looking for rims
the wheel manufactures not interested
have one choice of tyre size 165 80 15
the local wrecker reckons he has a couple of 15x5.5 steel rims i think i will grab them and go from there to start with
it will end up being about 20mm smaller than standard bike rim and tyre
been playing with cardboard boxes should have model of body finished tomorrow

Its a nice shape and very good work but it would be very heavy. I would say around 300+lb as it sits and with lots more to go.
I would be inclined to use a technique that is used in building boats. You use thin strips of very thin ply and epoxy it together in a criss cross pattern.
Many a home built boat has sailed the world with that system, it is very strong.
One big advantage is that you build it a bit at a time you dont have one big fibreglassing effort.

Mine is merely made from sheets of Gal and riveted together.

i have an idea P2070010

It has the advantage of being quite light weight. You can carry it about by hand without any trouble. This lessens the strain on the bike and drive train which is something I am conscious of. Still...it all depends on what you are going to use the chair for...mine is just for luggage, the dog sometimes and to hold me up at traffic lights.

i have an idea P2070011

The "fuselage" is attached to the frame by 3 old Toyota engine mounts, which dampen some of the vibes and is also easy to remove. I sealed all the joints with silicon sealant and painted the inside with dampener from a rattle can. Put some old off cuts of carpet and glued them in...the windshield is made from 2.5mm plexiglass...the 5mm stuff just kept cracking at the drill holes.

I'm sure there are technically better ways of doing everything...but I'm no engineer and as said, its just to keep me riding long after I would have had to give up riding a large bike solo. As someone's avatar says...Blakey I think...in the end it's better to be riding anything than no bike at all...or words to that effect.

Yeah the first question is, what is it used for? The one in the link is very well made but from the looks it is from 1.2mm or 1.6mm steel to be able to get seam welds that good makes it heavy.

I just started to experiment with a wheelbarrow.
Yes I know, it will only be a summer chair, but I am a fan of open concept.
Very Happy

This is just a concept at this stage. We need to align the steering a little and have swivel joints instead of a pipe and wire. I believe this idea will take off.

This is the economy model, the poverty pack.....one wheel drive, less weight on the side bike. For US and Europe yuo don't have to have too much change, just swap fuel tank and seat.

Let get serious....

Your design is a good start and I like it.

This reminds me the GEP sidecar that I own in 1977.
I can see that you shape the back of the chair to match the line of the rear mud guard of the K100, but the GEP had a nice trunk capacity for a small chair. The back was angled in the opposite way.
The angle of the front face may pose problems for somebody with big legs and feet. Reversing the angle of the front could create a nice foot rest for the passenger.
I think the front should be a little bit higher. (consider a passenger with size 10 or 11 feet).

TIP: take a picture of you sitting on a seat similar to the one you are planing to install, and draw the basic shape of the chair around your body. You want your passenger to be able to move its legs and feet. You cannot expect to have someone cramped in one position for hundreds of kilometers.
Something like this:

Col, you would have to get a matching pair....2 RSs, etc. ,that way all is interchangeable. If they are RTs you need to have a wider gap between them...don't want to scratch the fairing when cornering. I can supply the pipe to go between them, the rest is up to you. Do you think we should patent the idea?
