Hi Everyone!!

I've had a consistent problem with my gear indicator display mounted on the instrument cluster. In neutral, the neutral light illuminates, but my display shows 2. when in top gear, I get a backwards 6. everything else in between is a mash of weird squiggles. I've already had my cluster apart and cleaned what I could reach, is there another, easy to reach place for me to clean? Indications don't bother me, just curious if its an easy fix.
Cheers B

First is the connector behind the right hand battery cover, than it would be the switch itself. This has been known to fail on occassion due to dirt and moisture. Bitch of a job to get at, so keeping our fingers crossed that some cleaning behind your right hand battery cover fixes it.

Has anyone replaced the gear indicator LCD? Mine has bled out, it is completely black. Happened gradually over the past year. Bled from top to bottom. Oh, 85 K100RS.

Thanks,

Mike Lydon

Hi,
As noted above the switch is difficult to get at but is prone to getting water in with the result that it gives weird problems. Bad connections in the speedo head can also give troubles and those are common on early bikes like yours as the instrument clusters let in water and the humidity attacks the connections. So refurb of the cluster is a good idea and thorough sealing up. Even though I have the Goretex vents mine used to fog up after rain until I got in there and did a thorough sealing job. No more misting since. Replacing the display is fairly straightforward just fiddly.

I too should like to clean the Gear Position Switch to hopefully stop my really annoying teenage-like display constantly getting things wrong !

I do however have a very small technical problem completing this task in that I simply cannot find it! The Clymer hasnt helped this time.

Can anybody please recommend an achievable and perhaps not too-contorted body position that i might adopt to locate the switch please?

thanks again

Easy!

Remove the swing arm and you will find it..
In fact its an easy job but the whole back of the bike has to be removed (wheel, back brake, differential, shaft)
The gear position switch is located on the back of the gear box.
This is another week end of fun, but the best time to do it is when you grease your splines.

Hi there, mine tends to fail wen driving on cold weather (only once a year) or wen riding very wet roads, and returns to normal once the bike gets dry, so dry it with a hair dryer and save time.
Best regards

Greetings all Replacing the gear indicator switch really isn't that tricky at all. I have digital images of me performing the task. If anyone would like a copy, don't hesitate to contact me and I'll send them down the line. Cool

NO NO Johnny, this is realy not that bad a job just follow Berts method and remove the stated items, I followed the how to section in the downloads and stripped and cleaned then re-sealed my switch [that was not working at all] and hay presto all back to normal, if yoy use this time to have a general look around as well including clutch arm then it will give you peace of mind.

Hi All,
The problem Alex lists is almost certainly a bad connection in the instrument cluster or the plug and socket on the back if percussive maintenance aka tapping causes it to work again for a while. Opening it up as I detailed in another post and treating all connections with DeoxIT will fix that and at the same time consider replacing the bulbs with LED's except for the charge light.
Regards,
K-BIKE

Replacing the gear indicator LCD is simple. All you need is dismantling the instrument cluster.

I did it on my bike. I got used instrument cluster from eBay. I used the speedo unit and the gear indicator LCD. I use this as spare for other parts of instrument.

But you may do checking and cleaning the connection before replacing the LCD.

Good luck
