My wife trusts my driving ability, it is the other drivers who seem to lose their minds when it snows here. Everyone moves to Victoria from some other place in Canada with lots of snow but for some reason they lose the ability to drive in snow once they take up residence. Plus no-one has snow tires because it only snows once a year  Renovation of a K-100SE that was sitting for years - Page 2 259495 . Of course every once in a while, like 1996, we really get snow. We had 48 inches in 48 hours. Those summer tires were really useful then.

Just picked up the thread Martyman. Very Nice bike and such low KMs! Good to see you getting stuck straight in, be careful on the white stuff.

Millau viaduct might be on a tour plan for this May. I'll let you know if I pucker up!

TBH, you can't see much once on the bridge. It's far more spectacular from below in the valley.

The previous motorcycle I had was the Kawasaki KLR650 that was very tall and would catch the wind like a sail.  The first long trip I took on it was in April a few years back, very cold and in one section of the Ohio Valley I rode for a few hours on a 45 degree angle making my neck very sore.  I always feared riding that bike on a large bridge and being blown into on going traffic.  When I rode back home from that trip going north back home it was also heavy winds making my neck sore on the other side  Very Happy

Had one nice day to work in my garage this week and did most of the wiring for my power outlet, phone charger and ran a wire for my heated grips.

I purchased this controller (for the heated grips) and I have no idea where and how to mount it.  Any suggestions on how to put it in something sealed would be great.  I did go to an electronics shop searching for a small box and everything was too large.

you might look up "conformal coating" (paint on goo kinda looks like pva glue ) makes circuit boards in exposed areas more resistant to corrosion and shorting out ....good luck !

I tried every possible seating handle bar position with the RS bars and I gave up and I'm trying to put RT bars on this bike.  I ordered a new Braided brake line only to find out that I'm an idiot and should have taken the time to see where the brake line from the reservoir actually went.  I didn't think about it being ABS and it not going directly to the front brake calliper...

I've already ordered a braided brake line and the guy selling it to me said to send it back and he will fix it...

I thought this would be a quick and easy swap and so far I'm finding the cables should all work without changing them?  Will need some help routing them.

i dont think rs cables will fit an rt bar, since it is wider, i put a "c" bar , i think it is , on my rs ,that is possible witout changing anything but the brake hose from the master cylinder to the centre of the triplle tree

Thank you again to Robmack and JR_k100RS for the handlebar switch.  The bike feels like a new bike with the RT bars very comfortable, want to do a long distance trip with it as soon as I get time off.

Friday I left Toronto and headed down the back roads of Michigan to Muster Indiana to try and get to the Three Floyds Brewery. I rode 10 hours and had a great time the first day. In the morning after sleeping at a very noisy camp ground called Pokegan State park I decided to just ride an hour down the interstate to Fort Wayne... Early in the morning in Fort Wayne I was heading into an Arby's parking lot going really slow and wiped out...about and inch drop in asphalt down to a sandy entrance so in the after noon I had a couple of slices of pizza and some beer to take away my sore shoulder (lucky I had my jacket on with the padding)...Spent three or four hours walking around Fort Wayne that's nice but not the most exciting town...picked up a bottle of Three floyds beer  : ) I didn't make it to Munster but that can be my next trip when I have more time and $$$ As much as I love doing back road riding I think I'm going to have to do some research on where to do that and mainly do interstate riding to save fuel.  The RS with the LT bars are very comfortable, with the RS screen and a Laminar lip the wind is not so fun.  I will save up and buy the Aeroflow screen for my next trip that will hopefully be much longer.

Hey Martyman,

It certainly sux dropping a bike, hope the shoulder's feeling better.

Your set up is where I'm thinking of going, I have an RS with RS bars and I don't like riding for too long in that position.

A couple of questions, did you require lengthening of the switch looms to the handgrip switches? Did you replace both clutch and throttle cables? (Oh and of course Idle Boost or "choke" cable).

It'd be nice to just flick my eyes to the rearviews instead of doing the full "head hunt" to spot things in the RS mirrors.

I have a set of bars, I'm not sure if they are RT or LT or if in fact hey are the same thing. Can anybody clear that up for me?

Cheers,

Jerry.

As far as I know they are the same, the K1100 bars are different at the ends where the weights fasten.
The electrical cables are the same but clutch, throttle and choke are longer on the RT/LT

Hey Martyman,

Looking good, hope the shoulder is ok.

How freakin awesome are the RT/LT bars. soooo comfortable. But your right, the RS screen simply doesn't cut it any longer. I really really really really want an Aeroflow screen but to get one out here will cost in the order of $600AUD which is just a bit to crazy for me. Although......

Anyways, today is going to be spent trying to fit a LT screen to my RS fairing to experiment with various screen heights to find the best position.

Jez.....DO IT! you'll be glad. you will need longer control cables (throttle, clutch, choke) but as Rick said, electric cables are the same and you wont need new ones. You may need a new front break line from the M/C, may be good a time to get a set of steel braided lines. But also be aware what you gain in terms of comfort in the neck/back/wrist dept, you will loose in wind protection - unless you sort out some other kind of screen. I have an extended RS screen which comes up about 4 inches higher then normal, but its still to short for me.

The RT/LT screen is so worth it. its a single curvature, about £85 new at Motorworks. its easy to make locally. Most specialists can make one if you give them a template or profile. You can use a thin plastic to make one because it is cut and drilled on the flat.

Hey martyman....just for you (me) I decided to fit a K100RT screen I have on hand, to see how it goes.

It is better then the tall RS screen I have (which itself is better then the stock item) but still not perfect for me and my height.

There is noticeably less wind noise and buffeting than with my other one, but when I tuck in just a fraction, all becomes still and all I can hear is the bike. Soo...if it was a bit taller it would be ideal for me. It could be leant forward and made steeper, but that would look even shitter then it already does and wouldn't do much for efficiency I guess..

I am 186cm (last time I checked)

I reckon Im going to try and get someone to make me an Aeroflow knock-off to my specs....Id try myself but good luck required in finding an oven big enough....

Renovation of a K-100SE that was sitting for years - Page 2 Img_2023

Note the enduro style rear-views.....they have a hinge so can fold up or down to whatever height you want. I flip them in, out of the way when lane filtering, as the only thing that gets in the way for me is my mirrors and the cars mirrors...

Floyd I was looking at the Aeroflow and I do think its a nicer looking screen.  I bought a used Parabellum off Ebay for a good price and chose it over the Aeroflow because I think its a bit better design.  I also took the time to finally get my heated grips installed with temp controller/on off.Renovation of a K-100SE that was sitting for years - Page 2 Bmw4_zps8ad467e0

Last trip riding down to Fort Wayne I kept saying to myself "gotta get a taller windshield" really don't know how guys can ride those Harleys with no windshield and a little bucket helmet...If I was in Australia I would use the black part of the Parabellum as a mold and make you one..

Okie dokie now we're talkin....more high RS screen options.....this looks like the kinda thing I need, hadnt heard of Parabellum before. Well done. Do you know what height variant it is? How do you like the protection?

Due to its 2 piece construction it will be muuuuuch cheaper to ship it to Aus then the Aero flow. Like you say, the Aeroflow looks cooler but this looks like a better design.

Sunday I saw a window of opportunity to get on last longish ride in of the Season.  377KM  from my home to the East end of Ottawa.  I headed out around 10am and did not get to Ottawa until 5PM and it was already dark.  I wore my full winter gear and my new windshield made the ride much more comfortable, but even with the heated grips I was still a bit chilled.  I had planned on riding one hour father east to a Brewery and gave up that idea after a horrible night in a really terrible motel (noisy neighbor woke me at 3am slamming the door and talking really loud in the hallway).  I woke up to find frost on my seat and the sun in the sky so I decided to see how far I could get back home on a full tank being as fuel economical as possible.  I stopped a few times and had to deal with two small stretches of construction still able to get 300KM with a bit of gas at the bottom of my tank, maybe enough for 10KM? (last line of the two red bars on the fuel gauge)  Riding back from Ottawa I stopped in a small town and had breakfast with a veteran that left before I finished my breakfast to go to a Remembrance day parade, talked about his town and we had both watched some programs on the History channel the night before. This spring I will change the air filter, new tires and change the plug wires, I find they are not really tight and have to check and push them back onto the plugs after a few rides.   Overall so far this is the nicest bike I've ridden for comfort after changing the handle bars, windshield.  If I could change anything it would be the clunky 5 speed to a smooth 5 or 6 speed and another 50KM per tank would be nice.

loved that little write up above mate. Nice mix of bike talk and travel story.

Glad to hear your new screen is working out. Reckon Ill order the extra large one for my wife's Christmas present. Like Homers bowling ball to Marge.

Looking forward to seeing how many KMs to a tank I get now that I have fixed my odo. 300 is pretty good for these, no?

I too would like a larger tank. Maybe one day when I meet someone with a tig Ill make a bigger one.

And yeah, the clunky gearbox is not my favourite aspect of the bike. i recently did an oil change and added semi synthetic and its smoother than what I was using before.

Also....for whatever reason your pics are showing up distorted to me. Looks like they are being squeezed from the sides.

Hi Martyman, good story.

Have you got the ferrules screwed onto your spark plugs?

It seems unusual for the leads to be that loose.

What is this ferrules screwed you speak of?  If anyone could post a picture of this I would very much appreciate it  Very Happy  and thank you guys for the comments.  I really enjoy reading the ADV site long rides forum entries and how well some people can write and have time to actually take lots of pictures on their adventures.

EDIT if you mean the things that usually screw onto the end of a spark plug no I do not I asked about that before.  The first time I took the spark plug wires off and replaced the plugs I asked why they would not have those metal ends that screw onto the spark plug.  I looked it up they call them terminal nuts...

When I bought my bike it had a pair of 2003 Battlax tires, they were not cracked or aged, did look a bit shiny so I rode them until this Spring.  I know probably not the smartest move, the tires did work well and never really had a problem with them.

I've made a blog about my slow build up of my bike and getting ready to possibly do a 10 day trip this spring (could be in the fall) the delay is mainly funds and time away from starting my Spring work that might intefere.

http://iamnowabouttomakethegreatadventure.blogspot.ca/

I ended up buying Bridgestone Spitfires and I'm very pleased with my choice, also the decision to go back to the 100/90/18 front tire instead of the 110/90/18 has made the handling of the bike much nicer.

I have used that size front but 140/80 rear. Handling is sweet.

You did well on old tyres but maybe you don't get cold wet riding like we do here.

Now you have a vast improvement.

I made the executive decision to cancel a trip I've been planning for a few weeks this morning.  A few days before I had changed the oil filter and oil on my bike.  Last night I noticed that there was a small blob of oil on the floor, the oil cap on the bottom was leaking.  I'm not sure why but I will have to figure out what I did wrong for it to leak.

Also I had the tingly uncomfortable feeling I was going to freeze my ass off if I went, frost on my roof and freeze warnings where I was headed.

It's a shame you missed the trip.

I put a new O-ring on that plate almost every time I do an oil change. The black nitrile O-rings go hard after about 12 months and usually don't seal well.  Of course the big problem is that you lose the oil to fix it.

Thanks Rick,  This morning again we had flurries of snow in the morning. I put in a new filter and my oil is absolutely clear after taking off the oil pan and letting it drip out all night.  I had bought a Fram and reading that the black grip stuff will fall off so I removed it.  I think that I must have put that oil plate on incorrectly some how, the O ring looked fine, put a bit of black silicone and sealed it up...will leave the skid plate off for a week and make sure no leaks.

This spring for me did not start well, had a very bad car accident, totalled my dream truck (Toyota Tacoma) luckily I was not injured.  My poor old 16 year old dog was in the truck and got her bell rung ,few weeks of having seizures she passed.

I had planned a bunch of motorcycle trips, so far only went to Paris Ontario for the vintage meet and this is when my bike started to not run right.  I was suppose to ride to the Montreal meet this weekend and passed not wanting to risk riding with it not running well.  My idle kept dropping with almost like a missed firing cylinder effect.  So today I kept looking and looking and noticed that I only had one vacuum cap left on the fuel injectors!  I put my finger on the other ones and right away I could feel the suction and the idle go back to normal...I took an old squeegee window cleaning head that was rubber and cut out some squares, drilled and now it runs like a charm again   Very Happy  I will order some new ones if I can find some online or try the downtown dealer.  After my accident I was almost going to give up riding motorcycles, put a scare into me and now that I'm slowly getting back into riding I'm thinking about some adventures to go on.

Not good news about the crask and the pooch but good that you came through OK.
I had a bad car crash in 1982 and it was 9 months before I got back on the Kawasaki but was glad I didn't sell it when I was considering it as I know now that I would have just bought another one. You never get bikes out of the system.

Hey Martyman,
I like your innovative fix (even if just a temporary measure) - thanks for sharing.

Yes it takes a while to get over a reminder about the risks we face on the road - mine was a broken femur from a head on in 2004 whilst being driven to a mine site for work visit.
Luckily big bone breaks happen weekly in those parts (South of Johannesburg) due to the deep level mining operations, so I had a surgeon who was well up to speed!

Your original vacuum caps must have gone hard and cracked up I guess - probably a good idea to do the gas test to check for air being sucked into the system via throttle body rubber connector leaks or via the S shaped crank case breather pipe?

They're a standard auto part. I just bought a 6 pack of 4mm vacuum caps for about AU$6 from the local SuperCheap Auto store here in Oz. They're silicon rubber an much better quality than the original caps.

They're readily available on ebay
and dirt cheap at about $12/100

These look pretty flash and cheap

Sorry to hear about your dog Martyman. its always sad when they go. I've had 4 labs over the years. One was hit by a truck, two died of old age and the last one I lost in a divorce Sad

I need some guidance...After owning this bike now for a few years I want to do some real customization.  The problem I'm having is an inner fight that I should not really heavily mess with this bike because it is a "Special edition".

I've already changed this bike from RS handlebars to LT bars and added a aftermarket windscreen so its not the perfect bike for me yet.

What I would do is make it more like this (below) except not change the rear (would like to keep luggage)   Maybe change the bike so that I can put everything back if I did decide to sell it?  I'm thinking that I would need to change the seat to this style (more flat) to have this type of handlebar for reach?  Just thinking out loud if anyone has any insight or suggestions.

Ya I know its a tough thing to do, would only do it if I could do it right.  I'm either going to invest some money in it to lighten it up and make it more friendly (and less heat on my ankles in the summer) or sadly sell her.

Marty you bought it back from a near death experience a few years back so don't go killing it off now. Sell it on if you need but don't butcher it.  You cant do a minimilist custom on a bike that is all engine. Every time I see a pic of a "cafe" custom Brick I think of the hoard in Life of Brian with their sandal on a stick chanting we're all individuals.  Don't do it Marty don't do it 🇳🇴

I will also add that in my opinion if any K besides a K1 will become a real collectors item it will be those K100RS SE BMW really hit the spot with them.

IMHO I would sell it off and get another with a trashed fairing to chop up.  The SE is probably as close as the K100(or the 75 for that matter) will come to being a collector bike.

As far as I can tell, cafe and scrambler conversions merely put an otherwise good brick into the fast lane to parts bike status.

Ok I will clean her up and decide if I keep her or sell her next month, thank you for your replies.    The old guy that sold this bike to me pretty much gave it away because it was the dead of winter and I guess he needed the money.  I have no idea what I should ask if I sell it the Canadian vintage motorcycle market is all over the place when it comes to price...either people ask a fair price and its missing key things like documentation or people ask way way too much.  You can get a good indication from this site.  Doing some research for possible other bikes British and European prices are almost double what we are asking for some bikes.
