It lives, I just got took it outside and after a few moments of cranking it fired right to life.  It sounds great and it didn't require much choke at all and no choke a few minutes after that.  I synced the throttle bodies and the thing idles like a champ.  I did notice that when you rev it up a little the levels are not even.  Has anyone ever messed with the butterflies at higher rpm's?  I usually sync my jap bikes at idle then rev them up to 5000 and resync them there since thats where They run on the highway.  One thing that has changed is the bike is not charging and it did before I tore it down.  Any suggestions where I should start to fix that problem?  I do not have the gauges on the bike yet.  My father just got home and I will be calibrating the spedo on monday.  I will post the link to the youtube video of the 2nd start later tonight.

The charge indicator bulb is in the current path from +12V through the alternator to ground that causes the alternator field coil to function.  If you haven't put on the instrument cluster, the +12V and bulb resistance required for the field coil to work is not there and the alternator will not work properly. 

Also, in an earlier post you mentioned that you replaced all the bulbs in the cluster with LEDs.  Make sure that you kept the charge indicator  as an incandescent bulb.  It is needed for the alternator to function.  You can't use a LED in this circuit.

Well you guys were correct. All I had to do was plug in the gauge cluster and since I used LED bulbs I have to rev it up to around 2500 and the charge light goes out. I am a little concerned at how it charges though, at idle it is only putting out 12.9 volts and 13.9 when the RPM's are above 2000. Do I need to put a new regulator in it or new brushes? Other than that I did find that the ignition is a little flaky. I have to turn the key just right so the lights are on brightly or the bike does not want to start. Once its in the right spot it fires right up with no problems. So I will be getting a new ignition in the near future. 

I got it all put together and took it out for it's maiden ride. I have to tell you it is very very nice ride. With the progressive springs in the front and progressive shock on the rear it rides like my friends new Harley. It holds the road very nicely and corners very well. I have also installed a fork brace so that might help it handle better than stock. I did notice that it is a little buzzy but I really think that that could be addressed if I set all those compensation screws the same and adjust the butterfly valves. When I synced the throttle bodies I did notice that they are not all even at around 5000 rpm so I am assuming that that is the cause of some of the buzz. But I will be putting some miles on the bike before I mess with it any further. I am very pleased with how the bike turned out and I do appreciate all the help I have received from members on this forum. Next will be to see how far off the spedo is and deal with a flaky LED in the cluster. So here are some pictures of the first ride. I did decide that I will definitely be looking for a different seat. I really do not like the way this one holds me put and I can't move around at all. I will also be looking for some highway pegs.

Congrats with the maiden ride.   The ignition switch can be dismantled and cleaned,

I will get the switch cleaned before I ride it some more.  

I will let you know about the seat if I decide to change it out.  

I have seen a Corbin seat that looked more like the stock seat in other pictures.  I might look for one of those or get the stock seat re contoured and have a gel pad installed with a custom cover.  Well see what happens once I get some more miles put on the bike.  Right now I am just going to enjoy the ride.

I rode with a Corbin, and loved it, a little hard, put a gel pad on it, but allows you to slide around in the saddle, unlike the seat you have and the stock seat, I would go with corbin++++, with a gel pad!!

Ignition switch yes - Regulator NO.  
Take out alternator and clean it, or at least remove the regulator board from the rear and using nothing stronger that alchol scrub the board clean, rinse  and carefully reinstall it.

Be careful of overcharging Lead Acid, Gel and Saturated Glass Fiber batteries...
Especially in a Motor Vehicles where temperatures fluctuates, over-voltage causes gassing and cell failures.

Battery charge rate is controlled by the voltage applied, but an alternator converts power 
((RPM'sxField Volts) = (Alternator Volts x Amps)) 
At low revs the supplied alternator power may not be enough, the bikes current demand is mostly constant, so to satisfy teh equation the whole of the systems volts are dragged down as a response.   The regulator sees the voltage drop and causes the battery to continue to supply current through the charge lamp trying to keep up.

                  
I expect this is why people replace the older low amperage alternators with the newer models                            higher amperage alternators where they do fit.     i.e. The higher amperage is a                                                    proportionate increase at low revs, servicing the current (amps) also allowing the alternator to                            achieve charging voltage at lower RPM's.   I have seen however other forums stating that the                              Bosch Alternator regulator only gets to 14v in most BMW's                                 

Boring stuff follows, and it has already probably been said..  Raising the regulator top voltage setting, will not solve the issue at low revs, but will cause an overvoltage situation at higher revs.  
                    Short term overvoltage recharges the battery faster at higher cell temperature and increased gassing,                                                                                                                                            long term cooks the battery.

"The recommended float voltage of most low-pressure lead acid batteries is 2.25 to 2.27V/cell. (Large stationary batteries float at 2.25V at 25°C (77°F.) Manufacturers recommend lowering the float charge at ambient temperatures above 29°C (85°F)."
Float voltage is the maintenance voltage that should be applied to a charged battery. (max abt 13.62v)

+1 on the alternator clean up. 
  
Alternator output sounds about right at low rpm and high rpm.  Basically pulling maybe 10 - 12 amps with standard headlight, LED dash, brake and turn signals and the electronic brains.  No need to cook the battery as your input voltage still exceeds your output load on a 50 amp alternator.   Unless you running a lithium battery that needs +14 volts, you should be good for another 50,000 miles.

Thanks for the information.  I will just clean up what I have and check it again.  I put a AGM battery in the bike and I put it on a trickle charger when it will be sitting for a few weeks.  My bike has the 35amp alternator and I do not plan on running any other gear but the stock stuff I will just stick with it for the time being.

I was finally able to put some miles on the bike today.  Took it for a 150 miles round trip to go have root beer floats with my girlfriend and it ran like a top.  Yesterday we rode over to my house and she finally rode her new to her suzuki GS1000 home.  I spent the last 9 months building that bike from the frame up for her.  

I did clean the ignition switch this morning and even though it did not appear dirty, I have not had a problem with it hard starting since.  I am no vacation for the next week or so so I will be riding it as much as I can. 

I did see some oil drips on the bottom of the engine so I cleaned those up and I will see where it is coming from.  I do not know how long the bike sat so some of the seals might be a little dry, and I need to adjust the clutch a little.  I know realize the on this bike it is looking for the hazard switch which I did not install and the light on the gauges stays on for a little while.  Annoying but not worth pulling the tank and hooking it up.

I never had a chance to ride with the RS bars.  The RS came with risers that moved them back and up a little.  The RT bars work really well on my bike.  I have them set up so they are just above what I can see in the mirrors and I feel no turbulence from them.  The windshield is great, no buffeting and it keeps the blast of on coming air off my chest. My windshield does have that extra little wing on the top of it. So I am not sure what it would be like with the plain stock windshield.  I have some of those air scoops for around the fork legs that I will be installing to try and get more human cooling air in the cockpit.  This is definitely a cooler weather bike.  It gives off a lot of heat on my legs and feet which is nice but I think it might be a little much when it hits 100 around here.  And yes we do see 100 degree days here in WI.

When I rode my bike in April I didn't notice the heat from the engine as much as lately on warm days that is for sure, it does really get warm on the legs.  I have the extra wing on mine and found with the RS bars it didn't really do much so it should be interesting to see if it does make a difference with the RT bars.

I got to ride my bike most of the day yesterday running errands and put 250 miles on it. It does smoke when you start it up every time and I have been putting it on the center stand every time. So once again I hope that the valve seals will sell some and cut down on that in the future. It really does not bother me but the girlfriend was following me and said "What's wrong with your bike, cough cough" After a few miles it goes away and the level is staying steady so I am not concerned. I do see a little weeping from the oil pan gasket so I will probably replace that next winter, unless it stops this summer and I will just leave it alone. 

I did notice that when I lean into a left turn either the center stand of the side stand scrapes the ground. I am thinking that I need to bend the part I push with my foot up a little. Is this a common problem? I looked at the spare I have and they both look the same.

Now that I have had a chance to put around 600 miles on my K I have found that I really like it and I don't notice the buzziness much.  My bike gets around 41 to 42MPG so I think thats pretty good.  It's about the same as the girlfriends GS1000.  I am still not able to figure out what's up with the side stand.  It seems to be in the right place but hits the ground when I lean a bunch to the left.  

One thing I am going to change is the LED's I put in the turn signal slots.  They are way to bright when I ride at night and today the right turnsignal paddle on the control broke.  I picked up a replacement control but I am hoping that I can just replace the paddle.  I really don't want to take my tank off again.  Is this something I can do?  Any thing I need to watch out for i.e. small springs or delicate wires?  

The right turn signal control had started getting intermittent for last 100 miles or so.

looks like the sidestand lever ...is - has been bent ....erm rewelded back on nearly 90 degrees out of line

it should almost wrap around the exhaust and be fairly close fit  

just what I see

The turn signal paddles fit with a single screw and there are no springs or things to go flying. Just undo the screw that holds the switch block in place (cross-head screw to the left of the paddle), lift off the switch block and you'll have access to the paddle fixing screw.

However, if you are having intermittent switching problems, it may need the contacts DeoxITing.

I have the same G-max helmet, in platinum. Get a few comments on it from time-to-time.

That RS->RT handlebar swap is awesome! But, why do you have them set so high like an LT/K100? Shouldn't it be in the lowered position (a la RT sport touring) to take advantage of the faring (see the links in my signature). The change only takes minutes to do (and it's just as easy to put it back if you don't like it).

That helmet is actually my snowmobile helmet, It's the only one I have at the girlfriends house so it's the only one I have to wear up there.  It does fog up when it gets below zero though so this year I picked up a different one with a stand alone ski goggle.  

Thanks for the insight on the side stand.  I will look at the weld and I have another one from my parts bike I can fit and see if that solves my problem.  I will get some pictures of it next time I am at her house.  

I did pick up a parts control so I will prob just replace the paddle and clean the contacts so the signal works.  I looked at MAX for replacement paddles but I did not see them in the parts fiche.  Do you happen to have a part number?

I do like the RT bars, I put them there so I can see behind me in the rear view mirrors.  I also don't get any buffeting from them.  I was advise on another forum to put them up higher to prevent getting turbulence from my hands.  I never rode the bike with the RS bars but I will try them when I get my other K on the road next spring.  I do have some bar risers that came with the RS bars so I figured that they sat to low to be comfortable on long rides.  It is going to be my this winter project.  It is going to be a naked K since I will be painting the other fairings I have and putting that stuff on my current K.  I just need to learn how to paint and get it all prepped for new paint.  It will be the same blue the current bike is with out the road rash on the upper and lower fairing.
