This photo shows what appears to be the result of the upper crankcase impacted by a threaded rod.
Note marks at ends of both screwdrivers.
this is on upper surface just inboard of no.4 injector

Damage from factory? P1070210

I can't think how this could happen except at the factory. What do you think?

Probably fell of the top of the heap where it was stored after casting

NO wonder the drive splines are Knackered, the impact to cause this HAD to have had an effect on the splines.

Where is that receipt?

On a BMW, any loose nut between the seat and the handlebars is cause for a warranty claim!

I actually think that is a fossil, your bike is so old and spent a million years on the sea bed.

I like RT's explanation best, however new information has come to light.

The vacuum line from the Fuel pressure regulator, FPR, has a spiral wound covering,

it (the damage) is caused by this wire wrap. NO WAY this is abrasion, it is pressed in

to the alloy.

It is a warranty claim because the fuel line is stuffed. After only 27 years!

 Where is that invoice?

I agree with you 100% its not abrasion but more than likely electrolysis. Stainless steel and Aluminium are almost mortal enemies in the marine world and that is in a place that we all know is very difficult if not impossible to keep clean and that's when electrolysis sets in.

BMW is well aware of the problem and had issued a recall for all the K100 built during OktoberFest 1985 to 1988.
(bulletin service # 145983-02)
This can affect the integrity of the aerodynamic leading to the motorcycle not starting during cold nights.

Likely right Rick... but it's soooo clean like pressed into molten metal. I would expect some fluffy
powdery stuff with galvanic reaction? Hard to imagine a rubber hose with wire wound able to be squashed
like that... so you are probably right.

Nah, just pop on down to the local museum. Tell 'em you have found a previously undiscovered fossil and it is only 30K year old.

I actually think that is from the factory.

Look closely.

The 'ribbing' is interrupted by the stamp on the case. The little box things type pattern kind of ornamental edgework to the main flange on the outer rim of the main block housing the shaft and associated paraphanalia.

I use the big words for Blakey..His rocks....Off..

Looks like a casting fault, probably piping. Caused shrinkage during the cooling from molten stage.
