Well CF, I bet she would be prepared to chip in with the odd forum comment Smile

Thanks Halo, he is in his eighties now, with a bad ticker, but can still be a bit cantankerous when he wants!

That Lady reminds me of a similar story in Dublin a Miss Laetitia Overend bought herself a Rolls Royce in 1927 and took a 3 week maintenance course with the Rolls Royce company on servicing. She maintained the car until her death in 1977 and believed it to be the only one in Ireland with a tow bar (she also ran a farm!).

I've got the fiberglassing and reapir of the side panel completed and ready for painting, will stick up some pics when I've more time. It crumbled so badly because it had been poorly repaired in the past. I called into the Halford's store in Carrickmines today to get a rattle can made up but the don't have access to BMW Motorrad codes and couldn't mix me up one because some genious had thrown out their color code card. What a wasted detour...Muppets! (mumbles under breath...Mad )

On a postive note the bike is running really well and returned 46.3mpg (imperial) or 6.14lt/100KMS city and motorway riding at 120-130kph. I'm pleased with that!

It's also the first time I've had to use the Pirelli demons in really heavy rain and surface water and the were very good - gave no cause for concern, even with lying water on the motorway...I've been reading these wide tyre threads...Pirelli Angels...Mmmmm tempting!

Panel repair. I used Isopon P40 with the glass fibres in it for strength then P38 for fine finishing . Lots of spider cracks chased with dremmel and drilled out at end. Centre fin had a bit missing and the whole centre of the panel was "soggy" and had to be supported till cured. I had two unsuccessful side trips in Dublin getting paint mixed. Then I had the sagging paint (chemical reaction between old paint and plastic primer I reckon) issue. so had to clean it all back to bare panel before painting again. I'll let the pics speak for themselves..

supported fin..

had to remove some material to get shape back. P40 filled it again.

I must have dozed off for a fortnight - completely missed your 'off'

Glad to see you're OK 88 and that the damage to the bike is pretty superficial.

Good job on the fairing fix - looks a million dollars - of shiny gold! Nice. Very Happy

Having fixed the panel I'm hoping to whip off the top fairing this weekend to straighten the Spreader/spider/fairing bracket that I recently repainted. I've been riding without the lower side panels and the pointy end of the fairing on the right is just toutching my knee cap in a most disconcerting manner. the left side site about 30mm further forward so I guess the topple and impact on the side has stressed the bracket.

Any tips on straightening it guys? (I think it needs to go 15-20mm forward and about 5mm up.

I didn't get to put the fairing back together at the weekend as I had planned so I decided to tackle a smaller job instead.

Inspired by others efforts on the forum I set about using the left over LED strip from the running lights to make some LED brake lights. The LED strip can be cut every 3 LEDS and has convinient solder points at either side of the cut point...

1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 Img_0524

I soldered in some tails to the strips and made a couple of brakets out of some aluminium angle found lurking beside the bench, bonded in the LEDS and brackets and picked up a feed from the brake light...

It's small..but it's progress!

1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 Img_0525

The picutre shows them dimmer than the ordinary brake light but that's just the photo they are quite well matched to the naked eye.

Thanks all.

I'd like to get an opinion on the cam lobes if you can. I removed the cover this evening for painting and noticed that all the cam journals were bright and shiney except no 3 and 4 on the top rail. they were darker in colour and no. 4 (rearmost) shows a spot and streak to the left of it which is dulled.

Is it something I should worry about? or what might be causing it?

sorry for pic quality just snapped it with my phone.

A good pic will help but from what I see there the discolouration is on the base circle of the lobe and that will have no load at all if the shim adjustment is correct.
Run your finger nail across the lobe to feel for hardface damage but I will be willing to bet that it is smooth as a babies bum.
It is most likely a varnish build up.

You're bang on the money, Rick and thanks for that response. All the lobes are perfectly smooth and a bit of solvent has removed the varnish. I'm happier now knowing that.

Does anyone have any opinion on this....

Inside of crancase cover removed this morning - Coating is crinkly, hard and cracked under the oil filler cap....

1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 Img_0529

I was expecting to see bare Alu on the inside of the cover.

How should I deal with this ? Paintstripper?

Does it need to be recoated with anything or is it enough to clean it off and leave it bare?

Thanks in anticipation.

It should be black in colour, (at least mine is) I would certainly remove whatever is loose/flaking as you don't want to risk any of it going around the engine and blocking a oil channel... I wouldn't worry to much about repainting it. But would use a fine grade wet and dry/emmery cloth to ensure that it is flattened out on the edges to reduce the risk of more coming off....

Yep, get rid of it completely if you can. If you get rid of the loose stuff and not the rest, over time it will deteriorate again.

Have you an old oil filter you can pull apart to see how much paint is in it? Now may be a good time to change the oil and filter.

Hmmmm must have been something in the oil it didn't take a liking to.
I would clean it off but not recoat just leave bare metal.
The biggest problem I see is the possibility of your primary filter or oil filter getting clogged.
Haven't been running Castrol R and Methanol have you.

Yep good points guys and thanks. I dunno what oil was last used because I got a mechanic to do the last service but the oil is quite burnt smelling (only 2200 miles done since mind you) and a new filter won't go amiss.

I'll drop the sump off - it needs painintg too and I've just discovered since my last post that a friend in the landrover fraternity has set up a blasting cabinet with soda and owes me a favour or three. So I'll head north next week with my covers and sump to clean them up which should kill all those little birdies with one stone (or bead as the case may be!). Piccies will follow as we progress.

The frustrating thing is that I'm missing good riding weather here but consoling myself with the thought that I'm gaining ground on the longterm plans.

Hi 88,
It looks as though a PO has repainted the cover both inside and out! with a paint that's not oil compatible.

Paul.

Good call guys. I dropped off the sump pan tonite to find the missing coatings in the pickup strainer. I also cut open the filter to see what had made its way in there and found some very tar like substance lining the bottom which I reckon is some of the paint as well. I'll load up some pics when I can as the internet connection is not playing ball with the photos tonight. I'm glad I didn't give into the urge to shove the fairings back on and ride on this occasion.

A sincere thanks to all who chipped in.

edit to add pics.....

on closer examination a lot of whats in the sump pan is old flange sealer. Some PO didn't used the correct goo!

added pics to prev post for those interested.

On the cam chain ....with the covers off I have had a really good look at the cam chain in situ. Everything seems to be tight and normal with no excessive slack anywhere. The tensioner is extended to just 7.9mm. Is there anyway of checking further without stripping the chain out? or should I leave well enough alone?

You could check the plastic face on the tensioner blade, should be changed every 60K km according to BMW.

Did change mine at 190K km (together with the chain), then it was worn 1,1 mm into the plastic face, which have a total thickness of 2,5 mm.

I've fancied the idea of an electric screen for a while so I couldn't resist when this k1100 fairing appeared on a local ad website.

1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 Img_0613

1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 Img_0612

Unfortunately the guy who owned them wouldn't split them (I realy only wanted the top) also he had cut and used the front bracket as part of his naked conversion so I'll have to do the CF/Robmack bracket and clock mod on mine to make it fit. Just need to figure out the wiring but I'm looking forward to seeing the results when the bike goes back together.

After studying it carefully I've decided against using the k1100 lower faing even though I love the mesh grilles. If anybody wants the bare upper or lower k1100 fainirng panels PM me - all are in good condition and forum mebers get first refusal!

Last night I went to my mates and spent the evening peering into the blasting cabinet. Very enjoyable and pleasing results too...

The results of my weekends labours...most pleasing to mine eyes! The engine covers were one of the most visibly shabby things about the bike, I'm very relieved to see then refurbed.

1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 Iphone18

The cover bolts came up really well with a rub of a brass cup brush in the drill to remove old paint followed by a quick rub of 800 the 1500 grit wet paper.

Bling Bling!....

I like the look of it so much I'd like to leave it naked but that feeling will disslove with the first rain shower - which doesn't take long here.

I used "U-Pol Acid #8" for a primer (recommend to me by SidecarPaul and I'm finding it very good). Followed by two coats of Plasti-Kote Super Satin Black. Reccomended by Big D. About a 30min bake in my little "oven"/heater box really sets them off nicely and helps the curing along in our cooler climate (Mid summer 16c 1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 177381 ). The heater box really speeds things up I was able to get all these coated and dried between Saturday & Sunday morning.

Hi Halo, I'm a great fan of Plasti-kote too, I did the Vincent engine covers, cylinders and heads with it and used Humbrol enamel to brush paint the crankcases...... that was 40K miles ago.

Plasti-kote eh? Now I just have to find out where to buy some. Apparently Bunnings used to stock it, but I was reading on another forum it is no longer made. I hope that is not the case.

I found out that Wattyl is the distributor in Australia. Sent them an email and here is the reply.

Good Afternoon Ross

Plastikote is available at Masters Home Improvement Centres. This product can also be obtained through any Wattyl stockists. If they do not carry the stock you could ask if they would mind ordering it with the next stock order.

Kindest Regards

Edit http://www.masters.com.au
I have just been given the biggest run around by almost every Wattlyl distributor in Sydney. I rang the local Masters shop and he asked how many cans I wanted.
Hope that helps.

Good morning,
I was just wondering if this paint is available in Australia?
If not do you have something similar?
I notice Bunnings used to sell Plasti-Kote, but they appear to no longer stock it.

Regards,

I'm slowly putting the bike back together...itching to ride it on the few fine days that have just passed but it's proving difficult to juggle small kids , work and the 1 million jobs to be done when you do get a fine day!

Anyhoo...here's one little job I made progress on this evening. New battery tray mounts fitted...

I got these from the radionics website here in Dublin (big thanks to Charlie 99 for his help with identifying parts)

1988 LT light renovation - Page 2 Img_0619

Like Charlie I bought longer bolt sizes in order to get to good thread in the socket.. Getting the old ones out was a bit tedious as the rubbers had parted company from the bolts leaving a smooth domed head. I used an old chisel to lift the edges then drove it round with an old screwdriver and eventually got them out. followed with an M6 tap.

I now have secure battery & tray sitting square and my rear brake resevior is much happier too.

88

P.S. the part number on the packaging shown above should find them on any radionics website - cost was €2.40 each +Post.

Getting there with piecing the bike back together just the lower fairings to go but no more time tonight. I also have the electric screen and upper dash fitted but not wired yet, looks great I must say.

I fired it up tonight for the first time in a month and was a bit tentative as the timing mark I had scribed into the casing was all but erased by me cleaning up the flange with emery paper (dumb mistake Rolling Eyes ).

What was left was so feint I was entirely unsure as to whether it was the remains of the mark I had made or not. Anyway she fired up at the second time of asking and it may need slight adjustment but I'll continue putting it together for a road test before deciding.

I'm looking forward to a spin before the week is out cheers
