You got it wrong buddy...
The negotiable is the monkey (passenger). The non negotiable is the cargo.
What is the sense of having a chair if you cannot securely carry your emergency supplies?

Beware of weigh bridges. A mate, of large proportions asked another mate (with a ute) to take garbage to the dump. Upon arriving at weighbrid to dump, large bloke gets out and goes to ask the bloke in the booth what the arrangements were.So the ute was weighed without large bloke in it. On the way out they were weighed again to determine what the cost was for the rubbish and large bloke was in the ute. They were accused of stealing rubbish from the tip, because they weighed more going out than in. Mistake worked out and they were not charged as the operator could not stop laughing.

Alby, spoke to my mechanic who is a man of few, but direct words. He mentioned "rocking horse shit is easier to find." Last time he tried to source one was 3 years ago and he couldn't get one. IF you can find anyone with one, the going price would be about $200.
Another thought....what about a single mag wheel that could fit? Just in case it is of any help, I have 4 15inch rims from a Suzuki Swift at home doing nothing.
Good luck.

Didn't ask, but can find out tomorrow......do you mean the steel rims I have or the VW wheels ?
The VW wheels came in three styles....4 stud, and 2 5 stud styles and they were not interchangeable.

Hey Alby I will give a few mates a call that do old car collection and see if they might be able to help. I recall one of them telling me about a beetle he had that he was going to turn into a beach buggy. He might be getting rid of his rims. If thats the case I'll see if I can get more than one.

I have to agree with the 16" school of thought though, eveything now seems to be 16" or larger even on small cars. Makes me wonder what people with old cars do for tyres. Mate who runs tyre shop reckons that tyres for old stuff are more costly than new too, I guess its supply and demand thing.

The primemover part of your outfit looks the goods too, hope your keeping drawings and notes for us numpty's.

Thanks Bert. Nearly have all the parts now. I will have to Book you for a weekend when the last of them get here.

I am going to take drawings once it is all together just before it is painted. I will ask about the 16" rim idea.

It looks like the second generation of EML subframes (Maybe EZS).
It is a lot better than mine, because you don't have to remove the forks in order to disassemble the subframe.

LH made clones of EML stuff here in Oz, so it's not too surprising it looks like EML. My previous K sidecars had HRD subframes, this is much stiffer at the steering head which means its steers better too.

That's from Bob Martin Engineering, somewhere in Victoria. Looking again, I recognise the outfit, it belongs to a guy from Bega named Steve. I found the subframe and the leading link for him years back.

Started to put some pieces together..now its raining AGAIN!!!

I am going to have to go to a smaller rim size mabey a 12 inch as the swing arm that came with the chair was a highly modified 10 inch moke arm. it has been modded to allow a 13 inch wheel of another vehicle to fit. I just replaced it with a mini trailing arm. and now have the required park brake ability.

one of those days for indoors jobs... Subframe Construction K100 Side Car - Page 3 502531
wonder how Rick and Marg are travelling ?, still wet down this way.
shame about the swingarm Alby, how about replacing it with a K arm , complete with brakes and wheel ,
just enlarge the glassing around the wheel arch.
It might solve the rim dilemma.
just thinking outside the box for a moment...

It looks like the hub that I sent to Col, but it certainly must be lighter.
Nice job. I am anxious to see the project completed and hear about the first ride with the chair.

Keep us posted.

Paul.

I have seen it said that these "little bits" are a by product of all the swarf.

The hub adaptor weighs in a bit over 6 lbs. The design came from Chris Canterbury of BOXERMETAL he was more than patient and full of suggestions.
It is very similar to the one col has. Only it is one piece. I will most likely have to take the exhaust off to remove the rear wheel. it can be done without this but will be time consuming.

As I get the last few parts together I will keep them posted... I am also keen for this to be on road in time for Steam Fest It would be rather cool to turn up on a side car that is black and grey looking like its been through a holocaust dressed in our leather aviator jackets and goggles and open face helmets...and with a loud zorst and flame unit for kiks!! Very Happy
For some reason I have been lacking my usual enthusiasm lately. Mabey I just need a long ride with a few beers and a lot of laughs!!!! Only weeks away!!!

I am just finishing to put the rig together and decided to replace the 1/4 rubber damper between the sidecar frame and the chair. (I installed a over-sized tire and the chair had to be lifted up by a 1/4")
I am not cheap, but prefer affordable solution.
You need something hard enough to absorb vibrations but not too soft as you want the chair to be sturdy.
My Canadian solution.... hockey pucks.
They are 1/2" thick hard vulcanized rubber and are made to resist in the cold.
Maybe next week I will be able to report on this solution.

Now a question for our aussie friends.. Does anyone happen to know where there would be a 68-79 vw beetle? I am after the rims. 15 inch x 4 1/2. Just perfect for the rear wheel. This is what Saxon has on his outfit.

Hey Alby, did you end up getting a VW rim. I have one in my shed complete with good tyre if you are interested (Inverell, northern NSW). I ended up using a 15" rim made by HRD for the K100. Phil

Just wondering if anyone has some enthusiasm to share...running a bit low.
Got some welding done at the local engineering shed and this has set me back a ways. parts are stuffed....They have lost all their tradies to the gas fields..

So they said they will fix...Not sure of that..Me thinks I should have waited for Bert!!!

Here is the Left and right Tie rod ends.(i cut em off)  I sent in three with left and right hand threads on each end. Got back one with left and right hand threads and two with right hand threads..both ends..Seems the old farmer labourer that welded them cleand the threads out with a tap..No problems there...So you used a left handed tap I asks???  No dont have one..just run a normal tap through em to clean  em out..bit tight going through...!!!!!  (owner gently palms his own forehead)  Then says sorry and tells me to draw up waht I need and he will make for me...

Now lets talk about the welding!!!  No we wont..Have a look...

Subframe Construction K100 Side Car - Page 3 Engine11

So today i set about doing a bit more... Drew up new plans for linking to side car frame. Cut steel out to size. And made up a new set of Tie rods..16mm threads should be good enough..
Subframe Construction K100 Side Car - Page 3 New_ti10
Took new measurements from subframe fitted to model bike and woked out length and placement of tie rods and main rail.

Going to use this  design. Well based on it.. so much simpler..to attach the chair to sub frame and there is room for pillion legs.

I have also got the New shock fitted for chair and just need the park brake lever to arrive.
Subframe Construction K100 Side Car - Page 3 Shock_10
It sits much better now.

I am hoping to make some serious headway before summer gets here... I can really use some encouragement..feel free to mail me a kick in the pants..just label it Motivation!!!!!

Lot of work there Alby. I reckon you should give up now. You know it is beyond your capabilities and nothing will ever come of it apart from a herb garden for the local weeds.
As for those welds, I am glad that guys isnt slaughtering my steak. Mince anyone?

ps. do you think the negative response will fire him up enough? I am not sure.

Go Alby Go. You're the man. If he can't do it no one can.
