I don't know Charlie seems logical to me after all you've been into a few KRR river crossings most up to the cam cover, or a tad higher and well that's plenty of water from where I'm sitting

I was thinking more of the floods here when me and RosKKo got stranded in Boonah and Charlie a bit further north in Kilcoy. Oh what fun we had.

yeah that was kinda fun rick .....lol ... about 600k in drenching rain for this old bloke ...not all on gerty though  I seem to recall a grey k100 was involved ,, from Warwick back to Kingaroy

ill have to use gerty to collect some bits for the cruze rebuild (head gasket blew at about 7000 k ) and would prefer to not have to ride in the rain and come back and work in an engine bay
thankfully its a good 10 deg c cooler today ...phew yesterday took it out of me ,,but suitably replenished by morning

along with the clutch repair a couple of weeks ago

got the cruze sorted and back on the road ...was fortunate and found the root cause for all the drama ...of an engine change before I got it ....and the leaking water from the cooling system ...overnight and without pressure in the system for which I have changed the head gasket too many times "just in case ".



i think this might explain more than I could say .
except to say that part of the cooling system is now bypassed ....and after about another 1000 k s ...no fluid level decrease at all

It works better if it is attached to a bike, although it will last longer the way you have it now. No need to get it wet. Thankfully we have had a good drop here..but no flooding.

Have you any possible explanation as to why the journal seems to have two distinct wear marks. It looks like the current seal position has the seal lip bearing on the inner wear mark. I can't imagine that type of seal being installed in a way that would creat the outer wear mark?

pretty easy to do mate

ive done this job  before ...a few years ago now .... taking the whole bevel box off the first time ....but this rear end just leaks like a sieve ...since I put it on ...  but makes sense to do it right,  I guess .

cleanliness is paramount while its apart.

small taps on the output housing lets the output shaft main bearing  fall into the housing  without getting wedged in odd angles and then becoming difficult to get it to sit in the right place ,,,(don't forget the shims for the preload of the big bearing to housing)

the bolts on this bevel are a give away that its been done before ...as they are usually an shallow allen head type bolt that holds the halves together ...I found aftermarket 13mm head bolts on this one (sounds jap type replacements to me ..I guess just what was available at the time )

overall a 2 out of 5 for difficulty to the "been there before" guys  I guess .

yes mate there are 2 wear locations   in my case the outer lip of the seal had corrosion in the shaft  ..possibly from sitting for a long time without work .
the inner seal area was also showing some pitting ....hope fully my replacement (slightly different size  being 85 x 110 x 12 mm (the spec part is 85x 110 x 10 )  should sit inner of the old wear mark ...and slightly outer of the wear mark also  as I took about 1 mm off the rubber seal on the inside  to decrease the overall width  (to about 11 mm ) ....the shaft size lip of about a 1mm or so towards the last 3mm of the output shaft is inbuilt / factory ...and what I have seen before ...
heres a pic of what I pulled out



 the inner seal might be a little deeper than what the micrometer says  maybe 7.xx - 8mm ?  best I could do at short notice  sorry

Interesting post - I'm appreciative of the ingenuity in obtaining unworn location for new seal lip. Makes me wonder if anyone on here has used an outfit who market a thing called a 'speedi sleeve' which can be applied to a worn journal to obtain as new surface....

started refurbishment on the rear shockie ....after noticing some shock oil around the rear drive pivot pin during the last few rides

the FOX twin clicker has just had a service with shaft polished up and new seal installed on the shaft ...an olins type double seal  was used this time with a double lip instead of the round type fox replacement with the kit .

shes had a fair bit of abuse, as can be seen ....probably should have done a better job when I got it rebuilt before ....but  here goes

sorry guys, I hate to disappoint ,   ill  have to get a finer paint pen ...these poor old shakey hands just cant do that detail infill with a paint pen tip of about 4 mm

larry romestant got inspired  and shared his tyre paint efforts with me at about the same time  ...perhaps a challenge ...  this is just before going for the photo shoot  for the sale of his current fleet of ks .... Theres more works in the build plans for him ...currently looking for basic 2 radiator sub fairings stuff

seems he got nearly the right colours too ..but have to look for something like more silvery green - blue for old Gerty ? ....all I can find is bloomin white ...but will have to look a bit harder eh ???? 
 you lot have got me inspired again I think ...



meanwhile the ride in the rear end is fabulous  over "them thar hills" and took a good ride over "Glorious" again to test it all out ...sweet !!

Looks great on the big PC screen Charlie. Nice job!  I think the LED's are a super safety feature. One of my pet hates is brake lights buried under Top boxes.

Charlie, I was in Aldi yesterday and you can buy 500 WHITE zip ties for a cheap price. Could be an idea for a Christmas present for Blakey.

here it is nigel
4 core security cable (14 x0.020mm)  about 4.25mm in thickness and quite flexible











saddles in the box to hold the cable

glue lined heat shrink for the protection of the terminations ...
to fit 1 x cable tie to the rack for support of the feed lead externally ...and perhaps a couple in the cowl to hold it in the right place

But the BIG question is.... what colour is the cable tie? Blakey will be checking.

continuing with refurbishment of a gearbox

all the good bits from gertys gearbox ...(worn out input spline)  will go across into this one
just playing with the clutch release arm and pivot shaft  and selector claw arm , showing age corrosion and a bit sticky for my liking


a new clutch release arm pivot rod will need to be bought (from old blighty ) with deep grooves from the bearing mating area   and new bearings installed ...the're stuffed




gear selector claw arm and rollers also showing age   with the rollers frozen in position



a pull out and polish up has a really nice action with very little resistance at all now

gertys original gearbox looks pristine internally
except for the input shaft splines being cactus , there is a slight issue with the cam follower on the gear selector drum , the locating pin is worn somewhat .....the relief on the cam looks fine but the pin is worn in the shaft ...

so the plan is to exchange cases  with the better condition input shaft , new bearings on all , and new seals  throughout  as gertys gears are good in all respects in the past , with hardly ever  a "jump out of gear" event experienced before, more like lazy shift ...doh .   so the selector forks must be ok I guess .

You are too perfect in your work. All that cleaning and polishing now has to be done again with the new case. In my situation, grime is good..can't see any of the problems.
