Why was the single bolt fixing such a bad idea?

I am with you Paul...one bolt, easy to get to and something you do secure when putting back. The two tanks, pre 85/ post 85 are different capacities. I will try to line the two tanks up for a photo. I cannot see any difference in styling.

Not too much has happened in recent times. I am still waiting for the weather to warm up so that I can start painting. The photo is of a naked K and an undressed K. Leaving them together has caused some embarrassing moments. Below is the result of them being together...at night....both without clothes!

Sorry, I hit the send button too early. I also meant to ask about the tank capacities. I wasn't aware there was a difference. What IS the difference? Mine is an 85 model and I thought it had 22 litres?

The "newer" tank had a capacity of 21 litres. The strange thing was that the K75 Rt had a different capacity to that of the other K75s...only 1 litre, the RT had 22 and the others 21. Why? don't know.

Of course it is a young thing at the moment, so it does not need that much fuel.

Amazing, are our eyes getting worse or does everything have to be bigger and better? On the left is the old trip computer and right the new. By the way that 4 metres registered on the new one is moving the bike around in the garage.....very good fuel economy.....no fuel needed at all.

Charlie, as I look out over this computer I can see Charles (no kidding!) a 1.2 tonne Murray Grey bull eating. He is also producing a lot of manure. If only we could use the manure to power our transport.....bullshit......actually working. Maybe we should work on the idea further, although Canberra would the biggest supply source in Australia.

This is Charlie, oops, Charles. In New Zealand the government is/is going to tax farmers on how much methane comes out of animals' mouths. Apparently that end causes most of the damage. I once tried to walk between Charles and his girlfriends.......never again.

A bit of trivia to you people out there. Since I can get a right crash bar for $150 plus postage, I have decided to do it "my way". I have manufactured a crude crash bar as insurance until I can secure one at a reasonable price. No problems I thought.....use the modified K75 bars I have on the naked K100 as a guide and and used same bike to test the new bar. Did the right thing, checked the bolts needed to put the bar on, into town and 1 hour later I find out that the attachment bolt sizes have changed between 1983 and 1987.
That curly looking fixture now takes a much smaller bolt, thankfully the same size as the lower attachment bolts. Yes, another trip will be needed tomorrow. I wonder what other details have changed. Weather improving....maybe paint time next weekend. My "spray booth" is a large industrial size shed of a mate's. My shed , 4 bay, has a very natural floor in it.
I can only get use of the "spray booth" on a non working day...something about a fork lift that may get in the way.

I wouldn't be wanting to do it in the open there with the warmer weather comming on. You could put the clear on to protect the new flyflake flinish it would be an original.

Well finally the weather is warm and I set up the high tech spray booth that is filtered and set at a certain temperature.

As you can see I have the latest in equipment.

Now the gooooood part....gets a little high at times
The journey begins - Page 3 P9010112
Four coats of undercoat/ filler and leave in the shed or the sun for one week.
The next session should be next Saturday..rub back, 3 coats of base coat, 3 coats of top coat about about 4/5 coats of clear....leave for a week and then I get to scratch it putting the bike back together. Very sophisticated process as you can see. The current colour is grey....kind of dull...hides many imperfections.

Untill you start putting the top coat on then they stand out like a dick on a donkey.
Is it a single stage paint or do you use a silver base.

The end result will be a pearl...orange base coat and a different shade of orange for the next coat....hopefully laying the "flakes" the right way. Hate to admit it but the colour originally was a 1996 Vespa one.....will I be excommunicated?

A stupid question from me Stanley,
how hard was it to remove all the old paint ? and what did you use to do that.
I think orange would suit you, try and get a matching jacket and boots. There is a shop in Oxford street that sells that stuff.

RT, to remove the old paint I used 120 grit, then 180 grit on a vibrating (calm down) sander. That rough finish is good for the undercoat to grip. The biggest hassle was on the back of the top fairing with all those reinforcing sections....a dremel tool with a small grinder....doesn't really matter what it looks like as long as the paint grips.
Blakey, I took on board your thoughts when we spoke in Boonah. The engine etc is a satin heat black...no badges..paint the BMW lettering the same black. No badges on the tank or tail. Two colours apart from the alloy wheels, gearbox and final drive. The frame is now new gloss black.
Also made poly carbon flat sheets (painted black on the backside to cover the triangle around the battery.
I know it isn't red, but the helmet is still red.

Blakey, best to describe the colour as being very similar to the current Kawasaki Ninja 1000. I saw the colour and asked the dealer what was the official colour and code...answer...orange mate...no code. A deep orange going towards a copper.
Official name.... Piaggio Arancio Gioto Metallic Pia 949

Orange eh? I am seriously considering that as an option for my bike. At the moment it is black.
And white.
And silver
And that greeny silver colour
And the colour of filler.
And sanded aluminium (tank)
Probably still be that way if I make it to Bingara.
Orange eh? Me likey

Yep, I'm going the orange colour as well. Not a strong orange, just a couple of shades lighter (similar to your colour swatch on the right).

Did we talk about the "no badges" in Boonah, because that's exactly what I'm thinking of doing!!!

Just to stirr things up a bit..................................

Remember some years back I did see some pictures at a US page.
It was a from a bigger meeting, and the grand prize was a K100RS painted as a R90S.
Daytona orange and silver smoke, it was looking good.

Inge, is the point of your post that there was ever a bigger meeting than the planned Bingara K fest? or that my bike would look good in orange?

As for the silver smoke... Gentlemen, side stands at the ready

Blakey, we were discussing badges at Boonah and you were considering grinding off the Bmw letters on the spark plug cover. Sorry I pinched your idea, but I am not grinding off any of the lettering, just painting over.
Just to mix threads over, Charlie you mentioned having a better crash bar to save your fairing, I have welded a rough bar for the right side which extends further out, but not sure how far until I put things back together.

Charlie, this is the bigger crash bar, covered in poly agricultural irrigation pipe.....to fit in with the colour scheme. I will have another proper go with a pipe bender after I put the fairing back on.

The back brace part of the bar is missing.

That's fine work, Stan. It's only one more step to a sub frame from there.

Ok. Found the orange paint job I like.
And I will know if anyone steals my idea.
I bet the other side looks just as good.
