Charlie, I found out about strong bullbars on utes on Friday night. Collected a roo at about 80kms an hour one km from home....one headlight, one driving light and that is all. The bloody roo shook itself and hopped off into a paddock.

Hey Stan...I'm taking my standard BM crash bars off my RS and you can have them if you wish.
You can have first right of refusal, so maybe Charlie can have them if you don't need them.

This has the pearl and some clear.

This is one of the mirrors baking in the sun. Col just left after a visit and likes the colour. Unfortunately on Saturday night two moths decided to do some dive bombing...one onto the tank and another onto the big fairing. Rub back to base, start again and then run out of clear. We should finish the job this afternoon. My friend James believes that I had not learned enough yet and he did the top and clear coats....for which I am grateful.
One week in the sun baking and then reassembly starts....I wonder where all the bits and pieces are....around here somewhere...I hope.

Thanks for all the comments so far people. I do have a question of those wiser than me. What is the best glue to use to stick the pads under the grab handles and also the rubber pad on the tank that protects it from the seat ?

The grab handles hold them in and super glue, just a few spots

Thanks Rick....what about that rubber thing on the back of the tank...to protect it from the seat?

The plastic bits behind the grabhandles should be held in by the grab handles, they do on all the later Ks I have worked on except for one that had them trimmed (dont ask) and the rubber bit I clean with Acetone then use super glue on a few spots.
If the plastic bits wont stay I would use some silicone.

Well my baking oven isn't working today.....cloudy and cold.....so I started to a put a few things on that have well and truly baked.



Probably Tuesday or Wednesday for the rest to go on. I am not sure whether I am tempting fate but I have booked the bike in for a registration inspection Friday next week. Then short rides to sort out any issues not as yet discovered.

Love the color and finish looks great wowow. This is the two pack finish you were showing me on my thread yes ? and this is the finish straight off the gun, that is no sanding right ?

Halo, the process was as follows;
sand back old paint, sometimes back to plastic. Left mirror was white, blue, red and maroon...versatile!
Three coats of undercoat...two pack.
Rub back with 600/800.
Allow a week for the undercoat to dry, the usual wax and grease cleaner.
Three /four coats of base coat..two pack.
No rub/sanding
Three/four coats of pearl, two pack.
No rub etc
Four coats of clear, two pack.
Once everything is back on in the right spots there will be an inspection and possible go with Repo polish where there is a small run of clear or there is a rub spot to clean up.

Fantastic thanks for the detailed response it's another piece of the puzzle for me, I will use your recipe for my parts as well. Sorry just two more questions 1) How long between base & pearl? spraying 2)What setup did you use for the respirator etc if any ?.

Halo,The time between coats depends on the weather...heat, etc and also how "wet" the coat is. Your ratio of paint, hardener and thinners determines how "wet" the spray is. More thinners, the wetter the paint and the greater risk of runs, but the quicker the drying. This is where the advice of James was invaluable.
Usually 10 to 15 minutes between coats, including between the base and pearl. The first of the pearl or base was thicker than the other coats, getting thinner as you went.
Safety, OH&S issues were followed.....check for snakes, clear the roos from the paddock, move the fork out. Oh yeah, make sure that the owner of the shed doesn't turn up and wants to use the fork to get some fencing material out!
Sweep out the floor, then blow out the dust with compressor, then pour water on the concrete so that any dust left behind won't get drawn up from the floor by the action of the spray gun.
Breathe in and out to maintain oxygen levels, wear overalls or old work clothes. Really the way it is supposed to be involves a spray booth...$300,000, full air tight suits, oxygen tubes, face masks, gloves , extractor fans,recycling gear etc..
We used an industrial shed, tall and at times a little ventilated with a door open. Yes it is "smelly", but you walk out when you finish each coat for fresh air.
The owner got upset that we didn't allow the overspray to spray his orange forklift. He reckons it would have put the value up on it.
I sprayed and I am still normal....must get another glove for my third hand.

to the OH&S comments and thanks your advice it's good, the go from what I have read and your comments is go as thin as you can go without runs. I will see if I can purchase a space suit for a trip to the moon & back though.

Some additional advice Halo,

I found out the hard way...always use good quality, like Norton, paper as the cheap stuff does not have a membrane running through it, so it loses it's strength and becomes useless. The blue backed stuff is the one to get.

You will need measuring devices, either a cup for small amounts or better still a ruler. These have the marking in the form of ratios...paint, hardener, and thinners. You may notice that the cup has the markings on the inside. As long as the cup is level you can work it out easy.

Col, are to talking about next Friday or the Friday after? Next Friday, rego booked in for 9.30, will take about an hour. Off to get a green slip (compulsory third party insurance for those outside of our wonderful state) and then to what used to be the RTA with a cut lunch and there goes half the day! So I can't make it that day and the following Friday I will be going to the big smoke.

Thanks a mate has a spray suit & pressured head gear so I will lend, very expensive to buy I have noticed like $800 to $1500

Word of warning Halo don't try using more hardener than required (don't ask how I know ) you will find the paint setting at the nozzle of gun before it hits item being painted leaving you with a sand paper like finish.

A very temp fix could be to go to rare spares and grab a heater hose for a hx hz holden, they have a 90 deg bend at the inlet (well the origionals did) and about 11/2 inches of pipe and on the away side 15inches or there abouts as it comes back across to the tappet cover and would be as close as you could get to the right side ID might only last 12mths before it started to break down but at a pinch?????

Oh, don`t you get it Ainsjac......you put that 90^o Holden heater hose in front of the paint gun when you spraying those hard to reach areas.

I can't find a Holden hose, what about a P76?
Today a little more of the bike came together.

Put the tank on, connected fuel and electrical wiring, then put about 3 litres of fuel in.....and then tried to start it. It felt like minutes, but really seconds before it turned over and eventually with the choke off settled down to a nice idle. I plan to run through this fresh fuel and then change the fuel filter....get rid of anything that may have gotten into the lines while dismantled.

The front went on easily and all lights work. I will have matching crashbars, thanks to Blakey.

Can someone help me. I put the grommets for the side panels in a safe place, but I can't remember where that is. Two hours and the safe place has not been found.

At this stage with summer coming I will not be putting the lower panels on. Tomorrow that safe place is to be found. One illegal ride down the road late today, better not do too much like that and Friday the big inspection.

Miserable and, at times, wet day so progress slow.


Taking advice and suggestions of others....bracket to hold the radiator grille. Job tomorrow to strip back and repaint the engine.

The pockets are in as well as an extra power outlet up front. I also took on RT's idea of having a $4 lock on one of the pockets. Might bring up the other BMW lock to Bingara for Charlie to show me how to pull it apart and re key it.

Sean, I remember taking some things apart in the "spray booth" and, because it wasn't my place, I put the pieces in a "safe place" so that I could put them in a "safer place" at home. Some where along there the disappearance occurred. Never mind, I got new bolts etc. There was a bonus yesterday afternoon. I swept the garage and found the spring that sprang when I pulled the petrol cap apart. I suppose it is appropriate to find it....it is spring and I was doing some spring cleaning.

Col, I kind of rode the bike down the road to take a photo of a 12 wheeled road roller for the tag thread, but it had gone. So instead of going home, changing bikes to go to the zoo, I thought I would risk going another 3km to the zoo, no one stopped me......very sunny day and every one was blinded by the light and the colour and didn't check that there was no plate on the bike.
Today I will need morning tea, lunch and possibly arvo tea with me at the RTA. Government bodies assume that they have shifted their business to the internet and therefore don't need many counter staff......wrong.
